Polarization in a three-dimensional Fermi gas with Rabi coupling

Abstract

Abstract We investigate the polarization of a two-component three-dimensional fermionic gas made of repulsive alkali-metal atoms. The two pseudo-spin components correspond to two hyperfine states which are Rabi coupled. The presence of Rabi coupling implies that only the total number of atoms is conserved and a quantum phase transition between states dominated by spin-polarization along different axses is possible. By using a variational Hartree–Fock scheme we calculate analytically the ground-state energy of the system and determine analytically and numerically the conditions under which there is this quantum phase transition. This scheme includes the well-known criterion for the Stoner instability. The obtained phase diagram clearly shows that the polarized phase crucially depends on the interplay among the Rabi coupling energy, the interaction energy per particle, and the kinetic energy per particle.

Itinerant ferromagnetism of two-dimensional repulsive fermions with Rabi coupling

Vittorio Penna, Luca Salasnich

We study a two-dimensional fermionic cloud of repulsive alkali-metal atoms characterized by two hyperfine states which are Rabi coupled. Within a variational Hartree–Fock scheme, we calculate analytically the ground-state energy of the system. Then we determine the conditions under which there is a quantum phase transition with spontaneous symmetry breaking from a spin-balanced configuration to a spin-polarized one, an effect known as itinerant ferromagnetism. Interestingly, we find that the transition appears when the interaction energy per particle exceedes both the kinetic energy per particle and the Rabi coupling energy. The itinerant ferromagnetism of the polarized phase is analyzed, obtaining the population imbalance as a function of interaction strength, Rabi coupling, and number density. Finally, the inclusion of a external harmonic confinement is investigated by adopting the local density approximation. We predict that a single atomic cloud can display population imbalance near the center of the trap and a fully balanced configuration at the periphery.

Polarization of a quasi-two-dimensional repulsive Fermi gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling: A variational study

Alberto Ambrosetti, Giovanni Lombardi, Luca Salasnich +2 more

Motivated by the remarkable experimental control of synthetic gauge fields in ultracold atomic systems, we investigate the effect of an artificial Rashba spin-orbit coupling on the spin polarization of a two-dimensional repulsive Fermi gas. By using a variational many-body wave function, based on a suitable spinorial structure, we find that the polarization properties of the system are indeed controlled by the interplay between spin-orbit coupling and repulsive interaction. In particular, two main effects are found: (1) The Rashba coupling determines a gradual increase of the degree of polarization beyond the critical repulsive interaction strength, at variance with conventional two-dimensional Stoner instability. (2) The critical interaction strength, above which finite polarization is developed, shows a dependence on the Rashba coupling, i.e., it is enhanced in case the Rashba coupling exceeds a critical value. A simple analytic expression for the critical interaction strength is further derived in the context of our variational formulation, which allows for a straightforward and insightful analysis of the present problem.

Phase transitions of repulsive two-component Fermi gases in two dimensions

Martin-Isbjörn Trappe, Piotr T. Grochowski, Jun Hao Hue +2 more

We predict the phase separations of two-dimensional Fermi gases with repulsive contact-type interactions between two spin components. Using density-potential functional theory with systematic semiclassical approximations, we address the long-standing problem of itinerant ferromagnetism in realistic settings. We reveal a universal transition from the paramagnetic state at small repulsive interactions toward ferromagnetic density profiles at large interaction strengths, with intricate particle-number dependent phases in between. Building on quantum Monte Carlo results for uniform systems, we benchmark our simulations against Hartree–Fock calculations for a small number of trapped fermions. We thereby demonstrate that our employed corrections to the bare contact interaction energy and especially to the Thomas–Fermi kinetic energy functional are necessary for reliably predicting properties of trapped mesoscopic Fermi gases. The density patterns of the ground state survive at low finite temperatures and confirm the Stoner-type polarization behavior across a universal interaction parameter, albeit with substantial quantitative differences that originate in the trapping potential and the quantum-corrected kinetic energy. We also uncover a plethora of metastable configurations that are energetically comparable to the ground-state density profiles and are thus likely to be observed in experiments. We argue that our density-functional approach can be easily applied to interacting multi-component Fermi gases in general.

Repulsive atomic Fermi gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling: A quantum Monte Carlo study

Alberto Ambrosetti, Pier Luigi Silvestrelli, Francesco Pederiva +2 more

Thanks to the recent experimental realization and control of artificial gauge fields, spin-orbit (SO) couplings are witnessing an ever increasing interest in the field of cold atoms. However, predicting their effect on spin polarization and energetic properties of interacting systems is a major challenge, due to the complex interplay between spin and position dynamics. In this work we exploit the diffusion Monte Carlo algorithm to compute energetic and polarization properties of a three-dimensional repulsive Fermi gas in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We find that SO effects tend to contrast the spin alignment induced by the exchange interaction, slightly shifting the onset of the Stoner instability towards larger values of the scattering length. In addition, polarization and energy properties of the system can be tuned trough a combined control of the repulsive interaction and Rashba coupling.

Tunable zero and first sounds in ultracold Fermi gases with Rabi coupling

Luca Lepori, Luca Salasnich

Abstract We consider a weakly-interacting fermionic gas of alkali-metal atoms characterized by two hyperfine states which are Rabi coupled. By using a Born approximation for the repulsive interaction we determine the zero-temperature equation of state of this Fermi gas in D spatial dimensions ( D = 1, 2, 3). Then, adopting the Landau–Vlasov equation and hydrodynamic equtions, we investigate the speed of first sound and zero sound. We show that the two sounds, which occur respectively in collisional and collisionless regimes, crucially depend on the interplay between interaction strength and Rabi coupling. Finally, we discuss for some experimentally relevant cases the effect of a trapping harmonic potential on the density profles of the fermionic system.

Spotlighting phase separation in Rashba spin-orbit coupled Bose–Einstein condensates in two dimensions

S. Bhuvaneswari, K. Nithyanandan, Paulsamy Muruganandam

We study the system of spin-orbit (SO) coupled Bose–Einstein condensates (BEC) with Rabi coupling in quasi-two dimensions characterized by unequal Rashba and Dresselhaus couplings. The ground state properties and the phase diagram of the system are studied within the mean-field approximation at T = 0. The energy-momentum dispersion relation corresponding to the single-particle ground state exhibits an infinitely degenerate Rashba ring, whose degeneracy is destroyed by the Rabi coupling, leading to a single-point lowest energy. The effect of Rabi coupling and interaction in the system show up three different phases, namely stripe, plane wave and zero momentum phase. At a particular parametric condition, the system admits a critical point separating all three different phases, known as the tri-critical point. For further insight, the momentum distribution, the energy and the longitudinal/transverse spin polarization corresponding to the quantum phases are comprehensively discussed.
