Abstract

Abstract The Weyl‐Wigner‐Moyal formalism for quantum particle with discrete internal degrees of freedom is developed. A one to one correspondence between operators in the Hilbert space and functions on the phase space is found. The expressions for the Stratonovich‐Weyl quantiser, star product and Wigner functions of such systems for arbitrary values of spin are obtained in detail. As examples the Landau levels and the corresponding Wigner functions for a spin nonrelativistic particle as well as the magnetic resonance for a spin nonrelativistic uncharged particle are analysed.

Discrete Moyal-type representations for a spin

Stephan Heiss, Stefan Weigert

In Moyal's formulation of quantum mechanics, a quantum spin s is described in terms of continuous symbols, i.e., by smooth functions on a two-dimensional sphere. Such prescriptions to associate operators with Wigner functions, P or Q symbols, are conveniently expressed in terms of operator kernels satisfying the Stratonovich-Weyl postulates. In analogy to this approach, a discrete Moyal formalism is defined on the basis of a modified set of postulates. It is shown that appropriately modified postulates single out a well-defined set of kernels that give rise to discrete symbols. Now operators are represented by functions taking values on ${(2s+1)}^{2}$ points of the sphere. The discrete symbols contain no redundant information, contrary to the continuous ones. The properties of the resulting discrete Moyal formalism for a quantum spin are worked out in detail and compared to the continuous formalism.

Moyal Formulation of Quantum Mechanics

Manuel Gadella

This is a review paper on the formulation of nonrelativistic Quantum Mechanics on Phase Space. In an overlook to the traditional approach, we present the basic concepts including the Weyl mapping, the Wigner function, the Moyal propagator and the Spectral projections. We discuss the advantages and the disadvantages of this formulation. We apply it to the study of quadratic Hamiltonians. The Stratonovich-Weyl correspondence is presented as the natural framework in which the theory can be extended to include spin, relativity and constraints. The theory of identical particles is also considered.

The Weyl – Wigner – Moyal Formalism on a Discrete Phase Space. II. The Photon Wigner Function

Maciej Przanowski, Jaromir Tosiek, Francisco J. Turrubiates

Abstract Classical model of light in helicity formalism is presented. Then quantum mechanical point of view at photons – construction and interpretation of two equivalent photon wave functions are proposed. Quantum mechanics of photon is investigated. The Białynicki – Birula scalar product and the generalized Hermitian conjugation of linear operator are discussed. Quantum description of light on a phase space based on the Weyl – Wigner – Moyal approach is developed. A photon Wigner function is built. Some explicit photon Wigner functions for different kernels are obtained.

The Weyl-Wigner-Moyal formalism for spin

Feifei Li, Carol Braun, Anupam Garg

The Weyl-Wigner-Moyal formalism is developed for spin by means of a correspondence between spherical harmonics and spherical-harmonic tensor operators. The exact asymptotic relation among the P , Q , and Weyl symbols is found, and the analogue of the Moyal expansion is developed for the Weyl symbol of the product of two operators in terms of the symbols for the individual operators. It is shown that in the classical limit, the Weyl symbol for a commutator equals i times the Poisson bracket of the corresponding Weyl symbols.

The Phase Space Formulation of Quantum Mechanics

Marcos Mariño

This chapter presents Wigner’s approach to quantum mechanics, based on the Wigner function in phase space. It explains Wigner–Weyl quantization, which makes it possible to associate functions on phase space to wave functions and operators, and it develops the technology to do quantum mechanics in this formalism. This includes the star product, Moyal evolution, and star-eigenvalue equations. It also develops semiclassical methods in this formulation, and it has a section on Berry’s semiclassical formula for the Wigner function in one-dimensional systems.

From the discrete Weyl–Wigner formalism for symmetric ordering to a number–phase Wigner function

Maciej Przanowski, Jaromir Tosiek

The general Weyl–Wigner formalism in finite dimensional phase spaces is investigated. Then this formalism is specified to the case of symmetric ordering of operators in an odd-dimensional Hilbert space. A respective Wigner function on the discrete phase space is found and the limit, when the dimension of Hilbert space tends to infinity, is considered. It is shown that this limit gives the number–phase Wigner function in quantum optics. Analogous results for the “almost” symmetric ordering in an even-dimensional Hilbert space are obtained. Relations between the discrete Wigner functions introduced in our paper and some other discrete Wigner functions appearing in literature are studied.
