Abstract

Entanglement distribution between distant parties is one of the most important and challenging tasks in quantum communication. Distribution of photonic entangled states using optical fiber links is a fundamental building block toward quantum networks. Among the different degrees of freedom, orbital angular momentum (OAM) is one of the most promising due to its natural capability to encode high dimensional quantum states. We experimentally demonstrate fiber distribution of hybrid polarization-vector vortex entangled photon pairs. To this end, we exploit a recently developed air-core fiber that supports OAM modes. High fidelity distribution of the entangled states is demonstrated by performing quantum state tomography in the polarization-OAM Hilbert space after fiber propagation and by violations of Bell inequalities and multipartite entanglement tests. The results open new scenarios for quantum applications where correlated complex states can be transmitted by exploiting the vectorial nature of light.

We present a scheme to distribute photon pairs entangled in vector vortex states in a recently developed 1.2-km long air-core fiber, which supports orbital angular momentum modes. This scheme opens new pathways to transmit quantum correlated photons.

Quantum Communication with Orbital Angular Momentum

Davide Bacco, Daniele Cozzolino, Beatrice Da Lio +3 more

Quantum communication consists of the reliable transmission of quantum states among several parties and looks toward the long-term goal of a Quantum Internet. Quantum Internet could open up a whole universe of new applications, spanning from fundamental physics and secure communications to remote quantum computing. Multiple degrees of freedom can be used for the distribution of the quantum states, such as polarization, frequency, time and space. In particular, Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) of light is one of the most promising thanks to its unbounded nature, albeit challenging to manipulate. OAM has been largely investigated both for classical and quantum communications, allowing for enhanced data rate in classical links and determining a high-dimensional basis for quantum communication. Here, we report our recent results related to quantum states encoded in the orbital angular momentum of light, proving the capability of preparing, manipulating, transmitting and measuring high-dimensional quantum states through a multimode fibre.

Generation of hybrid polarization-orbital angular momentum entangled states

Eleonora Nagali, Fabio Sciarrino

Hybrid entangled states exhibit entanglement between different degrees of freedom of a particle pair and thus could be useful for asymmetric optical quantum network where the communication channels are characterized by different properties. We report the first experimental realization of hybrid polarization-orbital angular momentum (OAM) entangled states by adopting a spontaneous parametric down conversion source of polarization entangled states and a polarization-OAM transferrer. The generated quantum states have been characterized through quantum state tomography. Finally, the violation of Bell's inequalities with the hybrid two photon system has been observed.

Quantum steering with vector vortex photon states with the detection loophole closed

Sergei Slussarenko, Dominick J. Joch, Nora Tischler +5 more

Abstract Violating a nonlocality inequality enables the most powerful remote quantum information tasks and fundamental tests of quantum physics. Loophole-free photonic verification of nonlocality has been achieved with polarization-entangled photon pairs, but not with states entangled in other degrees of freedom. Here we demonstrate completion of the quantum steering nonlocality task, with the detection loophole closed, when entanglement is distributed by transmitting a photon in an optical vector vortex state, formed by optical orbital angular momentum (OAM) and polarization. As well as opening up a high-efficiency encoding beyond polarization, the critically important demonstration of vector vortex steering opens the door to new free-space and satellite-based secure quantum communication devices and device-independent protocols.

Orbital Angular Momentum States Enabling Fiber-based High-dimensional Quantum Communication

Daniele Cozzolino, Davide Bacco, Beatrice Da Lio +8 more

Going beyond two-state qubits, $q\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}u\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}d\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}i\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}t\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}s$ based on quantum states of high dimension constitute a rich resource in quantum information, and their exploitation will play a prominent role in next-generation technologies. Generation and manipulation of qudits have improved strongly over the last decades; their reliable transmission between remote locations remains the central challenge. The authors use an air-core fiber supporting orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes to faithfully transmit qudits. Four OAM quantum states and their superpositions are created, propagated over a 1.2-km fiber, and detected. Moreover, three quantum-key-distribution protocols are implemented.
