Abstract

We propose a realization of the quantum switch for coherent light fields for the fiber-coupled microdisk cavities. We demonstrate by combining numerical and analytical methods that both in strong coupling and bad cavity limits it is possible to change a system's behavior from being fully transparent to being fully reflective by varying the amplitude of the external control field. We remark that tuning the amplitude of the control field instead of cavity-atom coupling strength, which was suggested by S. Parkins et al., [Phys. Rev. A 90, 053822 (2014)] for two-level atoms and works only in the strong coupling limit, brings more control and tunability over the transmitted and reflected intensities. We also demonstrate the possibility of controlling the statistics of the input coherent field with the control field which opens the venue for obtaining quantum states of light.

Microtoroidal cavity QED with fiber overcoupling and strong atom-field coupling: A single-atom quantum switch for coherent light fields

A. S. Parkins, Takao Aoki

We propose a scheme for single-atom, quantum control of the direction of propagation of a coherent field incident, via a tapered fiber, upon a microtoroidal whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) resonator. The scheme involves overcoupling of the fiber taper to the resonator and strong coupling of an atom to the evanescent field of the WGM, i.e., an atom-field coupling that exceeds the total WGM linewidth. In contrast to previous, related schemes that operate in the bad-cavity regime, the proposed scheme can operate effectively with much stronger incident fields, while also preserving their coherent nature. It can also serve to prepare an entangled state of the atom and coherent optical pulses propagating in opposite directions along the fiber. We evaluate the fidelity of preparation of such a state taking into account absorption and atomic spontaneous emission and demonstrate that high fidelities should be possible with realistic parameters.

Tunable interaction-free all-optical switching in a five-level atom-cavity system

Tiantian Liu Tiantian Liu, Gongwei Lin, Fengxue Zhou +3 more

A scheme is proposed for tunable all-optical switching based on the double-dark states in a five-level atom-cavity system. In the scheme, the output signal light of the reflection and the transmission channels can be switched on or off by manipulating the control field. When the control light is coupled to the atom-cavity system, the input signal light is reflected by the cavity. Thus, there is no direct coupling between the control light and the signal light. Furthermore, the position of the double-dark states can be changed by adjusting the coherent field, and, thus, the switching in our scheme is tunable. By presenting the numerical calculations of the switching efficiency, we show that this type of the interaction-free all-optical switching can be realized with high switching efficiency.

Tunable subluminal and superluminal light with optomechanical-induced transparency under steady-state configuration

Salman Khan, Muhammad Awais Chatha

Abstract We study a two-cavity optomechanical system in which one cavity ( A ) encloses a mechanical resonator and the other cavity ( C ) encloses a two-level atom are, respectively, driven by a strong pump and a weak probe fields. In addition to a direct pathway, the excitations in cavity C and the enclosed atom can also be caused through an indirect pathway. The interference between the two possible routs for excitations produces a controllable transparency window in the probe transmission spectrum of cavity C . The coupling strength between cavity C and the atom works as an additional parameter to the coupling strength between the two cavities which helps to manipulate the dynamical properties of the system and hence to control the width of the transparency window. Furthermore, we show that the single setup can be used to produce an optical switch from two different physical behaviors of the model, and to realize subluminal and superluminal behaviors in the output spectrum at probe frequency of cavity C .

Optical Switch Based on Dressed Intracavity Dark States

Miaodi Guo, Xuemei Su

Abstract We present a scheme to realize two‐direction optical switch by a single‐mode optical cavity containing some four‐level atoms. The high switching efficiency can be obtained through low photon loss and large third‐order nonlinear susceptibility of this N‐type atomic system in cavity. Without the microwave source, it can be reduced to a Λ‐type atomic system where a coupling laser is used to realize single intracavity electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Namely, the probe field can be transmitted almost totally at resonance. Thus a two‐direction optical switch is operated and the state for forward (backward) direction is set as “open” (“closed”). When microwave source is introduced, dressed splitting of intracavity dark state happens. The probe field is reflected almost completely at resonance and the state of the optical switch at forward and backward directions (transmitted and reflected channels) is shifted as “closed” and “open”, respectively. Moreover, this scheme is much advantageous to realize splitting of intracavity dark state because weak microwave field ( ) induces the coupling between intracavity dark state and one sublevel of ground state. While a strong pump laser ( ) which couples the intracavity dark state with an excited level is applied to realize this splitting in ref. [Phys. Rev. A 85 013814 (2012)].

Interaction-free all-optical switching at low light intensities in a multiatom cavity-QED system

Bichen Zou, Zheng Tan, Mohamed Musa +1 more

We propose a scheme of the interaction-free all-optical switching in a multiatom cavity-QED system consisting of three-level atoms confined in a cavity and coupled by a free-space control laser. A signal laser field is coupled into the cavity and its transmission through and reflection from the cavity form two output channels. We show that the free-space control laser induces destructive quantum interference in the excitation of the atom-cavity normal mode, which can be used to switch on or off the output signal light of the reflection and the transmission channels. When the control light is coupled to the atoms, the input signal light is nearly totally reflected and this means that there is no direct coupling of the control light and the signal light through the cavity-confined atoms. We present analytical and numerical calculations that show that this type of the interaction-free all-optical switching in the coupled cavity-atom system can be realized with high switching efficiencies and at low light intensities.

Electromagnetic control and improvement of nonclassicality in a strongly coupled single-atom cavity-QED system

Yufeng Han, Chengjie Zhu, Xiangyong Huang +1 more

We present a proposal to control and improve the nonclassicality of photons in a single-atom cavity-QED system with a strong coupling strength, where the atom is directly driven by external fields. Exploring the eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenstates of the system, we show that the dressed states can be optically manipulated by changing the control field intensity. In particular, tuning the control field frequency to be resonant with the one-photon excitation state, we show that the nonclassicality of cavity photons arising from the two-photon blockade can be actively controlled. We also show that there exists a magic control field Rabi frequency at which the two-photon blockade phenomenon can be significantly improved. The work presented here provides an optical method to control the statistical features of the cavity field that could find utility in nonclassical light generation, photon gateway operation, and exotic quantum-state generation.
