Abstract

We study the Hubbard model on a square lattice, using the dynamical vertex approximation and the parquet approximation. These methods allow us to describe the mutual interference of spin-fluctuations in the particle-hole channel and superconducting fluctuations in the cooperon channel in an unbiased way. For small dopings we find predominant commensurable antiferromagnetic spin- and d-wave superconducting fluctuations; for larger doping incommensurate antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations are concomitant to triplet s-wave superconducting fluctuations.

Renormalized perturbation theory of magnetic instabilities in the two-dimensional Hubbard model at small doping

Andrey V. Chubukov, David M. Frenkel

We consider magnetic instabilities in the two-dimensional Hubbard model at small doping. We find that the renormalization of the effective interaction prevents an immediate instability of a commensurate antiferromagnetic state upon doping. At increased doping levels, our calculations indicate the occurrence of an instability in the channel of transverse spin fluctuations. This instability is known to lead to a spiral magnetic phase. We also consider a dynamical spin susceptibility near the instability and find that conventional spin waves play no role in the transition. Instead, the incommensurate instability is governed by collective fermionic excitations coupled to the spin background.

Superconductivity, antiferromagnetism, and phase separation in the two-dimensional Hubbard model: A dual-fermion approach

Junya Otsuki, Hartmut Hafermann, Alexander I. Lichtenstein

The dual-fermion approach offers a way to perform diagrammatic expansion around the dynamical mean field theory. Using this formalism, the influence of antiferromagnetic fluctuations on the self-energy is taken into account through ladder-type diagrams in the particle-hole channel. The resulting phase diagram for the (quasi-)two-dimensional Hubbard model exhibits antiferromagnetism and $d$-wave superconductivity. Furthermore, a uniform charge instability, i.e., phase separation, is obtained in the low-doping regime around the Mott insulator. We also examine spin/charge density wave fluctuations including $d$-wave symmetry. The model exhibits a tendency towards an unconventional charge density wave, but no divergence of the susceptibility is found.

Cooper Pairing in A Doped 2D Antiferromagnet with Spin-Orbit Coupling

Jingxiang Zhao, Qiang Gu

We study the two-dimensional Hubbard model with the Rashba type spin-orbit coupling within and beyond the mean-field theory. The antiferromagnetic ground state for the model at half-filling and the Cooper pairing induced by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations near half-filling are examined based on the random-phase approximation. We show that the antiferromagnetic order is suppressed and the magnetic susceptibility turns out to be anisotropic in the presence of the spin-orbit coupling. Energy spectrums of transverse spin fluctuations are obtained and the effective interactions between holes mediated by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations are deduced in the case of low hole doping. It seems that the spin-orbit coupling tends to form s+p-wave Cooper pairs, while the s+d-wave pairing is dominant when the spin-orbit coupling is absent.

Quantum Monte Carlo Simulations and Weak-Coupling Approximations for the Three-Band Hubbard Model

R. Putz, H. Endres, A. Muramatsu +1 more

We study the three-band Hubbard model for the cuprate superconductors using Quantum Monte Carlo simulations and the fluctuation exchange approximation including a self-consistent many-body renormalization of the single-particle propagator. The energy dispersion of the low-lying one-particle excitations is in very good agreement with spectroscopic measurements for a hole doping concentration δ = 0.25 of the CuO2 planes. At the same doping, we examine the spin susceptibility yielding a non-ordered phase with short-range incommensurate fluctuations near the antiferromagnetic wave vector. In the superconducting regime, the interaction vertex for the pairing correlation function in the extended s-wave channel shows a maximum for δ = 0.20, resembling the dependence of transition temperature Tc on doping.

Dual parquet scheme for the two-dimensional Hubbard model: Modeling low-energy physics of high- T c cuprates with high momentum resolution

Grigory V. Astretsov, G. Rohringer, Alexey N. Rubtsov

We present a method to treat the two-dimensional (2D) Hubbard model for parameter regimes which are relevant for the physics of the high-${T}_{c}$ superconducting cuprates. Unlike previous attempts to attack this problem, our approach takes into account all fluctuations in different channels on equal footing and is able to treat reasonable large lattice sizes up to $32\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}32$. This is achieved by the following three-step procedure: (i) We transform the original problem to a representation (dual fermions) in which all purely local correlation effects from the dynamical mean field theory are already considered in the bare propagator and bare interaction of the new problem. (ii) The strong $1/{(i\ensuremath{\nu})}^{2}$ decay of the bare propagator allows us to integrate out all higher Matsubara frequencies aside from the lowest using low-order diagrams. The new effective action depends only on the two lowest Matsubara frequencies which allows us to (iii) apply the two-particle self-consistent parquet formalism, which takes into account the competition between different low-energy bosonic modes in an unbiased way, on much finer momentum grids than usual. In this way, we were able to map out the phase diagram of the 2D Hubbard model as a function of temperature and doping. Consistently with the experimental evidence for hole-doped cuprates and previous dynamical cluster approximation calculations, we find an antiferromagnetic region at low doping and a superconducting dome at higher doping. Our results also support the role of the van Hove singularity as an important ingredient for the high value of ${T}_{c}$ at optimal doping. At small doping, the destruction of antiferromagnetism is accompanied by an increase of charge fluctuations supporting the scenario of a phase-separated state driven by quantum critical fluctuations.

Zinc Impurities in the 2D Hubbard model

Thomas Maier, Mark Jarrell

We study the two-dimensional Hubbard model with nonmagnetic Zn impurities modeled by binary diagonal disorder using Quantum Monte Carlo within the Dynamical Cluster Approximation. With increasing Zn content we find a strong suppression of d-wave superconductivity concomitant to a reduction of antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. $T_c$ vanishes linearly with Zn impurity concentration. The spin susceptibility changes from pseudogap to Curie-Weiss like behavior indicating the existence of free magnetic moments in the Zn doped system. We interpret these results within the RVB picture.
