Abstract

We theoretically study the geometric effect of quantum dynamical evolution in the presence of a nonequilibrium noisy environment. We derive the expression of the time-dependent geometric phase in terms of the dynamical evolution and the overlap between the time evolved state and initial state. It is shown that the frequency shift induced by the environmental nonequilibrium feature plays a crucial role in the geometric phase and evolution path of the quantum dynamics. The nonequilibrium feature of the environment makes the length of the evolution path become longer and reduces the dynamical decoherence and non-Markovian behavior in the quantum dynamics.

Decoherence induced by non-Markovian noise in a nonequilibrium environment

Xiang-Ji Cai, Yujun Zheng

We investigate theoretically the dynamical dephasing of a quantum system induced by non-Markovian noise in a nonequilibrium environment. We derive the closed equation of the dephasing factor for the quantum system under the nonstationary non-Markovian dichotomic noise environment. It is shown that the nonequilibrium feature of the environment gives rise to a time-dependent frequency shift and suppresses the dynamical dephasing of the quantum system and the environmental backaction of coherence. The memory effect of the environmental noise can reduce the dynamical dephasing of the quantum system and make the coherent backaction from the environment prominent. The non-Markovian feature of the environment, however, may not result in non-Markovian behavior in the dephasing dynamics of the quantum system.

Quantum dynamical speedup in a nonequilibrium environment

Xiang-Ji Cai, Yujun Zheng

We theoretically study the dynamical speedup of a quantum system in a nonequilibrium environment. Based on the trace distance, we derive the generalized Margolus-Levitin and Mandelstam-Tamm types of bounds on the quantum speed limit time of a quantum system evolving from an arbitrary initial state. We demonstrate that the mechanism for the speedup of dynamical evolution is closely associated with both the energy of the system and exchange of information between the system and its environment. It is shown that the nonequilibrium feature of the environment can speed up the quantum evolution in both Markovian and non-Markovian dynamics regions. We emphasize that the non-Markovian effect of the system dynamics is neither necessary nor sufficient to speed up the quantum evolution in a nonequilibrium environment.

Nonunitary geometric phases: A qubit coupled to an environment with random noise

Fernando C. Lombardo, Paula I. Villar

We describe the decoherence process induced on a two-level quantum system in direct interaction with a nonequilibrium environment. The nonequilibrium feature is represented by a nonstationary random function corresponding to the fluctuating transition frequency between two quantum states coupled to the surroundings. In this framework, we compute the decoherence factors which have a characteristic ``dip'' related to the initial phases of the bath modes. We therefore study different types of environments, namely, ohmic and supraohmic. These environments present different decoherence time scales than the thermal environment we used to study. As a consequence, we compute analytically and numerically the nonunitary geometric phase for the qubit in a quasicyclic evolution under the presence of these particular nonequilibrium environments. We show in which cases decoherence effects could, in principle, be controlled in order to perform a measurement of the geometric phase using standard procedures.

Non-Markovian decoherence dynamics in nonequilibrium environments

Xiang-Ji Cai, Yujun Zheng

We theoretically investigate the non-Markovian dynamical decoherence of a quantum system coupled to nonequilibrium environments with nonstationary statistical properties. We show the time evolution of the decoherence factor in real-imaginary space to study the environment-induced energy renormalization and backaction of coherence which are associated with the unitary and nonunitary parts of the quantum master equation, respectively. It is also shown that the nonequilibrium decoherence dynamics displays a transition between Markovian and non-Markovian and the transition boundary depends on the environmental parameters. The results are helpful for further understanding non-Markovian dynamics and coherence backaction on an open quantum system from environments.

Geometric phase evolution of atom under non-Markovian environment

Liming Zheng, Songhao Liu, Wang Fa-Qiang +1 more

The geometric phase of two-level atom, under the non-Markovian effect of environment, is investigated from the microscopic Hamiltonian. The results show that the geometric phase of atom strongly coupled with cavity field is larger than that of atom weakly coupled with cavity field, and the difference between them becomes larger as the loss of environment increases. In the case of relatively small environment loss, the geometric phase of atom shows continuous or discontinuous evolution with time depending on different initial atom states, and the discontinuity range increases when the environment loss increases. In a word, the geometric phase exhibits complicated characteristics under non-Markovian environment.

Memory-induced geometric phase in non-Markovian open systems

Da-Wei Luo, J. Q. You, Hai-Qing Lin +2 more

Geometric phases have been shown to be feasible in implementing quantum gates to perform quantum information processing. For all the realistic applications, the environmental influence on the geometric phase and decoherence such as memory effects must be properly considered in order to achieve the required precision in geometric quantum computation. In this paper, we study the geometric phase for a generic open quantum system based on a microscopic model. A remarkable feature of the open system's geometric phase obtained from our theoretical formulation is that the geometric phase can be obtained regardless of the existence of the master equations, while the environmental noise features such as memory effects are fully accounted for. We demonstrate that the geometric phases for a general open quantum system can be fundamentally modified by its non-Markovian environments.
