Abstract

An analogous model system for high-dimensional quantum entanglement is proposed, based on the angular and radial degrees of freedom of the improved Laguerre Gaussian mode. Experimentally, we observed strong violations of the Bell-CGLMP inequality for maximally non-separable states of dimension 2 through 10. The results for violations in classical non-separable state are in very good agreement with quantum instance, which illustrates that our scheme can be a useful platform to simulate high-dimensional non-local entanglement. Additionally, we found that the Bell measurements provide sufficient criteria for identifying mode separability in a high-dimensional space. Similar to the two-dimensional spin-orbit non-separable state, the proposed high-dimensional angular-radial non-separable state may provide promising applications for classical and quantum information processing.

High-dimensional orbital angular momentum entanglement concentration based on Laguerre–Gaussian mode selection

Wuhong Zhang, Ming Su, Ziwen Wu +3 more

Twisted photons enable the definition of a Hilbert space beyond two dimensions by orbital angular momentum (OAM) eigenstates. Here we propose a feasible entanglement concentration experiment, to enhance the quality of high-dimensional entanglement shared by twisted photon pairs. Our approach is started from the full characterization of entangled spiral bandwidth, and is then based on the careful selection of the Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) modes with specific radial and azimuthal indices p and l. In particular, we demonstrate the possibility of high-dimensional entanglement concentration residing in the OAM subspace of up to 21 dimensions. By means of LabVIEW simulations with spatial light modulators, we show that the Shannon dimensionality could be employed to quantify the quality of the present concentration. Our scheme holds promise in quantum information applications defined in high-dimensional Hilbert space.

Violation of a Bell inequality in two-dimensional state spaces for radial quantum number

Dongkai Zhang, Xiaodong Qiu, Wuhong Zhang +1 more

The Bell inequalities for azimuthal quantum number, i.e., orbital angular momentum, have been extensively reported to show quantum correlations between the spatial degree of freedom of entangled photon pairs. Here we investigate instead the Bell inequalities for radial quantum number. We demonstrate, both theoretically and experimentally, the violation of a suitable Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt Bell inequality for the radial index $p$ of the Laguerre-Gaussian mode, thus manifesting the entanglement in the radial structure of two-photon wave functions.

Entangled Bessel-Gaussian beams

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) entanglement is investigated in the Bessel-Gaussian (BG) basis. Having a readily adjustable radial scale, BG modes provide an alternative basis for OAM entanglement over Laguerre-Gaussian modes. We show that the OAM bandwidth in terms of BG modes can be increased by selection of particular radial wavevectors and leads to a flattening of the spectrum, which allows for higher dimensionality in the entangled state. We demonstrate entanglement in terms of BG modes by performing a Bell-type experiment and showing a violation of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality for the ℓ = ±1 subspace. In addition, we use quantum state tomography to indicate higher-dimensional entanglement in terms of BG modes.

High-dimensional Bell-state preparation and characterization based on single-photon radial and azimuthal mode multiplexing

Feng-Pei Li, Feng-Pei Li, Shiyue Jia +4 more

Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) modes are characterized by two integer parameters, p and l , which correspond to the radial and azimuthal modes of photons. Both degrees of freedom are discrete and high-dimensional, and each can be used to construct a high-dimensional Hilbert space. Here, we use the radial-azimuthal modes of a single photon to construct two-dimensional and four-dimensional Bell states and experimentally realize full single-photon Bell-state characterization, thereby verifying the orthogonality and completeness of the Bell states. Subsequently, we measure the magnitude and phase of a four-dimensional superposition state in a 16-dimensional Hilbert space, obtaining results in good agreement with theoretical predictions, which further confirms the completeness of the four-dimensional Bell basis. Our experiment demonstrates that the radial and azimuthal modes of a single photon play equally important roles. Multiplexing these two degrees of freedom enables the construction of higher-dimensional Hilbert spaces and significantly enhances the information-carrying capacity of a single photon. Our results hold potential applications in the development of quantum communication protocols with high channel capacity.

Radial–angular entanglement in Laguerre–Gaussian mode superpositions

S. Asokan, J. Solomon Ivan

Classical optic entanglement between the radial and angular degrees of freedom in Laguerre-Gaussian mode superpositions is explored within the framework of symmetric first-order optical systems. The Gouy phase picked by a Laguerre-Gaussian mode on free propagation is seen to be of consequence to the radial-angular entanglement in the mode superpositions. We illustrate examples of mode superpositions for which radial-angular entanglement is preserved on passage through symmetric first-order optical systems. An indicator of radial-angular entanglement in two-mode Laguerre-Gaussian superpositions is demonstrated to be a robust free space signaler in the presence of atmospheric turbulence, through examples.

Manipulating the radial components of LG pump beam for ultrahigh-dimensional maximally entangled orbital angular momentum states

Chuan Xu, Lintao Xiao, Jianlang He +5 more

High-dimensional maximally entangled orbital angular momentum (OAM) states are a promising resource for enhancing information capacity and robustness in quantum communication. However, it still lacks an effective method to increase the state dimensionality. Here, we theoretically propose an efficient scheme to generate maximally entangled OAM states of ultrahigh dimensionality by manipulating the radial components of a Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) pump beam. By optimizing the complex amplitudes of multiple radial modes of the LG pump light, one can feasibly achieve 101-dimensional OAM-based maximally entangled states. Our scheme has potential applications in high capacity quantum communication networks.
