Construction and Universal Application of Entanglement-Erasing Partner States

Abstract

We investigate the subadditivity of the bipartite entanglement entropy (EE) of many-particle states, represented by Slater determinants, with respect to single particle excitations. In this setting, subadditivity can be phrased as erasure of EE, i.e., as a relative decrease in EE when adding excitations to the quantum state. We identify sets of single particle states that yield zero EE if jointly excited. Such states we dub entanglement erasing partner states (EEPS). These EEPS reveal a mechanism that describes how to disentangle two subspaces of a Hilbert space by exciting additional states. We demonstrate this general finding in Anderson and many-body localized models. The studied concept of entanglement erasure further enables us to derive the EE of Slater determinants in the free tight binding model. Here, our analytical findings show surprisingly good agreement with numerical results of the interacting XXX chain. The described EEPS further impose a universal, i.e., model independent, erasure of EE for randomly excited Slater determinants. This feature allows us to compute many-particle EE by means of the associated single particle states and the filling ratio. This novel finding can be employed to drastically reduce the computational effort in free models.

Entanglement Content of Quasiparticle Excitations

Olalla A. Castro-Alvaredo, Cecilia De Fazio, Benjamin Doyon +1 more

We investigate the quantum entanglement content of quasiparticle excitations in extended many-body systems. We show that such excitations give an additive contribution to the bipartite von Neumann and Rényi entanglement entropies that takes a simple, universal form. It is largely independent of the momenta and masses of the excitations and of the geometry, dimension, and connectedness of the entanglement region. The result has a natural quantum information theoretic interpretation as the entanglement of a state where each quasiparticle is associated with two qubits representing their presence within and without the entanglement region, taking into account quantum (in)distinguishability. This applies to any excited state composed of finite numbers of quasiparticles with finite de Broglie wavelengths or finite intrinsic correlation length. This includes particle excitations in massive quantum field theory and gapped lattice systems, and certain highly excited states in conformal field theory and gapless models. We derive this result analytically in one-dimensional massive bosonic and fermionic free field theories and for simple setups in higher dimensions. We provide numerical evidence for the harmonic chain and the two-dimensional harmonic lattice in all regimes where the conditions above apply. Finally, we provide supporting calculations for integrable spin chain models and other interacting cases without particle production. Our results point to new possibilities for creating entangled states using many-body quantum systems.

Entanglement in many-body eigenstates of quantum-chaotic quadratic Hamiltonians

Patrycja Łydżba, Marcos Rigol, Lev Vidmar

In a recent Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 180604 (2020)], we introduced a closed-form analytic expression for the average bipartite von Neumann entanglement entropy of many-body eigenstates of random quadratic Hamiltonians, namely, of Hamiltonians whose single-particle eigenstates have random coefficients in the position basis. A paradigmatic Hamiltonian for which the expression is valid is the quadratic Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK2) model in its Dirac fermion formulation. Here we show that the applicability of our result is much broader. Most prominently, it is also relevant for local Hamiltonians such as the three-dimensional (3D) Anderson model at weak disorder. Moreover, it describes the average entanglement entropy in Hamiltonians without particle-number conservation, such as the SYK2 model in the Majorana fermion formulation and the 3D Anderson model with additional terms that break particle-number conservation. We extend our analysis to the average bipartite second R\'enyi entanglement entropy of eigenstates of the same quadratic Hamiltonians, which is derived analytically and tested numerically. We conjecture that our results for the entanglement entropies of many-body eigenstates apply to quadratic Hamiltonians whose single-particle eigenstates exhibit quantum chaos, which we refer to as quantum-chaotic quadratic Hamiltonians.

Exact results for the entanglement in 1D Hubbard models with spatial constraints

Ioannis Kleftogiannis, Ilias Amanatidis, Vladislav Popkov

Abstract We investigate the entanglement in Hubbard models of hardcore bosons in 1 D , with an additional hardcore interaction on nearest-neighbouring sites. We derive analytical formulas for the bipartite entanglement entropy for any number of particles and system size, whose ratio determines the system filling. At the thermodynamic limit the entropy diverges logarithmically for all fillings, except for half-filling, with the universal prefactor 1/2 due to partial permutational invariance. We show how maximal entanglement can be achieved by controlling the interaction range between the particles and the filling which determines the empty space in the system. Our results show how entangled quantum phases can be created and controlled, by imposing spatial constraints on states formed in many-body systems of strongly interacting particles.

Typical entanglement entropy in systems with particle-number conservation

Yale Yauk, Rohit Patil, Yicheng Zhang +2 more

We calculate the typical bipartite entanglement entropy ${\ensuremath{\langle}{S}_{A}\ensuremath{\rangle}}_{N}$ in systems containing indistinguishable particles of any kind as a function of the total particle number $N$, the volume $V$, and the subsystem fraction $f={V}_{A}/V$, where ${V}_{A}$ is the volume of the subsystem. We expand our result as a power series ${\ensuremath{\langle}{S}_{A}\ensuremath{\rangle}}_{N}=afV+b\sqrt{V}+c+o(1)$, and find that $c$ is universal (i.e., independent of the system type), while $a$ and $b$ can be obtained from a generating function characterizing the local Hilbert space dimension. We illustrate the generality of our findings by studying a wide range of different systems, e.g., bosons, fermions, spins, and mixtures thereof. We provide evidence that our analytical results describe the entanglement entropy of highly excited eigenstates of quantum-chaotic spin and boson systems, which is distinct from that of integrable counterparts.

Target space entanglement in quantum mechanics of fermions and matrices

Sotaro Sugishita

Abstract We consider entanglement of first-quantized identical particles by adopting an algebraic approach. In particular, we investigate fermions whose wave functions are given by the Slater determinants, as for singlet sectors of one-matrix models. We show that the upper bounds of the general Rényi entropies are N log 2 for N particles or an N × N matrix. We compute the target space entanglement entropy and the mutual information in a free one-matrix model. We confirm the area law: the single-interval entropy for the ground state scales as $$ \frac{1}{3} $$ 1 3 log N in the large N model. We obtain an analytical $$ \mathcal{O}\left({N}^0\right) $$ O N 0 expression of the mutual information for two intervals in the large N expansion.

Entanglement in fermion systems

N. Gigena, R. Rossignoli

We analyze the problem of quantifying entanglement in pure and mixed states of fermionic systems with a fixed number parity yet not necessarily a fixed particle number. The mode entanglement between one single-particle level and its orthogonal complement is first considered, and an entanglement entropy for such a partition of a particular basis of the single-particle Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ is defined. The sum over all single-particle modes of this entropy is introduced as a measure of the total entanglement of the system with respect to the chosen basis and it is shown that its minimum over all bases of $\mathcal{H}$ is a function of the one-body density matrix. Furthermore, we show that if minimization is extended to all bases related through a Bogoliubov transformation, then the entanglement entropy is a function of the generalized one-body density matrix. These results are then used to quantify entanglement in fermion systems with four single-particle levels. For general pure states of such a system a closed expression for the fermionic concurrence is derived, which generalizes the Slater correlation measure defined by J. Schliemann et al. [Phys. Rev. A 64, 022303 (2001)], implying that particle entanglement may be seen as minimum mode entanglement. It is also shown that the entanglement entropy defined before is related to this concurrence by an expression analogous to that in the two-qubit case. For mixed states of this system the convex roof extension of the previous concurrence and entanglement entropy is evaluated analytically, extending the results in previous reference to general states.
