Abstract

We point out that the Kitaev materials may not necessarily support Kitaev spin liquid. It is well known that having a Kitaev term in the spin interaction is not the sufficient condition for the Kitaev spin-liquid ground state. Many other spin liquids may be stabilized by the competing spin interactions of the systems. We thus explore the possibilities of non-Kitaev spin liquids in the honeycomb Kitaev materials. We carry out a systematic classification of gapped ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ spin liquids using the Schwinger boson representation for the spin variables. The presence of strong spin-orbit coupling in the Kitaev materials brings new ingredients into the projective symmetry group classification of the non-Kitaev spin liquid. We predict the spectroscopic properties of these gapped non-Kitaev spin liquids. Moreover, among the gapped spin liquids that we discover, we identify the spin liquid whose spinon condensation leads to the zigzag magnetic order that was observed in ${\mathrm{Na}}_{2}{\mathrm{IrO}}_{3}$ and $\ensuremath{\alpha}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{RuCl}}_{3}$. We further discuss the possibility of gapped ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ spin liquid and the deconfined quantum criticality from the zigzag magnetic order to spin dimerization in pressurized $\ensuremath{\alpha}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{RuCl}}_{3}$.

Classification and properties of quantum spin liquids on the hyperhoneycomb lattice

Biao Huang, Wonjune Choi, Yong Baek Kim +1 more

The family of ``Kitaev materials'' provides an ideal platform to study quantum spin liquids and their neighboring magnetic orders. Motivated by the possibility of a quantum spin liquid ground state in pressurized hyperhoneycomb iridate $\ensuremath{\beta}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{Li}}_{2}{\mathrm{IrO}}_{3}$, we systematically classify and study symmetric quantum spin liquids on the hyperhoneycomb lattice, using the Abrikosov-fermion representation. Among the 176 symmetric $U(1)$ spin liquids (and 160 ${Z}_{2}$ spin liquids), we identify eight ``root'' $U(1)$ spin liquids in proximity to the ground state of the solvable Kitave model on the hyperhonecyomb lattice. These eight states are promising candidates for possible $U(1)$ spin liquid ground states in pressurized $\ensuremath{\beta}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{Li}}_{2}{\mathrm{IrO}}_{3}$. We further discuss physical properties of these eight $U(1)$ spin liquid candidates, and show that they all support nodal-line-shaped spinon Fermi surfaces.

Quantum spin liquid ground states of the Heisenberg-Kitaev model on the triangular lattice

Pavel Kos, Matthias Punk

We study quantum disordered ground states of the two-dimensional Heisenberg-Kitaev model on the triangular lattice using a Schwinger boson approach. Our aim is to identify and characterize potential gapped quantum spin liquid phases that are stabilized by anisotropic Kitaev interactions. For antiferromagnetic Heisenberg and Kitaev couplings and sufficiently small spin $S$, we find three different symmetric ${Z}_{2}$ spin liquid phases, separated by two continuous quantum phase transitions. Interestingly, the gap of elementary excitations remains finite throughout the transitions. The first spin liquid phase corresponds to the well-known zero-flux state in the Heisenberg limit, which is stable with respect to small Kitaev couplings and develops ${120}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ order in the semiclassical limit at large $S$. In the opposite Kitaev limit, we find a different spin liquid ground state, which is a quantum disordered version of a magnetically ordered state with antiferromagnetic chains, in accordance with results in the classical limit. Finally, at intermediate couplings, we find a spin liquid state with unusual spin correlations. Upon spinon condensation, this state develops Bragg peaks at incommensurate momenta in close analogy to the magnetically ordered Z2 vortex crystal phase, which has been analyzed in recent theoretical works.

