Abstract

We derive the definition of the Berry phase for the adiabatic transport of a composite fermion (CF) in a half-filled composite Fermi liquid (CFL).It is found to be different from that adopted in previous investigations by Geraedts et al.For the standard CFL wave function, we analytically show that the Berry curvature is uniformly distributed in the momentum space. For the Jain-Kamilla wave function, we numerically show that its Berry curvature has a continuous distribution inside the Fermi sea and vanishes outside. We conclude that the CF with respect to both the microscopic wave functions is not a massless Dirac particle.

Dirac Fermion Hierarchy of Composite Fermi Liquids

Jie Wang

Composite Fermi liquids (CFLs) are compressible states that can occur for 2D interacting fermions confined in the lowest Landau level at certain Landau level fillings. They have been understood as Fermi seas formed by composite fermions which are bound states of electromagnetic fluxes and electrons as reported by Halperin, Lee, and Read [Phys. Rev. B 47, 7312 (1993)PRBMDO0163-182910.1103/PhysRevB.47.7312]. At half filling, an explicitly particle-hole symmetric theory based on Dirac fermions was proposed by Son [Phys. Rev. X 5, 031027 (2015)PRXHAE2160-330810.1103/PhysRevX.5.031027] as an alternative low energy description. In this work, we investigate the Berry curvature of CFL model wave functions at a filling fraction of one-quarter, and observe that it is uniformly distributed over the Fermi sea except at the center where an additional π phase was found. Motivated by this, we propose an effective theory which generalizes Son's half filling theory, by internal gauge flux attachment, to all filling fractions in which fermionic CFLs can occur. The numerical results support the idea of internal gauge flux attachment.

Berry Phase and Model Wave Function in the Half-Filled Landau Level

Scott Geraedts, Jie Wang, Edward H. Rezayi +1 more

We construct model wave functions for the half-filled Landau level parametrized by "composite fermion occupation-number configurations" in a two-dimensional momentum space, which correspond to a Fermi sea with particle-hole excitations. When these correspond to a weakly excited Fermi sea, they have a large overlap with wave functions obtained by the exact diagonalization of lowest-Landau-level electrons interacting with a Coulomb interaction, allowing exact states to be identified with quasiparticle configurations. We then formulate a many-body version of the single-particle Berry phase for adiabatic transport of a single quasiparticle around a path in momentum space, and evaluate it using a sequence of exact eigenstates in which a single quasiparticle moves incrementally. In this formulation the standard free-particle construction in terms of the overlap between "periodic parts of successive Bloch wave functions" is reinterpreted as the matrix element of a "momentum boost" operator between the full Bloch states, which becomes the matrix elements of a Girvin-MacDonald-Platzman density operator in the many-body context. This allows the computation of the Berry phase for the transport of a single composite fermion around the Fermi surface. In addition to a phase contributed by the density operator, we find a phase of exactly π for this process.

Interlayer coherent composite Fermi liquid in Half-filled Landau Level bilayers, a window toward the hidden $π$ Berry phase

Yizhi You

For interacting 2D electrons in the presence of magnetic field at half filling, the system forms a `composite Fermi liquid(CFL)' with emergent Fermi surface and exhibits metallic behavior, based on the standard Halperin, Lee, and Read(HLR) field theory. Recently, Son introduces a composite Dirac theory as the low energy effective description of Half-filled Landau Level. Such theory exhibits particle-hole symmetry and the underlying composite Fermi surface displays a robust $π$ Berry phase. In this paper, we start from the bilayer Half-filled Landau Level system where the two composite Fermi surface acquires interlayer coherence and forms bonding/anti-bonding composite fermi sea. The corresponding interlayer coherent composite Fermi liquid(ICCFL) phase provides a straightforward landscape to verify the Dirac nature in Son's theory and extract the hidden Berry phase structure of the composite Fermi surface. The ICCFL phase contains two Fermi surfaces which are detached in most regions but adhesive at two hot spots. Such nematic structure is a consequence of the Berry phase encoded in the Dirac Fermi surface which is absent in HLR theory. Due to the nematicity in ICCFL, the system supports half-quantum vortex with deconfined $\fracπ{2}$ gauge flux and the phase transition toward ICCFL contains a Lifshitz criticality with $z=3$ dynamical exponent. In addition, the exciton order parameter carries topological spin number so the ICCFL contains a unique Wen-Zee term which connects EM response with the background geometry curvature.

