Abstract

Polarized inelastic neutron scattering experiments recently identified the amplitude (Higgs) mode in C_{9}H_{18}N_{2}CuBr_{4}, a two-dimensional near-quantum-critical spin-1/2 two-leg ladder compound, which exhibits a weak easy-axis exchange anisotropy. Here, we theoretically examine the dynamic spin structure factor of such planar coupled spin-ladder systems using large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations. This allows us to provide a quantitative account of the experimental neutron scattering data within a consistent quantum spin model. Moreover, we trace the details of the continuous evolution of the amplitude mode from a two-particle bound state of coupled ladders in the classical Ising limit all the way to the quantum spin-1/2 Heisenberg limit with fully restored SU(2) symmetry, where it gets overdamped by the two-magnon continuum in neutron scattering.

z=2 Quantum Critical Dynamics in a Spin Ladder

D. Blosser, Vivek Kumar Bhartiya, David J. Voneshen +1 more

By means of inelastic neutron scattering we investigate finite temperature dynamics in the quantum spin ladder compound (C_{5}H_{12}N)_{2}CuBr_{4} (BPCB) near the magnetic field induced quantum critical point with dynamical exponent z=2. We observe universal finite-temperature scaling of the transverse local dynamic structure factor in spectacular quantitative agreement with long-standing theoretical predictions. At the same time, already at rather low temperatures, we observe strong nonuniversal longitudinal fluctuations. To separate the two, we make use of an intrinsic leg-exchange symmetry of the spin ladder. Complementary measurements of specific heat also reveal striking scaling behavior near the quantum critical point.

Magnetic-Field-Induced Bound States in Spin- 1 2 Ladders

Mithilesh Nayak, D. Blosser, A. Zheludev +1 more

Motivated by the recently observed intriguing mode splittings in a magnetic field with inelastic neutron scattering in the spin ladder compound (C_{5}H_{12}N)_{2}CuBr_{4} (BPCB), we investigate the nature of the spin ladder excitations using a density matrix renormalization group and analytical arguments. Starting from the fully frustrated ladder, for which we derive the low-energy spectrum, we show that bound states are generically present close to k=0 in the dynamical structure factor of spin ladders above H_{c1}, and that they are characterized by a field-independent binding energy and an intensity that grows with H-H_{c1}. These predictions are shown to explain quantitatively the split modes observed in BPCB.

Statics and dynamics of weakly coupled antiferromagnetic spin- 1 2 ladders in a magnetic field

Pierre Bouillot, Corinna Kollath, Andreas Martin Läuchli +9 more

We investigate weakly coupled spin-$1/2$ ladders in a magnetic field. The work is motivated by recent experiments on the compound ${(}_{\mathrm{C}}{\mathrm{H}}_{12}{\mathrm{N}}_{)}{\mathrm{CuBr}}_{4}$ (BPCB). We use a combination of numerical and analytical methods, in particular, the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique, to explore the phase diagram and the excitation spectra of such a system. We give detailed results on the temperature dependence of the magnetization and the specific heat, and the magnetic-field dependence of the nuclear-magnetic-resonance relaxation rate of single ladders. For coupled ladders, treating the weak interladder coupling within a mean-field or quantum Monte Carlo approach, we compute the transition temperature of triplet condensation and its corresponding antiferromagnetic order parameter. Existing experimental measurements are discussed and compared to our theoretical results. Furthermore, we compute, using time-dependent DMRG, the dynamical correlations of a single spin ladder. Our results allow to describe directly the inelastic neutron scattering cross section up to high energies. We focus on the evolution of the spectra with the magnetic field and compare their behavior for different couplings. The characteristic features of the spectra are interpreted using different analytical approaches such as the mapping onto a spin chain, a Luttinger liquid or onto a $t$-$J$ model. For values of parameters for which such measurements exist, we compare our results to inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the compound BPCB and find excellent agreement. We make additional predictions for the high-energy part of the spectrum that are potentially testable in future experiments.

Spin dynamics of coupled spin ladders near quantum criticality in Ba 2 CuTeO 6

David Macdougal, Alexandra S. Gibbs, Tao Ying +6 more

We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the magnetic excitations in ${\mathrm{Ba}}_{2}{\mathrm{CuTeO}}_{6}$, proposed by ab initio calculations to magnetically realize weakly coupled antiferromagnetic two-leg spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ ladders. Isolated ladders are expected to have a singlet ground state protected by a spin gap. ${\mathrm{Ba}}_{2}{\mathrm{CuTeO}}_{6}$ orders magnetically, but with a small N\'eel temperature relative to the exchange strength, suggesting that the interladder couplings are relatively small and only just able to stabilize magnetic order, placing ${\mathrm{Ba}}_{2}{\mathrm{CuTeO}}_{6}$ close in parameter space to the critical point separating the gapped phase and N\'eel order. Through comparison of the observed spin dynamics with linear spin wave theory and quantum Monte Carlo calculations, we propose values for all relevant intra- and interladder exchange parameters, which place the system on the ordered side of the phase diagram in proximity to the critical point. We also compare high field magnetization data with quantum Monte Carlo predictions for the proposed model of coupled ladders.

Spin dynamics of quantum spin-ladders and chains

The excitation spectrum of the doped ladder in Caâ .â Srâ â .â Cuâ â Oâ â can be \ndescribed by a direct comparison with the undoped ladder and the differences consisting \nof a higher energy mode and subgap scattering can be successfully modeled by the charge spectrum of the ladder calculated from the free electron model. The second part of the thesis investigates the alternating chain material Cu(NOâ )â · 2.5D2O and establishes the gapped one-magnon dispersion, the two-magnon continuum and for the first time the S =1 bound mode. Applying magnetic field drives the system through two critical field transitions, condensation of magnons into the ground state and saturation. The modes beyond saturation can be modeled by spin wave theory and the excitations at the first critical field follow Luttinger Liquid behavior. Additionally investigated are the temperature effects with the excitations being of a different nature but containing the signature of a strong correlated system. For an outlook the measurements including temperature and field are provided with further theoretical descriptions necessary.

Spin Excitation Spectra of Anisotropic Spin- 1/2 Triangular Lattice Heisenberg Antiferromagnets

Runze Chi, Yang Liu, Yuan Wan +2 more

Investigation of dynamical excitations is difficult but crucial to the understanding of many exotic quantum phenomena discovered in quantum materials. This is particularly true for highly frustrated quantum antiferromagnets whose dynamical properties deviate strongly from theoretical predictions made based on the spin-wave or other approximations. Here, we present a large-scale numerical calculation on the dynamical correlation functions of spin-1/2 triangular Heisenberg model using a state-of-the-art tensor network renormalization group method. The calculated results allow us to gain for the first time a comprehensive picture on the nature of spin excitation spectra in this highly frustrated quantum system. It provides a quantitative account for all the key features of the dynamical spectra disclosed by inelastic neutron scattering measurements for Ba_{3}CoSb_{2}O_{9}, revealing the importance of the interplay between low- and high-energy excitations and its renormalization effect to the low-energy magnon bands and high-energy continuums. We identify the longitudinal Higgs modes in the intermediate-energy scale and predict the energy and momentum dependence of spectral functions along the three principal axes that can be verified by polarized neutron scattering experiments. Furthermore, we find that the spin excitation spectra weakly depend on the anisotropic ratio of the antiferromagnetic interaction.
