Kinematic mechanism of the modulation of the spectral intensity in the spatially uniform system of Hubbard fermions

Valerii Vladimirovich Val'kov, A. A. Golovnya, M. M. Korovushkin

Using the exact representation of the Green’s function constructed in terms of the Hubbard operators, it has been shown that the kinematic interaction that induces the spin-fluctuation processes in the spatially uniform system of Hubbard fermions leads to significant variations in the spectral intensity A ( k , ω) in the Brillouin zone. As a result, the modulation of A ( k , ω) appears in the Fermi contour. The sign of the hopping integral within the first coordination sphere is determined by the contour section, where A ( k , ω) decreases according to the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy data.

Signature of Preformed Pairs in Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

Klemen Kovač, Alberto Nocera, A. Damascelli +2 more

We use density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and variational exact diagonalization (VED) to calculate the single-electron removal spectral weight for the Hubbard-Holstein model at low electron densities. Tuning the strength of the electron-phonon coupling and of the Hubbard repulsion allows us to contrast the results for a liquid of polarons versus a liquid of bipolarons. The former shows spectral weight up to the Fermi energy, as expected for a metal. The latter has a gap in its spectral weight, set by the bipolaron binding energy, although this is also a (strongly correlated) metal. This difference suggests that angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy could be used to identify liquids of pre-formed pairs. Furthermore, we show that the one-dimensional liquid of incoherent bipolarons is well approximated by a "Bose sea" of bosons that are hard-core in momentum space, occupying the momenta inside the Fermi sea but otherwise noninteracting. This new proposal for a strongly correlated many-body wave function opens the way for studying various other properties of incoherent (nonsuperconducting) liquids of preformed pairs in any dimension.

General analysis of the angle-resolved photoemission line shape for strongly correlated electron systems

Sergei G. Ovchinnikov, Elena I. Shneyder, Alexander A. Kordyuk

In many cases the standard perturbation approach appears to be too simple to describe precisely the angle-resolved photoemission spectrum of a strongly correlated electron system. In particular, to describe the momentum asymmetry observed in the photoemission spectra of high-${T}_{c}$ cuprates, a phenomenological approach based on an extremely correlated Fermi-liquid model has been recently introduced. Here we analyze the general structure of the Green's function of quasiparticles in strongly correlated electron systems and stress that it is defined not only by the self-energy of Hubbard quasiparticles but also by a strength operator. The latter leads to an additional odd momentum contribution to the spectral function and alone can explain the observed asymmetry. So, the asymmetry of the angle-resolved photoemission spectra can be a measure of the strength of electron correlations in materials.
