Abstract

In this paper, we consider the feedback stabilization problem for $N$-level quantum angular momentum systems undergoing continuous-time measurements. By using stochastic and geometric control tools, we provide sufficient conditions on the feedback control law ensuring almost sure exponential convergence to a predetermined eigenstate of the measurement operator. In order to achieve these results, we establish general features of quantum trajectories which are of interest by themselves. We illustrate the results by designing a class of feedback control laws satisfying the above-mentioned conditions and finally we demonstrate the effectiveness of our methodology through numerical simulations for three-level quantum angular momentum systems.

Robust Feedback Stabilization of N -Level Quantum Spin Systems

Weichao Liang, Nina H. Amini, Paolo Mason

In this paper, we consider $N$-level quantum angular momentum systems interacting with electromagnetic fields undergoing quantum nondemolition measurements in continuous-time. We suppose unawareness of the initial state and physical parameters, entailing the introduction of an additional state representing the estimated quantum state. The evolution of the quantum state and its estimation is described by a coupled stochastic master equation. Here, we study the asymptotic behavior of such a system in the presence of a feedback controller. We provide sufficient conditions on the feedback controller and on the estimated parameters that guarantee exponential stabilization of the coupled stochastic system toward an eigenstate of the measurement operator. Furthermore, we estimate the corresponding rate of convergence. We also provide parametrized feedback laws satisfying such conditions. Our results show the robustness of the feedback stabilization strategy considered in [W. Liang, N. H. Amini, and P. Mason, SIAM J. Control Optim., 57 (2019), pp. 3939--3960] in the case of imprecise initialization of the estimated state and with respect to the unknown physical parameters.

On exponential stabilization of two-qubit systems

Weichao Liang, Nina H. Amini, Paolo Mason

In this paper, we consider a two-qubit system undergoing continuous-time measurements. In presence of multiple channels, we provide sufficient conditions on the continuous feedback control law ensuring almost sure exponential convergence to a predetermined Bell state. This is obtained by applying stochastic tools, Lyapunov methods and geometric control tools. With one channel, we establish asymptotic convergence towards a predetermined Bell state. In both cases, we provide explicit expressions of feedback control laws satisfying the above-mentioned conditions. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our methodology through numerical simulations.

Exponential stabilization of two-level quantum systems based on continuous noise-assisted feedback

Jie Wen, Yuanhao Shi, Jianfang Jia +1 more

The exponential stabilization of the eigenstates for two-level quantum systems based on continuous noise-assisted feedback control is investigated in this paper. Due to the symmetric structure of state space, quantum systems may converge to an undesired eigenstate under continuous measurement. In order to overcome the convergence obstacle, the continuous noise-assisted feedback strategy, in which the control signal is driven by an exogenous Brownian noise, is proposed to make the quantum systems converge to the target eigenstates exponentially, and the noise gain is designed as a continuously differentiable function of quantum state, which is negatively related to the distance between system state and the target eigenstate. In particular, the exponential convergence is proved based on the stability theory of stochastic differential equations. Moreover, the numerical simulations on a two-level quantum system are performed to verify the effectiveness of noise-assisted feedback control and study the influences of physical parameters and control parameters on convergence rate.

On Exponential Stabilization of Spin-1/2 Systems

Weichao Liang, Nina H. Amini, Paolo Mason

In this paper, we study the stabilization problem of quantum spin-1/2 systems under continuous-time measurements. In the case without feedback, we show exponential stabilization around the excited and ground state by providing a lower bound of the convergence rate. Based on stochastic Lyapunov techniques, we propose a parametrized measurement-based feedback which ensures exponential convergence toward the excited state. Moreover, we give a lower bound of the convergence rate for this case. Then, we discuss the effect of each parameter appeared in the control law in the convergence rate. Finally, we illustrate the efficiency of such feedback law through simulations.

Exponential Stochastic Stabilization of a Two-Level Quantum System via Strict Lyapunov Control

Gerardo Cardona, Alain Sarlette, Pierre Rouchon

This article provides a novel continuous-time state feedback control strategy to stabilize an eigenstate of the Hermitian measurement operator of a two-level quantum system. In open loop, such system converges stochastically to one of the eigenstates of the measurement operator. Previous work has proposed state feedback that destabilizes the undesired eigenstates and relies on a probabilistic analysis to prove convergence. In contrast, we here associate the state observer to an adaptive version of so-called Markovian feedback (essentially, proportional control) and we show that this leads to a global exponential convergence property with a strict Lyapunov function. Furthermore, besides the instantaneous measurement output, our controller only depends on the single coordinate along the measurement axis, which opens the way to replacing the full state observer by lower-complexity filters in the future.
