Abstract

The ground-state phase diagram of a spin $S=\frac{1}{2}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\text{XXZ}$ Heisenberg chain with spatially modulated Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction $\mathcal{H}={\ensuremath{\sum}}_{n}{J\left({S}_{n}^{x}{S}_{n+1}^{x}+{S}_{n}^{y}{S}_{n+1}^{y}\right)+{J}_{z}{S}_{n}^{z}{S}_{n+1}^{z}+[{D}_{0}+{(\ensuremath{-}1)}^{n}{D}_{1}]({S}_{n}^{x}{S}_{n+1}^{y}\ensuremath{-}{S}_{n}^{y}{S}_{n+1}^{x})}$ is studied using the continuum-limit bosonization approach and extensive density-matrix renormalization group computations. It is shown that the effective continuum-limit bosonized theory of the model is given by the double-frequency sine-Gordon model (DSG) where the frequencies, i.e., the scaling dimensions of the two competing cosine perturbation terms, depend on the effective anisotropy parameter ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{*}={J}_{z}/\sqrt{{J}^{2}+{D}_{0}^{2}+{D}_{1}^{2}}$. Exploring the ground-state properties of the DSG model we show that the zero-temperature phase diagram contains the following four phases: (i) the ferromagnetic phase at ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{*}\ensuremath{\le}\ensuremath{-}1$; (ii) the gapless Luttinger-liquid (LL) phase at $\ensuremath{-}1<{\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{*}<{\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\text{C1}}^{*}=\ensuremath{-}1/\sqrt{2}$; (iii) the gapped composite (C1) phase characterized by coexistence of the long-range-ordered (LRO) dimerization pattern $\ensuremath{\epsilon}\ensuremath{\sim}{(\ensuremath{-}1)}^{n}({\mathbf{S}}_{n}{\mathbf{S}}_{n+1})$ with the LRO alternating spin chirality pattern $\ensuremath{\kappa}\ensuremath{\sim}{(\ensuremath{-}1)}^{n}\left({S}_{n}^{x}{S}_{n+1}^{y}\ensuremath{-}{S}_{n}^{y}{S}_{n+1}^{x}\right)$ at ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\text{C1}}^{*}<{\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{*}<{\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\text{C2}}^{*}$; and (iv) at ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{*}>{\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\text{C2}}^{*}>1$ the gapped composite (C2) phase characterized in addition to the coexisting spin dimerization and alternating chirality patterns, by the presence of LRO antiferromagnetic order. The transition from the LL to the C1 phase at ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\text{C1}}^{*}$ belongs to the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless universality class, while the transition at ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{*}={\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\text{C2}}^{*}$ from C1 to C2 phase is of the Ising type.

Vector-spin-chirality order in a dimerized frustrated spin- 12 chain

Hiroshi Ueda, Shigeki Onoda

A frustrated spin-$1/2$ XXZ chain model comprising a ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor coupling with the bond alternation, ${J}_{1}(1\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}\ensuremath{\delta})<0$, and an antiferromagnetic second-neighbor exchange coupling ${J}_{2}>0$ is studied at zero and weak magnetic fields by means of density-matrix renormalization-group calculations of order parameters, correlation functions, and the entanglement entropy, as well as an Abelian bosonization analysis. At zero magnetic field, the bond alternation $\ensuremath{\delta}>0$ suppresses the gapless phase characterized by a vector-chiral (VC) long-range order (LRO) and a quasi-LRO of an incommensurate spin spiral, whereas this phase occupies a large region in the space of ${J}_{1}/{J}_{2}$ and the easy-plane exchange anisotropy for $\ensuremath{\delta}=0$ [S. Furukawa et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 257205 (2010)]. Then, four gapped phases are found to appear as the exchange anisotropy varies from the SU(2)-symmetric case to the U(1)-symmetric case: the Haldane dimer (D${}_{+}$) phase with the same sign of the $x,y$- and $z$-component dimer order parameters, two VC dimer (VCD${}_{+}$/VCD${}_{\ensuremath{-}}$) phases with the sign of the $z$-component dimer order parameter being unaltered/reversed, and the even-parity dimer (D${}_{\ensuremath{-}}$) phase. At small magnetic fields, a field-induced ring-exchange interaction, which is proportional to a staggered scalar chirality and a magnetic flux penetrating the associated triangle, drives a transition from the D${}_{\ensuremath{-}}$ phase into a VC-Neel-dimer (VCND) phase, but not from the D${}_{+}$ phase. This VCND phase is stable up to the large magnetic field at which the Zeeman term closes the spin gap. A possible relevance to Rb${}_{2}$Cu${}_{2}$Mo${}_{3}$O${}_{12}$ is discussed.

