We compute the von Neumann and generalized R\'enyi entanglement entropies in the ground-state of the spin-
1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the square lattice using the modified spin-wave theory for finite lattices. The addition of a staggered magnetic field to regularize the zero modes associated with symmetry breaking is shown to be essential for obtaining well-behaved values for the entanglement entropy. The von Neumann and R\'enyi entropies obey an area law with additive logarithmic corrections, and are in good quantitative agreement with numerical results from valence bond quantum Monte Carlo and density matrix renormalization group calculations. We also compute the spin fluctuations and observe a multiplicative logarithmic correction to the area law in excellent agreement with quantum Monte Carlo calculations.
The valence-bond structure of spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets is closely related to quantum entanglement. We investigate measures of entanglement entropy based on transition graphs, which characterize state overlaps in the overcomplete valence-bond basis. The transition graphs can be generated using projector Monte Carlo simulations of ground states of specific Hamiltonians or using importance sampling of valence-bond configurations of amplitude-product states. We consider definitions of entanglement entropy based on the bonds or loops shared by two subsystems (bipartite entanglement). Results for the bond-based definition agree with a previously studied definition using valence-bond wave functions (instead of the transition graphs, which involve two states). For the one-dimensional Heisenberg chain, with uniform or random coupling constants, the prefactor of the logarithmic divergence with the size of the smaller subsystem agrees with exact results. For the ground state of the two-dimensional Heisenberg model (and also N\'eel-ordered amplitude-product states), there is a similar multiplicative violation of the area law. In contrast, the loop-based entropy obeys the area law in two dimensions while still violating it in one dimension---both behaviors in accord with expectations for proper measures of entanglement entropy.
We study a system of
N interacting triplons (the elementary excitations of a valence-bond solid) described by an effective interacting boson model derived within the bond operator formalism in order to determine the stability and the properties of many-triplon states. In particular, we consider the square lattice spin-$1/2\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}{J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model, focus on the intermediate parameter region where a quantum paramagnetic phase sets in, and consider the columnar valence-bond solid as a reference state. Within the bond operator theory, the Heisenberg model is mapped into an effective boson model in terms of triplet operators
t. The effective boson model is studied at the harmonic approximation and the energy of the triplons and the expansion of the triplon operators
b in terms of the triplet operators
t are determined. Such an expansion allows us to perform a second mapping and, therefore, determine an effective interacting boson model in terms of the triplon operators
b. We then consider systems with a fixed number
N of triplons and study the stability of many-triplon states within a mean-field approximation. We show that many-triplon states are stable, the lowest-energy ones are constituted by a small number of triplons, and the excitation gaps are finite. For
J2=0.48J1 and
0.52J1, we also calculate spin-spin and dimer-dimer correlation functions, dimer order parameters, and the bipartite von Neumann entanglement entropy within our mean-field formalism in order to determine the properties of the many-triplon state as a function of the triplon number
N. We find that the spin and the dimer correlations decay exponentially and that the entanglement entropy obeys an area law, regardless of the triplon number
N. Moreover, only for
J2=0.48J1, the spin correlations indicate that the many-triplon states with large triplon number
N might display a more homogeneous singlet pattern than the columnar valence-bond solid. We also comment on possible relations between the many-triplon states with large triplon number
N and gapped spin-liquid states.
We investigate the entanglement properties of the valence-bond-solid (VBS) state defined on two-dimensional lattices, which is the exact ground state of the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki model. It is shown that the entanglement entropy obeys an area law and the nonuniversal prefactor of the leading term is strictly less than
ln2. The analysis of entanglement spectra for various lattices reveals that the reduced density matrix associated with the VBS state is closely related to a thermal density matrix of a holographic spin chain, the spectrum of which is reminiscent of that of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain. This correspondence is further supported by comparing the entanglement entropy in the holographic spin chain with conformal field theory predictions.
We calculate the reduced density matrix of a block of integer spin- S 's in a q -deformed valence-bond-solid (VBS) state. This matrix is diagonalized exactly for an infinitely long block in an infinitely long chain. We construct an effective Hamiltonian with the same spectrum as the logarithm of the density matrix. We also derive analytic expressions for the von Neumann and Rényi entanglement entropies. For blocks of finite length, we calculate the eigenvalues of the reduced density matrix by perturbation theory and numerical diagonalization. These results enable us to describe the effects of finite-size corrections on the entanglement spectrum and entropy in this generalized VBS model.
We study the entanglement properties of a class of ground states defined by matrix product states, which are generalizations of the valence bond solid (VBS) state in one dimension. It is shown that the transfer matrix of these states can be related to representations of the Temperley–Lieb algebra, allowing an exact computation of Renyi entropy. For an alternating bipartition, we find that the Renyi entropy can be mapped to an eight vertex model partition function on a rotated lattice. We also show that for the VBS state, the Renyi entropy of the alternating partition is described by a critical field theory with central charge c = 1. The generalization to SU ( n ) VBS and its connection with a dimerization transition in the entanglement Hamiltonian is discussed.
