Abstract

We address the problem of free fermions interacting with frozen gauge fields. In particular, we consider a tight-binding model of fermions on the square lattice in which (i) flux 0 or $π$ is threaded through each plaquette and (ii) each nearest-neighbor link is decorated with an Ising degree of freedom that describes the local modulation of the hopping amplitude. Following the standard Ruderman--Kittel--Kasuya--Yosida (RKKY) approach, we compute an effective spin model in the coupling strength order by order. Unlike the original RRKY result for site-centered SU(2) spins in which the leading contribution is an effective exchange term at the second-order, perturbation theory in link-centered Z$_2$ case produces a first-order term that favors a collective ferromagnetic moment. If, by some means, an antiferromagnetic configuration can be stabilized, the energetics of ground state is controlled by an effective Ising interaction acting pairwise at the long range across the system.

Ferromagnetism of cold fermions loaded into a decorated square lattice

Kazuto Noda, Akihisa Koga, Norio Kawakami +1 more

We investigate two-component ultracold fermions loaded into a decorated square lattice, which are described by the Hubbard model with repulsive interactions and nearest-neighbor hoppings. By combining the real-space dynamical mean-field theory with the numerical renormalization-group method, we discuss how a ferromagnetically ordered ground state in the weak-coupling regime, which originates from the existence of a dispersionless band, is adiabatically connected to a Heisenberg ferrimagnetic state in the strong-coupling limit. The effects of level splitting and hopping imbalance are also addressed.

Exact solutions of frustrated ordinary and chiral eight-site Hubbard models

James K. Freericks, L. M. Falicov, Daniel S. Rokhsar

This contribution addresses the question of whether or not the ground state of a frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg model can be smoothly related to the ground state of a simple tight-binding model at half-filling in an appropriately chosen magnetic field. This continuity is considered explicitly for an eight-site square-lattice Hubbard model with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor hopping, which approaches a frustrated Heisenberg model with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange coupling in the limit of large Hubbard U. In addition, a counterexample to the widely held belief that the half-filled band of the ordinary Hubbard model is nonmagnetic has been found in the regime where the hopping parameters and Hubbard interaction are all the same order of magnitude.

Quantum phases of two-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theory coupled to spinless fermion matter

Umberto Borla, Bhilahari Jeevanesan, Frank Pollmann +1 more

We investigate the rich quantum phase diagram of Wegner's theory of discrete Ising gauge fields interacting with $U(1)$ symmetric single-component fermion matter hopping on a two-dimensional square lattice. In particular limits the model reduces to (i) pure $\mathbb{Z}_2$ even and odd gauge theories, (ii) free fermions in a static background of deconfined $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge fields, (iii) the kinetic Rokhsar-Kivelson quantum dimer model at a generic dimer filling. We develop a local transformation that maps the lattice gauge theory onto a model of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge-invariant spin $1/2$ degrees of freedom. Using the mapping, we perform numerical density matrix renormalization group calculations that corroborate our understanding of the limits identified above. Moreover, in the absence of the magnetic plaquette term, we reveal signatures of topologically ordered Dirac semimetal and staggered Mott insulator phases at half-filling. At strong coupling, the lattice gauge theory displays fracton phenomenology with isolated fermions being completely frozen and dimers exhibiting restricted mobility. In that limit, we predict that in the ground state dimers form compact clusters, whose hopping is suppressed exponentially in their size. We determine the band structure of the smallest clusters numerically using exact diagonalization.

Effective pairing interaction in the two-dimensional Hubbard model within a spin rotationally invariant approach

Vardan Apinyan, T. K. Kopeć

We implement the rotationally invariant formulation of the two-dimensional Hubbard model, with nearest-neighbors hopping $t$, which allows for the analytical study of the system in the low-energy limit. Both U(1) and SU(2) gauge transformations are used to factorize the charge and spin contributions to the original electron operator in terms of the corresponding gauge fields. The Hubbard Coulomb energy $U$ term is then expressed in terms of quantum phase variables conjugate to the local charge and variable spin-quantization axis, providing a useful representation of strongly correlated systems. It is shown that these gauge fields play a similar role as phonons in the BCS theory: they act as the ``glue'' for fermion pairing. By tracing out gauge degrees of freedom, the form of paired states is established and the strength of the pairing potential is determined. It is found that the attractive pairing potential in the effective low-energy fermionic action is nonzero in a rather narrow range of $U/t$.

Phase diagram of the half-filled extended Hubbard model in two dimensions

Biplab Chattopadhyay, D. M. Gaitonde

We consider an extended Hubbard model of interacting fermions on a lattice. The fermion kinetic energy corresponds to a tight-binding Hamiltonian with nearest-neighbor (-t) and next-nearest-neighbor (${\mathrm{t}}^{|\mathrm{I}\mathrm{H}}$) hopping matrix elements. In addition to the on-site Hubbard interaction (U) we also consider a nearest-neighbor repulsion (V). We obtain the zero-temperature phase diagram of our model within the Hartree-Fock approximation. We consider ground states having charge- and spin-density-wave ordering as well as states with orbital antiferromagnetism or spin nematic order. The latter two states correspond to particle-hole binding with ${\mathrm{d}}_{{\mathrm{x}}^{2}\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{y}}^{2}}$ symmetry in the charge and spin channels, respectively. For ${\mathrm{t}}^{|\mathrm{I}\mathrm{H}}$=0, only the charge-density-wave and spin-density-wave states are energetically stable. For nonzero ${\mathrm{t}}^{|\mathrm{I}\mathrm{H}}$, we find that orbital antiferromagnetism (or spin nematic) order is stable over a finite portion of the phase diagram at weak coupling. This region of stability is seen to grow with increasing values of ${\mathrm{t}}^{|\mathrm{I}\mathrm{H}}$.

Magnetic order through Kondo coupling to quantum spin liquids

Mehmet Akif Keskiner, Mehmet Özgür Oktel, Natalia Borisovna Perkins +1 more

We study the emergence of magnetic order in localized spins that interact solely through their coupling to a Kitaev-type spin liquid. Using three toy models – the Kitaev model, the Yao–Lee model, and a square-lattice generalization of the Kitaev model – we calculate the effective exchange Hamiltonians mediated by the fractionalized excitations of these spin liquids. This setup is analogous to a Kondo lattice model, where conduction electrons are replaced by itinerant Majorana fermions. In the Kitaev model, our results show that the lowest-order perturbation theory generates short-range interactions with modified couplings and extending to sixth order introduces longer-range interactions while preserving the quantum spin-liquid ground state . Models involving more Majorana flavors on honeycomb and square lattices exhibit more complex behavior. The honeycomb Yao–Lee model with three flavors of itinerant Majorana fermions generates long-range RKKY-type interactions, leading to antiferromagnetic order and partial gapping of the Majorana fermion spectrum. In contrast, the square-lattice model produces a combination of anisotropic short- and long-range interactions, which can give rise to either a dimerized quantum paramagnetic state or an Ising antiferromagnet, depending on the parameters. These results illustrate the rich variety of magnetic orders that can be mediated by Kitaev-type spin liquids.
