Abstract

The existence of stable bound states of three solitons in a Bose-Einstein condensate with nonlocal interactions is demonstrated by means of the variational approach (VA) and numerical simulations. The potential of interaction between solitons derived from VA is shown to be of molecular type, i.e., attractive at long distances and repulsive at short distances. Normal modes of a three-soliton molecule are investigated by computing small amplitude oscillations of individual solitons near their equilibrium positions. Symmetric and asymmetric stretched states of the molecule are prepared and used as initial conditions in numerical simulations of the nonlocal Gross-Pitaevskii equation. As opposed to usual triatomic molecules, we find that the frequency of the asymmetric mode of a three-soliton molecule is smaller than the one of the symmetric mode. Possible experimental settings for the observation of these results are briefly discussed.

Matter-wave bright solitons in bose-einstein condensate / Abdelaziz Benseghir

We investigate the properties of modulational instability in the Salerno equation in quasi-one dimension in Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). We analyzed the regions of modulational instability of nonlinear plane waves and determine the conditions of its existence in BEC. The existence and stability of strongly localized modes in discrete media is investigated with the framework of the Salerno model by using a linear analysis method. The regions of stability and instability are determined. Also the existence of localized modes for different values of parameters is shown numerically by homoclinic orbits intersection method. The response of Bose–Einstein condensates is studied with strong dipole–dipole atomic interactions to periodically varying perturbation. The dynamics is governed by the Gross–Pitaevskii equation with an additional nonlinear term, corresponding to nonlocal dipolar interactions. A mathematical model, based on the variational approximation, has been developed and applied to study parametric excitation of the condensates due to coefficient of nonlocal nonlinearity varying periodically. The model predicts the waveform of solitons in dipolar condensates and describes their small amplitude dynamics quite accurately. Theoretical predictions are verified by numerical simulations of the nonlocal Gross–Pitaevskii equation and a good agreement between them is found. The results can lead to better understanding of the properties of ultra-cold quantum gases, such as 52Cr, 164Dy and 168Er, where the long-range dipolar atomic interactions dominate the usual contact interactions. Dynamics of a matter wave soliton bouncing on the reflecting surface (atomic mirror) under the effect of gravity has been studied by analytical and numerical means. The iv analytical description is based on the variational approach. Resonant oscillations of the soliton's center of mass and width, induced by appropriate modulation of the atomic scattering length and the slope of the linear potential are analyzed. In numerical experiments, we observe the Fermi type acceleration of the soliton when the vertical position of the reflecting surface is periodically varied in time. Analytical predictions are compared with the results of numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and a qualitative agreement between them is found.

Time-dependent variational approach for Bose–Einstein condensates with nonlocal interaction

Fernando Haas, Bengt Eliasson

The nonlinear dynamics of self-bound Bose–Einstein matter waves under the action of an attractive nonlocal and a repulsive local interaction is analyzed by means of a time-dependent variational formalism. The mean-field model described by the Gross–Pitaevskii equation (GPE) is reduced to a single second-order conservative ordinary differential equation admitting a potential function. The stable fixed points and the linear oscillation frequencies of the breather modes are determined. The chosen nonlocal interactions are a Gaussian-shaped potential and a van der Waals-like potential. The variational solutions are compared with direct numerical simulations of the GPE, for each of these nonlocalities. The spatio-temporal frequency spectra of linear waves are also determined.

Statics and dynamics solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates

A. Benseghir, Bakhram Umarov, Bakhtiyor B. Baizakov +4 more

Static and dynamic properties of matter-wave solitons in dense Bose-Einstein condensates, where three-body interactions play a significant role, have been studied by a variational approximation (VA) and numerical simulations. For experimentally relevant parameters, matter-wave solitons may acquire a flat-top shape, which suggests employing a superGaussian trial function for VA. Comparison of the soliton profiles, predicted by VA and those found from numerical solution of the governing Gross-Pitaevskii equation shows good agreement, thereby validating the proposed approach.

Equilibrium and scattering properties of a nonlocal three-soliton molecule in Bose–Einstein condensates with competing nonlinearities

Khelifa Mohammed Elhadj, Abdelâali Boudjemâa

Abstract We carry out numerical and variational investigation of equilibrium and scattering properties of a bright three-soliton molecule in Bose–Einstein condensates with competing local and nonlocal nonlinearities in one-dimensional geometry. Our model predicts that the degree of the nonlocality and the soliton phase may strongly affect the binding energy and the soliton width. We show that the interaction of three solitons depends on their separation distance and on their relative phase. The scattering properties of these composite nonlinear structures by Gaussian potential barrier are analyzed variationally and numerically. It is found that stable transmission and reflection where the molecular structure is preserved can occur only for a specific barrier height and soliton velocity.

Three-dimensional solitons in coupled atomic-molecular Bose-Einstein condensates

Timothy G. Vaughan, Karen V. Kheruntsyan, P. D. Drummond

We present a theoretical analysis of three-dimensional (3D) matter-wave solitons and their stability properties in coupled atomic and molecular Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). The soliton solutions to the mean-field equations are obtained in an approximate analytical form by means of a variational approach. We investigate soliton stability within the parameter space described by the atom-molecule conversion coupling, the atom-atom $s$-wave scattering, and the bare formation energy of the molecular species. In terms of ordinary optics, this is analogous to the process of sub- or second-harmonic generation in a quadratic nonlinear medium modified by a cubic nonlinearity, together with a phase mismatch term between the fields. While the possibility of formation of multidimensional spatiotemporal solitons in pure quadratic media has been theoretically demonstrated previously, here we extend this prediction to matter-wave interactions in BEC systems where higher-order nonlinear processes due to interparticle collisions are unavoidable and may not be neglected. The stability of the solitons predicted for repulsive atom-atom interactions is investigated by direct numerical simulations of the equations of motion in a full 3D lattice. Our analysis also leads to a possible technique for demonstrating the ground state of the Schr\"odinger-Newton and related equations that describe Bose-Einstein condensates with nonlocal interparticle forces.
