Abstract

To extend the classical concept of Markovianity to an open quantum system, different notions of the divisibility of its dynamics have been introduced. Here, we analyze this issue by five complementary approaches: equations of motion, real-time diagrammatics, Kraus-operator sums, as well as time-local and nonlocal (Nakajima-Zwanzig) quantum master equations. As a case study featuring several types of divisible dynamics, we examine in detail an exactly solvable noninteracting fermionic resonant level coupled arbitrarily strongly to a fermionic bath at an arbitrary temperature in the wideband limit. In particular, the impact of divisibility on the time-dependence of the observable level occupation is investigated and compared with typical Markovian approximations. We find that the loss of semigroup-divisibility is accompanied by a prominent reentrant behavior: Counter to intuition, the level occupation may temporarily increase significantly in order to reach a stationary state with smaller occupation, implying a reversal of the measurable transport current. In contrast, the loss of the so-called completely positive divisibility is more subtly signaled by the prohibition of such current reversals in specific time-intervals. Experimentally, it can be detected in the family of transient currents obtained by varying the initial occupation. To quantify the nonzero footprint left by the system in its effective environment, we determine the exact time-dependent state of the latter as well as related information measures such as entropy, exchange entropy, and coherent information.

Characterization of P-divisibility in two-level open quantum systems

Guillaume Théret, Camille Lombard Latune, Dominique Sugny

We study different characterizations of positive (P) divisibility in two-level open quantum systems whose dynamics are governed by a time-local master equation with time-dependent relaxation rates. In the case of phase-covariant dynamics, necessary and sufficient conditions for the P-divisibility of the dynamical map are given in terms of inequalities on such relaxation rates. We propose a geometric P-divisibility criterion based on the Bloch coordinates. The connection to the Breuer-Laine-Piilo (BLP) measure of non-Markovianity is also established. We show how these results can be extended to a Redfield master equation. As an application of such characterizations, we study the open dynamics of a qubit interacting with a single bosonic mode. More precisely, we characterize the properties of the local map of the qubit generated by its interaction with the bosonic mode, playing the role of an extremely reduced bath. Interesting observations are made, opening perspectives for a deeper physical understanding of complete positive divisibility, P-divisibility, and BLP measure.

Extension of quantum dynamical semigroup generators for open systems to time-dependent Hamiltonians

K. Lendi

The concept of complete positivity fixes in considerable detail the mathematical structure of quantum Markovian master equations which describe the combined reversible-irreversible dynamics of open systems for the case of time-independent Hamilton operators. For many applications such as, for instance, problems of time-resolved spectroscopy, similar results would be of great value but involve time-varying external fields with a corresponding time-dependent Hamiltonian. For this reason, we propose a suitable extension of the Kossakowski generator to the time-dependent case by maintaining complete positivity and using arguments suggested by experimental facts. As an example, generalized Bloch-like equations can be obtained with three different relaxation times and a nonlinear dependence upon field strength.

Dynamical maps for reduced states of indistinguishable particles

Leonardo da Silva Souza

In the present thesis, we examine two subjects in the theory of open quantum systems. The first subject deals with the description of the dynamics of open systems initially correlated with the environment. In the theory of open quantum systems, maps characterizing the dynamics of a quantum system in contact with the environment are usually thought to be completely positive. However, this is not necessarily true if the system and its environment are initially correlated, unless we restrict the domain on which the map acts, in other words, only a subset of the set of states of the system gets mapped to other states by the dynamical map. We present a framework for the construction of reduced dynamical maps for subsystems of indistinguishable fermionic particles. We show that in this scenario, a reduced map in the Kraus representation is possible for some sets of states where the only non-classical correlation present is exchange. The second subject studied is related to the characterization of non-Markovian dynamics with the divisibility and entanglement criteria. We obtain the analytical expression for the Kraus decomposition of the quantum map of an environment modeled by an arbitrary quadratic fermionic Hamiltonian acting on one or two qubits, we derive simple functions to examine the non positivity of the intermediate map. In the particular case of an environment represented by the Ising Hamiltonian, we discuss the two sources of non-Markovianity in the model, one due to the finite size of the lattice, and another due to the kind of interactions.