Kitaev exchange and field-induced quantum spin-liquid states in honeycomb α-RuCl3

Ravi Yadav, Nikolay A. Bogdanov, Vamshi M. Katukuri +3 more

Abstract Large anisotropic exchange in 5 d and 4 d oxides and halides open the door to new types of magnetic ground states and excitations, inconceivable a decade ago. A prominent case is the Kitaev spin liquid, host of remarkable properties such as protection of quantum information and the emergence of Majorana fermions. Here we discuss the promise for spin-liquid behavior in the 4 d 5 honeycomb halide α -RuCl 3 . From advanced electronic-structure calculations, we find that the Kitaev interaction is ferromagnetic, as in 5 d 5 iridium honeycomb oxides, and indeed defines the largest superexchange energy scale. A ferromagnetic Kitaev coupling is also supported by a detailed analysis of the field-dependent magnetization. Using exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group techniques for extended Kitaev-Heisenberg spin Hamiltonians, we find indications for a transition from zigzag order to a gapped spin liquid when applying magnetic field. Our results offer a unified picture on recent magnetic and spectroscopic measurements on this material and open new perspectives on the prospect of realizing quantum spin liquids in d 5 halides and oxides in general.

Raman Spectroscopic Investigation of Kitaev Quantum Spin Liquids

Vivek Kumar, Pradeep Kumar

Quantum spin liquids, a highly topologically entangled, dynamically correlated state where quantum fluctuations preclude any long-range ordering down to absolute zero. In the search for a topologically robust qubit, the scientific community has been in continuous hunt for real quantum spin liquid systems. Alexei Kitaev in his exactly solvable model for a spin-1/2 two-dimensional honeycomb lattice, presented a system that hosts a topologically protected state (Majorana zero-modes). Under an applied external field, the Kitaev spin liquids turn into a topologically non-trivial chiral spin-liquid state with non-abelian anionic excitations, which is crucial for quantum computing. Earlier theoretical predictions advocated that Kitaev physics can be realized in spin-orbit-coupled Mott insulators such as honeycomb irradiates and ruthenates. However, the experimental findings continuously challenge the theoretical aspects, indicating the presence of non-Kitaev interactions in real materials, where the dimensionality, disorder (vacancy), chemical composition, generalized spin-S, and external perturbations (pressure, magnetic field, temperature) can actively tune the Kitaev interactions and the ground state excitations. In this review article, a comprehensive discussion is included with an updated literature survey in the context of the potential of Raman spectroscopy as a probe for Kitaev quantum spin liquids.

Classification of spin liquids on the square lattice with strong spin-orbit coupling

Johannes Reuther, Shu-Ping Lee, Jason Alicea

Spin liquids represent exotic types of quantum matter that evade conventional symmetry-breaking order even at zero temperature. Exhaustive classifications of spin liquids have been carried out in several systems, particularly in the presence of full SU(2) spin-rotation symmetry. Real magnetic compounds, however, generically break SU(2) spin symmetry as a result of spin-orbit coupling---which in many materials provides an ``order one'' effect. We generalize previous works by using the projective symmetry group method to classify ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ spin liquids on the square lattice when SU(2) spin symmetry is maximally lifted. We find that, counterintuitively, the lifting of spin symmetry actually results in vastly more spin-liquid phases compared to SU(2)-invariant systems. A generic feature of the SU(2)-broken case is that the spinons naturally undergo $p+ip$ pairing; consequently, many of these ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ spin liquids feature a topologically nontrivial spinon band structure supporting gapless Majorana edge states. We study in detail several spin-liquid phases with varying numbers of gapless edge states and discuss their topological protection. The edge states are often protected by a combination of time reversal and lattice symmetries and hence resemble recently proposed topological crystalline superconductors.

Symmetry-protected gapless Z2 spin liquids

Yuan-Ming Lu

Despite rapid progress in understanding gapped topological states, much less is known about gapless topological phases of matter, especially in strongly correlated electrons. In this work, we discuss a large class of robust gapless quantum spin liquids in frustrated magnets made of half-integer spins, which are described by gapless fermionic spinons coupled to dynamical ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge fields. Requiring $\text{U}(1)$ spin conservation, time-reversal, and certain space-group symmetries, we show that certain spinon symmetry fractionalization class necessarily leads to a gapless spectrum. These gapless excitations are stable against any perturbations, as long as the required symmetries are preserved. Applying these gapless criteria to spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ systems on square, triangular, and kagome lattices, we show that all gapped symmetric ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ spin liquids in Abrikosov-fermion representation can also be realized in Schwinger-boson representation. This leads to 64 gapped ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ spin liquids on square lattice, and 8 gapped states on both kagome and triangular lattices.