Magnetic phase diagram of a spin-1/2 X X Z chain with modulated Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

G. I. Japaridze, Hadi Cheraghi, S. Mahdavifar

We consider the ground-state phase diagram of a one-dimensional spin-1/2 XXZ chain with a spatially modulated Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in the presence of an alternating magnetic field applied along the z[over ̂] axis. The model is studied using the continuum-limit bosonization approach and the finite system exact numerical technique. In the absence of a magnetic field, the ground-state phase diagram of the model includes, besides the ferromagnetic and gapless Luttinger-liquid phases, two gapped phases: the composite (C1) phase characterized by the coexistence of long-range-ordered (LRO) alternating dimerization and spin chirality patterns, and the composite (C2) phase characterized by, in addition to the coexisting spin dimerization and alternating chirality patterns, the presence of LRO antiferromagnetic order. In the case of mentioned composite gapped phases, and in the case of a uniform magnetic field, the commensurate-incommensurate type quantum phase transitions from a gapful phase into a gapless phase have been identified and described using the bosonization treatment and finite chain exact diagonalization studies. The upper critical magnetic field corresponding to the transition into a fully polarized state has been also determined. It has been shown that the very presence of a staggered component of the magnetic field vapes the composite (C1) in favor of the composite gapped (C2) phase.

Ground-state phase diagram of a spin- 12 frustrated ferromagnetic XXZ chain: Haldane dimer phase and gapped/gapless chiral phases

Shunsuke Furukawa, Masahiro Sato, Shigeki Onoda +1 more

The ground-state phase diagram of a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXZ chain with competing ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor (${J}_{1}<0$) and antiferromagnetic second-neighbor (${J}_{2}>0$) exchange couplings is studied by means of the infinite time evolving block decimation algorithm and effective field theories. For the SU(2)-symmetric (Heisenberg) case, we show that the nonmagnetic phase in the range $\ensuremath{-}4<{J}_{1}/{J}_{2}<0$ has a small but finite ferromagnetic dimer order. We argue that this spontaneous dimer order is associated with effective spin-1 degrees of freedom on dimerized bonds, which collectively form a valence bond solid state as in the spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain (the Haldane spin chain). We thus call this phase the Haldane dimer phase. With easy-plane anisotropy, the model exhibits a variety of phases including the vector chiral phase with gapless excitations and the even-parity dimer and N\'eel phases with gapped excitations, in addition to the Haldane dimer phase. Furthermore, we show the existence of gapped phases with coexisting orders in narrow regions that intervene between the gapless chiral phase and any one of Haldane dimer, even-parity dimer, and N\'eel phases. Possible implications for quasi-one-dimensional edge-sharing cuprates are discussed.

