Abstract

Nonstandard Bose-Hubbard models can exhibit rich ground-state phase diagrams, even when considering the one-dimensional limit. Using a self-consistent Gutzwiller diagonalization approach, we study the mean-field ground-state properties of a long-range interacting atomic gas in a one-dimensional optical lattice. We first confirm that the inclusion of long-range two-body interactions to the standard Bose-Hubbard model introduces density-wave and supersolid phases. However, the introduction of pair and density-dependent tunneling can result in new phases with two-site periodic density, single-particle transport, and two-body transport order parameters. These staggered phases are potentially a mean-field signature of the known novel twisted superfluids found via a density-matrix renormalization group approach [Phys. Rev. A 94, 011603(R) (2016)]. We also observe other unconventional phases which are characterized by sign staggered order parameters between adjacent lattice sites.

Staggered superfluid phases of dipolar bosons in two-dimensional square lattices

Kuldeep Suthar, Rebecca Kraus, Hrushikesh Sable +3 more

We study the quantum ground state of ultracold bosons in a two-dimensional square lattice. The bosons interact via the repulsive dipolar interactions and $s$-wave scattering. The dynamics is described by the extended Bose-Hubbard model including correlated hopping due to the dipolar interactions, and the coefficients are found from the second quantized Hamiltonian using the Wannier expansion with realistic parameters. We determine the phase diagram using the Gutzwiller ansatz in the regime where the coefficients of the correlated hopping terms are negative and can interfere with the tunneling due to single-particle effects. We show that this interference gives rise to staggered superfluid and supersolid phases at vanishing kinetic energy, while we identify parameter regions at finite kinetic energy where the phases are incompressible. We compare the results with the phase diagram obtained with the cluster Gutzwiller approach and with the results found in one dimension using the density-matrix renormalization group.

Twisted complex superfluids in optical lattices

Ole Jürgensen, Klaus Sengstock, Dirk-Sören Lühmann

We show that correlated pair tunneling drives a phase transition to a twisted superfluid with a complex order parameter. This unconventional superfluid phase spontaneously breaks the time-reversal symmetry and is characterized by a twisting of the complex phase angle between adjacent lattice sites. We discuss the entire phase diagram of the extended Bose-Hubbard model for a honeycomb optical lattice showing a multitude of quantum phases including twisted superfluids, pair superfluids, supersolids and twisted supersolids. Furthermore, we show that the nearest-neighbor interactions lead to a spontaneous breaking of the inversion symmetry of the lattice and give rise to dimerized density-wave insulators, where particles are delocalized on dimers. For two components, we find twisted superfluid phases with strong correlations between the species already for surprisingly small pair-tunneling amplitudes. Interestingly, this ground state shows an infinite degeneracy ranging continuously from a supersolid to a twisted superfluid.

Staggered quantum phases of dipolar bosons at finite temperatures

Kuldeep Suthar, Kwai-Kong Ng

The extended Bose-Hubbard model with correlated tunneling exhibits staggered superfluid and supersolid quantum phases. We study finite-temperature phase transitions of quantum phases of dipolar bosons in a two-dimensional optical lattice using Gutzwiller mean-field and quantum Monte Carlo approaches. When nearest-neighbor repulsion is comparable to the on-site interaction, we find that the two topologically distinct superfluids are separated by a normal-fluid phase, while at stronger off-site interactions, density-modulated insulating quantum phases appear. We estimate the critical temperature of the staggered-superfluid to normal-fluid transition and show that this transition is of the Kosterlitz-Thouless type. Finally, we elucidate the coexistence of staggered quantum phases in the presence of an external trapping potential. Our study paves the way to observe novel staggered quantum phases in dipolar optical lattice experiments.

Disordered solid to Bose-glass transition in Bose-Hubbard model with disorder and long-range interactions

The introduction of disorder in Bose-Hubbard model gives rise to new glassy quantum phases, namely the Bose-glass (BG) and disordered solid (DS) phases. In this work, we present the rich phase diagram of interacting bosons in disordered two-dimensional optical lattice, modelled by the disordered Bose-Hubbard model. We systematically probe the effect of long-range interaction truncated to the nearest neighbors and next-nearest neighbors on the phase diagram. We investigate the zero-temperature ground-state quantum phases using the single-site Gutzwiller mean field (SGMF) theory. We also employ strong-coupling perturbative expansion to identify the nature of ground-state solid phases analytically. At sufficiently high disorder strength, we observe a quantum phase transition between the DS and BG phases. We have investigated this transition in greater detail using cluster Gutzwiller mean field theory to study the effect of inter-site correlations which is absent in the SGMF method. We have also studied this phase transition from the perspective of percolation theory.

Phase diagram of bosons in a two-dimensional optical lattice with infinite-range cavity-mediated interactions

Thibaut Flottat, Laurent de Forges de Parny, F. Hébert +2 more

A high-finesse optical cavity allows the establishment of long-range interactions between bosons in an optical lattice when most cold-atom experiments are restricted to short-range interactions. Supersolid phases have recently been experimentally observed in such systems. Using both exact quantum Monte Carlo simulations and the Gutzwiller approximation, we study the ground-state phase diagrams of a two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model with infinite-range interactions which describes such experiments. In addition to superfluid and insulating Mott phases, the infinite-range checkerboard interactions introduce charge-density waves and supersolid phases. We study here the system at various particle densities, elucidate the nature of the phases and quantum phase transitions, and discuss the stability of the phases with respect to phase separation. In particular we confirm the existence and stability of a supersolid phase detected experimentally.