Is the composite fermion a dirac particle?

Dam Thanh Son

We propose a particle-hole symmetric theory of the Fermi-liquid ground state of a half-filled Landau level. This theory should be applicable for a Dirac fermion in the magnetic field at charge neutrality, as well as for the v = 1/2 quantum Hall ground state of nonrelativistic fermions in the limit of negligible inter-Landau-level mixing. We argue that when particle-hole symmetry is exact, the composite fermion is a massless Dirac fermion, characterized by a Berry phase of π around the Fermi circle. We write down a tentative effective field theory of such a fermion and discuss the discrete symmetries, in particular, C P. The Dirac composite fermions interact through a gauge, but non-Chern-Simons, interaction. The particle-hole conjugate pair of Jain-sequence states at filling factors n/(2n + 1) and (n + 1)/(2n + 1), which in the conventional composite fermion picture corresponds to integer quantum Hall states with different filling factors, n and n + 1, is now mapped to the same half-integer filling factor n + 1/2 of the Dirac composite fermion. The Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian states are interpreted as d -wave Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer paired states of the Dirac fermion with orbital angular momentum of opposite signs, while s -wave pairing would give rise to a particle-hole symmetric non-Abelian gapped phase. When particle-hole symmetry is not exact, the Dirac fermion has a C P -breaking mass. The conventional fermionic Chern-Simons theory is shown to emerge in the nonrelativistic limit of the massive theory.

Berry phase of the composite-fermion Fermi sea: Effect of Landau-level mixing

Songyang Pu, Mikael Fremling, Jainendra K. Jain

We construct explicit lowest-Landau-level wave functions for the composite-fermion Fermi sea and its low-energy excitations following a recently developed approach [Pu, Wu, and Jain, Phys. Rev. B 96, 195302 (2017)] and demonstrate them to be very accurate representations of the Coulomb eigenstates. We further ask how the Berry phase associated with a closed loop around the Fermi circle, predicted to be $\ensuremath{\pi}$ in a Dirac composite fermion theory satisfying particle-hole symmetry [D. T. Son, Phys. Rev. X 5, 031027 (2015)], is affected by Landau-level mixing. For this purpose, we consider a simple model wherein we determine the variational ground state as a function of Landau-level mixing within the space spanned by two basis functions: the lowest-Landau-level projected and the unprojected composite-fermion Fermi sea wave functions. We evaluate Berry phase for a path around the Fermi circle within this model following a recent prescription, and find that it rotates rapidly as a function of Landau-level mixing. We also consider the effect of a particle-hole symmetry-breaking three-body interaction on the Berry phase while confining the Hilbert space to the lowest Landau level. Our study deepens the connection between the $\ensuremath{\pi}$ Berry phase and the exact particle-hole symmetry in the lowest Landau level.

Trial wave functions for a Composite Fermi liquid on a torus

Mikael Fremling, Niall Moran, Johannes K. Slingerland +1 more

We study the two-dimensional electron gas in a magnetic field at filling fraction $ν=\frac{1}{2}$. At this filling the system is in a gapless state which can be interpreted as a Fermi liquid of composite fermions. We construct trial wave functions for the system on a torus, based on this idea, and numerically compare these to exact wave functions for small systems found by exact diagonalization. We find that the trial wave functions give an excellent description of the ground state of the system, as well as its charged excitations, in all momentum sectors. We analyze the dispersion of the composite fermions and the Berry phase associated with dragging a single fermion around the Fermi surface and comment on the implications of our results for the current debate on whether composite fermions are Dirac fermions.