Density-operator evolution: Complete positivity and the Keldysh real-time expansion

Viktor Reimer, M. R. Wegewijs

We study the reduced time-evolution of general open quantum systems by combining insights from quantum-information and statistical field theory. Inspired by prior work [Eur. Phys. Lett.~102, 60001 (2013) and Phys. Rev. Lett.~111, 050402 (2013)] we establish the explicit structure guaranteeing the complete positivity (CP) and trace-preservation (TP) of the real-time evolution expansion in terms of the microscopic system-environment coupling. This reveals a fundamental two-stage structure of the coupling expansion: Whereas the first stage naturally defines the dissipative timescales of the system -before having integrated out the environment completely- the second stage sums up elementary physical processes, each described by a CP superoperator. This allows us to establish the highly nontrivial functional relation between the (Nakajima-Zwanzig) memory-kernel superoperator for the reduced density operator and novel memory-kernel operators that generate the Kraus operators of an operator-sum. We illustrate the physically different roles of the two emerging coupling-expansion parameters for a simple solvable model. Importantly, this operational approach can be implemented in the existing Keldysh real-time technique and allows approximations for general time-nonlocal quantum master equations to be systematically compared and developed while keeping the CP and TP structure explicit. Our considerations build on the result that a Kraus operator for a physical measurement process on the environment can be obtained by `cutting' a group of Keldysh real-time diagrams `in half'. This naturally leads to Kraus operators lifted to the system plus environment which have a diagrammatic expansion in terms of time-nonlocal memory-kernel operators. These lifted Kraus operators obey coupled time-evolution equations which constitute an unraveling of the original Schroedinger equation for system plus environment. Whereas both equations lead to the same reduced dynamics, only the former explicitly encodes the operator-sum structure of the coupling expansion.

Complete positivity, positivity, and long-time asymptotic behavior in a two-level open quantum system

Guillaume Théret, Dominique Sugny

We study the concepts of complete positivity and positivity in a two-level open quantum system whose dynamics are governed by a time-local quantum master equation. We establish necessary and sufficient conditions on the time-dependent relaxation rates to ensure complete positivity and positivity of the dynamical map. We discuss their relations with the non-Markovian behavior of the open system. We also analyze the long-time asymptotic behavior of the dynamics as a function of the rates. We show under which conditions on the rates the system tends to an equilibrium state. Different examples illustrate this general study.

Local approach to entropy production in the nonequilibrium dynamics of open quantum systems

Irene Ada Picatoste, Alessandra Colla, Heinz-Peter Breuer

We discuss fundamental features of the local expression for the entropy production rate of the nonequilibrium quantum dynamics of open systems and its relations to memory effects and the spectrum of the generator of the dynamics. Defining the entropy production rate as negative rate of change of the relative entropy with respect to an instantaneous fixed point, it is shown that positivity of the entropy production rate for all possible initial states implies that the real parts of the eigenvalues of the time-local generator for the quantum master equation are always negative. It is further demonstrated that Markovian dynamics, identified as P-divisibility of the quantum dynamical map, implies positivity of entropy production rate, thus providing a kind of generalized second law in the nonequilibrium regime. We also prove by means of the counterexample of a phase covariant quantum master equation that the converse of this statement is not true, i.e., there are non-Markovian dynamics for which the entropy production rate is always positive. Thus, we conclude that the emergence of negative entropy production rates is a sufficient but not necessary condition for non-Markovianity of the quantum dynamics. Finally, we also consider a recently introduced map-based notion of entropy production and show the equivalence between its positivity and Markovianity for general finite-dimensional systems.
