Abstract

Abstract We discuss domain walls and defects in topological phases occurring as the Drinfeld center of some fusion category. Domain walls between such phases correspond to bimodules between the fusion categories. Point defects correspond to functors between the bimodules. A domain wall structure consists of a planar graph with faces labeled by fusion categories. Edges are labeled by bimodules. When the vertices are labeled by point defects we get a compound defect. We present an algorithm, called the domain wall structure algorithm, for computing the compound defect. We apply this algorithm to show that the bimodule associator , related to the O 3 obstruction of Etingof et al (2010 Quantum Topol . 1 209), is trivial for all domain walls of Vec Z / p Z . In the language of this paper, the ground states of the Levin–Wen model are compound defects. We use this to define a generalization of the Levin–Wen model with domain walls and point defects. The domain wall structure algorithm can be used to compute the ground states of these generalized Levin–Wen type models.

Computing data for Levin-Wen with defects

Jacob C. Bridgeman, Daniel Barter

We demonstrate how to do many computations for doubled topological phases with defects. These defects may be 1-dimensional domain walls or 0-dimensional point defects.Using Vec⁡(S3) as a guiding example, we demonstrate how domain wall fusion and associators can be computed using generalized tube algebra techniques. These domain walls can be both between distinct or identical phases. Additionally, we show how to compute all possible point defects, and the fusion and associator data of these. Worked examples, tabulated data and Mathematica code are provided.

Classification of gapped domain walls of topological orders in 2+1 dimensions: a Levin-Wen model realization

Y. F. Chen, Siyuan Wang, Yu Zhao +2 more

A bstract This paper introduces a novel systematic construction of gapped domain walls (GDWs) within the Levin-Wen (LW) model. By gluing two LW models along their open sides in a compatible way, we achieve a complete GDW classification by subsets of bulk input data, which encompass the classifications in terms of bimodule categories. A generalized bimodule structure is introduced to capture domain-wall excitations. Furthermore, we demonstrate that folding along any GDW yields a gapped boundary (GB) described by a Frobenius algebra of the input UFC for the folded model, thus bridging our GDW classification and the GB classification in [1].

2 Models for gapped boundaries and domain walls

Alexei Kitaev, Liang Kong

We define a class of lattice models for two-dimensional topological phases with boundary such that both the bulk and the boundary excitations are gapped. The bulk part is constructed using a unitary tensor category $\calC$ as in the Levin-Wen model, whereas the boundary is associated with a module category over $\calC$. We also consider domain walls (or defect lines) between different bulk phases. A domain wall is transparent to bulk excitations if the corresponding unitary tensor categories are Morita equivalent. Defects of higher codimension will also be studied. In summary, we give a dictionary between physical ingredients of lattice models and tensor-categorical notions.

Fusing binary interface defects in topological phases: The Z/pZ case

Jacob C. Bridgeman, Daniel Barter, Corey Jones

A binary interface defect is any interface between two (not necessarily invertible) domain walls. We compute all possible binary interface defects in Kitaev’s Z/pZ model and all possible fusions between them. Our methods can be applied to any Levin-Wen model. We also give physical interpretations for each of the defects in the Z/pZ model. These physical interpretations provide a new graphical calculus, which can be used to compute defect fusion.

Weak Hopf tube algebra for domain walls between 2d gapped phases of Turaev-Viro TQFTs

Zhian Jia, Sheng Tan

A bstract We investigate domain walls between 2 d gapped phases of Turaev-Viro type topological quantum field theories (TQFTs) by constructing domain wall tube algebras. We begin by analyzing the domain wall tube algebra associated with bimodule categories, and then extend the construction to multimodule categories over N base fusion categories. We prove that the resulting tube algebra is naturally equipped with a C ∗ weak Hopf algebra structure. We show that topological excitations localized on domain walls are classified by representations of the corresponding domain wall tube algebra, in the sense that the functor category of bimodules admits a fusion-preserving embedding into the representation category of the domain wall tube algebra. We further establish the folding trick and Morita theory in this context. Then, most crucially, we provide a rigorous construction of the Drinfeld quantum double from weak Hopf boundary tube algebras using a skew-pairing, and establish an isomorphism between domain wall tube algebra and Drinfeld quantum double of boundary tube algebras. Motivated by the correspondence between the domain wall tube algebra and the quantum double of the boundary tube algebras, we introduce the notion of an N -tuple algebra and demonstrate how it arises in the multimodule domain wall setting. Finally, we consider defects between two domain walls, showing that such defects can be characterized by representations of a domain wall defect tube algebra. We briefly outline how these defects can be systematically treated within this representation-theoretic framework.

Generalized comodule tube algebras for boundary and domain wall defects of (2+1)D topological order

Zhian Jia, Sheng Tan

The tube algebra, which carries the structure of a $C^*$ weak Hopf algebra, is a fundamental tool for characterizing topological excitations in topological phases. In this work, we generalize the tube algebra framework to codimension-2 defects in $(2+1)$D gapped phases described by Turaev--Viro--Barrett--Westbury TQFTs, with particular emphasis on Levin--Wen string-net models. We show that such codimension-2 defects are described by a \emph{defect tube algebra}, which naturally carries the structure of a comodule algebra over the weak Hopf tube algebra associated with the topological excitations. Boundary and domain wall defects are then characterized by the representations of the corresponding boundary and domain wall defect tube algebras. In particular, a domain wall defect tube algebra can be regarded as a generalized Drinfeld double of the tube algebras associated with the two adjacent boundary defects. More generally, for a domain wall joining $N$ bulk phases, the associated domain wall defect tube algebra can be viewed as an $N$-tuple algebra. This perspective extends naturally to general $k$-defects, namely codimension-2 defects joining $k$ codimension-1 defects, for which the resulting generalized tube algebra carries the structure of a multicomodule algebra.