Ground-state phase diagrams of frustrated spin-SXXZchains: Chiral ordered phases

Takashi Hikihara, Makoto Kaburagi, Hikaru Kawamura

The ground-state phase diagram of the frustrated spin-S XXZ chain with the competing nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings is studied numerically by using the density-matrix renormalization-group method for the cases of $S=1/2,$ $3/2,$ and $2.$ We are particularly interested in the possible gapless and gapped chiral phases, in which the chirality ${\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{l}{=S}_{l}^{x}{S}_{l+1}^{y}\ensuremath{-}{S}_{l}^{y}{S}_{l+1}^{x}$ exhibits a finite long-range order whereas the spin correlation decays either algebraically or exponentially. We show that the gapless chiral phase appears in a broad region of the phase diagram for general S. By contrast, the gapped chiral phase is found for integer S in a narrow region of the phase diagram, while it has not been identified for half-odd integer S within our numerical accuracy. By combining the results with our previous result for $S=1,$ we discuss the S dependence of the phase diagram. The prediction from a bosonization analysis on the decay exponent of the spin correlation is verified.

The XYZ chain with Dzyaloshinsky–Moriya interactions: from spin–orbit-coupled lattice bosons to interacting Kitaev chains

Sebastiano Peotta, Leonardo Mazza, Ettore Vicari +3 more

Using the density-matrix renormalization-group algorithm (DMRG) and a finite-size scaling analysis, we study the properties of the one-dimensional completely-anisotropic spin-1/2 XYZ model with Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interactions. The model shows a rich phase diagram: depending on the value of the coupling constants, the system can display different kinds of ferromagnetic order and Luttinger-liquid behavior. Transitions from ferromagnetic to Luttinger-liquid phases are first order. We thoroughly discuss the transition between different ferromagnetic phases, which, in the absence of DM interactions, belongs to the XX universality class. We provide evidence that the DM exchange term turns out to split this critical line into two separated Ising-like transitions and that in between a disordered phase may appear. Our study sheds light on the general problem of strongly-interacting spin-orbit-coupled bosonic gases trapped in an optical lattice and can be used to characterize the topological properties of superconducting nanowires in the presence of an imposed supercurrent and of interactions.

Quantum phase transitions beyond Landau-Ginzburg theory in one-dimensional space revisited

Christopher Mudry, Akira Furusaki, Takahiro Morimoto +1 more

The phase diagram of the quantum spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic ${J}_{1}^{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}^{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}$ XXZ chain was obtained by Haldane using bosonization techniques [Haldane, Phys. Rev. B 25, 4925 (1982); Phys. Rev. B 26, 5257 (1982)]. It supports three distinct phases for $0\ensuremath{\le}{J}_{2}^{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}/{J}_{1}^{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}<\frac{1}{2}$, i.e., a gapless algebraic spin-liquid phase, a gapped long-range ordered Neel phase, and a gapped long-range ordered dimer phase. Even though the Neel and dimer phases are not related hierarchically by a pattern of symmetry breaking, it was shown that they meet along a line of quantum critical points with a U(1) symmetry and central charge $c=1$. Here, we extend the analysis made by Haldane on the quantum spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic ${J}_{1}^{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}^{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}$ XYZ chain using both bosonization and numerical techniques. We show that there are three Neel phases and the dimer phase that are separated from each other by six planes of phase boundaries realizing Gaussian criticality when $0\ensuremath{\le}{J}_{2}^{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}/{J}_{1}^{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}<\frac{1}{2}$. We also show that each long-range ordered phase harbors topological point defects (domain walls) that are dual to those across the phase boundary in that a defect in one ordered phase locally binds the other type of order around its core. By using the bosonization approach, we identify the critical theory that describes simultaneous proliferation of these dual point defects, and show that it supports an emergent U(1) symmetry that originates from the discrete symmetries of the XYZ model. To confirm this numerically, we perform exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization-group calculations and show that the critical theory is characterized by the central charge $c=1$ with critical exponents that are consistent with those obtained from the bosonization approach. Furthermore, we generalize the field-theoretic description of direct continuous phase transition to higher dimensions, especially in $d=3$, by using a nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) with a topological term. In particular, we propose the $\ensuremath{\pi}$-flux phase on the cubic lattice with local quartic interactions as a platform for direct continuous phase transition and deconfined criticality. We discuss possible phase diagrams for the $\ensuremath{\pi}$-flux phase on the cubic lattice with these quartic interactions from the renormalization flow of NLSMs.
