Abstract

Abstract We obtain the ground state magnetization of the Heisenberg and XXZ spin chains in a magnetic field h as a series in , where h c is the smallest field for which the ground state is fully polarized. All the coefficients of the series can be computed in closed form through a recurrence formula that involves only algebraic manipulations. For some values of the anisotropy parameter the expansion is numerically observed to be convergent in the full range . To that end we express the free energy at mean magnetization per site as a series in whose coefficients can be similarly recursively computed in closed form. This series converges for all . The recurrence is nothing but the Bethe equations when their roots are written as a double series in their corresponding Bethe number and in . It can also be used to derive the corrections in finite size, that correspond to the spectrum of a free compactified boson whose Luttinger parameter can be expanded as a similar series. The method presumably applies to a large class of models: it also successfully applies to a case where the Bethe roots lie on a curve in the complex plane.

On the analytical evaluation of the magnetization of ferromagnetic lattices

Yamen Hamdouni

We investigate analytically the magnetization of Heisenberg ferromagnetic lattices in one and two dimensions, and we derive approximate expressions that are valid at high and low temperatures. In the case of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg XX chain in a transverse field, we show that, when the applied magnetic field $h$ exceeds its critical value $h_c=J$, where $J$ is the exchange coupling constant, the magnetization per site deviates at low temperatures from its saturation value, $\frac{1}{2}$, following a power series with terms involving the power laws $T^{1/2}$, $T^{3/2}$, $T^{5/2}$ ..etc. When $h<h_c$, the zero temperature magnetization per spin turns out to be equal to $\frac{1}{\pi}\arcsin(\frac{h}{h_c})$. In this case, the temperature dependence of the magnetization is given by a series expansion with power laws of the form $T$, $T^3$, $T^{5}$,...etc. In both cases, the coefficients of the expansions are temperature-dependent and are explicitly derived. Using he properties of the Eulerian polynomials, we show that, because of the fast convergence of the derived series for the Fermi-Dirac and the Bose-Einstein distributions, it is possible (in particular in strong magnetic fields) to express the magnetization of the Heisenberg model in a simple analytical form. Furthermore, the analytical results are compared with the exact numerical ones.

Study of the ground state of the one-dimensional Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain

K.R. de Ruiter

We discuss the ground state of the Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain in one dimension, considering nearest neighbor interactions. In the thermodynamic limit the energy is calculated analytically in several ways. We start by applying the Bethe ansatz to calculate the exact ground state energy of the XXX Heisenberg model. Next we study small perturbations of the spin anisotropy, the parameter for the interaction in the z-direction for the XXZ model, by applying time-independent perturbation theory. In addition we expand an exact integral expression of the energy of the XXZ model around the spin anisotropy in the thermodynamic limit. The results are compared to numerical solutions, which are obtained by means of exact diagonalization up to twelve lattice sites. We find that for ten or more lattice sites the numerics agree well with the expectation from the analytical calculations. Finally the concept of integrability is discussed in the context of the Heisenberg model.

Ground state of the quantum symmetric finite-size XXZ spin chain with anisotropy parameter Delta = ½

V Fridkin, Yu Stroganov, D Zagier

We find an analytic solution of the Bethe Ansatz equations for the special case of a finite XXZ spin chain with free boundary conditions and with a complex surface field which provides for U q ( sl (2)) symmetry of the Hamiltonian. More precisely, we find one nontrivial solution, corresponding to the ground state of the system with anisotropy parameter = ½ corresponding to q 3 = -1.

Finite-size effects in the integrable XXZ Heisenberg model with arbitrary spin

Holger Frahm, Naichang Yu

The finite-size effects in the spectrum of the integrable XXZ Heisenberg chain with arbitrary spin-S are studied analytically on the basis of the string hypothesis for bound states and numerically by solving the associated Bethe ansatz equations. The finite-size corrections to the spectrum and to the low-temperature behaviour of the free energy are found to be similar to the universal predictions for conformally invariant theories, although the model is, in general, not Lorentz invariant, since it can have an arbitrary number of branches for low-energy excitations with different Fermi velocities depending on the value of S and the anisotropy parameter gamma .

Finite-size corrections in theXYZHeisenberg chain

H. O. Mártin, Hector J. de Vega

We compute the large but finite-size corrections to the XYZ spin-(1/2) Heisenberg chain using a method recently proposed by de Vega and Woynarovich. We derive in closed form the corrections to the ground-state energy and the function \ensuremath{\sigma}(\ensuremath{\lambda}) (finite-size analog to the root density). Different asymptotic regimes are found when the number of sites goes to infinity depending on the two parameters of the Hamiltonian.

Heisenberg XXZ model and quantum Galilei group

F Bonechi, E Celeghini, R Giachetti +2 more

The 1D Heisenberg spin model with an anisotropy of the XXZ type is analysed in terms of the symmetry given by the quantum Galilei group Gamma q (1). For a chain with an infinite number of sites the authors show that the magnon excitations and the s=1/2, n-magnon bound states are determined by the algebra. In this case the Gamma q (1) symmetry provides a description naturally compatible with the Bethe ansatz. The recurrence relations determined by Gamma q (1) permit one to express the energy of the n-magnon bound states in a closed form in terms of Tchebischeff polynomials.
