Abstract

The charge carrier dynamics of doped electronic correlated systems on ladders and chains, subject to ultrafast photoirradiation, is investigated using the time-dependent Lanczos method. The time-resolved optical conductivity and the temporal profiles of other relevant quantities, including the doublon number, the kinetic energy, and the interaction energy, are calculated. Two competitive factors that can influence the transient charge carrier dynamics are identified as the thermal effect and the charge effect. We demonstrate that the analysis of their interplay can provide an intuitive way to understand the numerical results and the recent optical pump-probe experiment on a two-leg ladder cuprate.

Photoinduced correlated electron dynamics in a two-leg ladder Hubbard system

Hiroshi Hashimoto, Sumio Ishihara

Photoinduced carrier dynamics in a correlated electron system on a coupled two-leg ladder lattice are studied. The two-leg ladder Hubbard model is analyzed utilizing the exact diagonalization method based on the Lanczos algorithm in finite-size clusters. In order to reveal the transient carrier dynamics after photoirradiation, we calculate the low-energy components of the hole kinetic energy, the pair-field correlation function, the optical conductivity spectra, and other characteristics. It is shown that the photoinduced metallic-like state appears in a half-filled Mott insulating state, while the low-energy carrier motion is suppressed by photoirradiation in the case of hole-doped metallic states. These photoinduced changes in the electron dynamics are associated with changes in the carrier-pair coherence; they are not attributed to a naive thermalization, and are associated with a ladder-lattice effect instead. Based on the numerical results, optical control of hole pairs using double-pulse pumping is demonstrated. Implications for recent optical pump-probe experiments are presented.

Photoinduced dynamics in the one-dimensional two-orbital degenerate Hubbard model

Nobuya Maeshima, Kenji Yonemitsu, Ken-ichi Hino

We study photoinduced dynamical properties of the one-dimensional two-orbital degenerate Hubbard model. By using the Lanczos diagonalization method, we calculate optical conductivity spectra of the lowest photoexcited state. The optical conductivity has the Drude-like low-energy component caused by photogenerated carriers, a holon and a triplet doublon. We have also found an additional low-energy component in the spectra, which demonstrates a transition from the triplet doublon to singlet doublons.

Anomalous suppression of photoinduced in-gap weight in the optical conductivity of a two-leg Hubbard ladder

Takami Tohyama, Kazuya Shinjo, Shigetoshi Sota +1 more

Photoinduced nonequilibrium states in the Mott insulators reflect the fundamental nature of competition between itinerancy and localization of the charge degrees of freedom. The spin degrees of freedom will also contribute to the competition in a different manner depending on lattice geometry. We investigate pulse-excited optical responses of a half-filled two-leg Hubbard ladder and compare them with those of a one-dimensional extended Hubbard chain. Calculating the time-dependent optical conductivity, we find that strong monocycle pulse inducing quantum tunneling gives rise to anomalous suppression of photo-induced in-gap weight, leading to negative weight. This is in contrast to finite positive weight in the Hubbard chain. The origin of this anomalous behavior in the two-leg ladder is attributed to photoinduced localized exciton that reflects strong spin-singlet dimer correlation in the ground state.

Photoexcitation of the one-dimensional extended Peierls–Hubbard model at quarter-filling

Yupeng Li, Yu-Chang 羽畅 Liu 刘, Yu-Zhuo 玉卓 Zhao 赵 +2 more

Abstract Utilizing the time-dependent Lanczos method, we investigate the photoexcitation dynamics of the one-dimensional (1D) extended Peierls–Hubbard model at quarter filling. In equilibrium, it is well established that introducing the nearest-neighbour interaction V into the 1D Peierls–Hubbard model can lead to the formation of Mott–Hubbard excitons, which exhibit a characteristic frequency in the optical conductivity that is lower than the Mott gap. Ultrafast photoexcitation of this model gives rise to a transient metallic state for V < 2, characterized by several features, including a zero-frequency Drude peak in the post-pump optical conductivity, an increase in the density of charge carriers, and enhanced electron hopping between dimers. In contrast, when V ≥ 2, this metallic state is no longer observed, as photoinduced carriers bind to form excitons, thereby inhibiting metallic behavior. These results highlight a parallel between the optical excitation of the 1D extended Peierls–Hubbard model at quarter filling and that of the 1D extended Hubbard model at half filling, suggesting a universal mechanism governing their photoinduced responses.

Multi-Triplon Excitations of Hubbard Ladders with Site-Dependent Potentials

Nobuya Maeshima, Ken-ichi Hino

We study low-lying spin-singlet excitations of two-leg Hubbard ladders with site-dependent potentials. Using general formulas of the charge disproportionation induced by the site-dependent potentials, we derive the contributions of spin degrees of freedom to the spectral functions such as the dynamical charge structure factor $N(\boldsymbol{k},ω)$ and the optical conductivity $σ_γ(ω)$ along the $γ(=x,y)$-direction of the two-leg ladders. Numerical results obtained by the Lanczos diagonalization method have clarified that the multi-triplon singlet states, including two- and three-triplon excitations, can be detected by observing these quantities. Furthermore, we have found that ladders with random potentials also have non-negligible contributions of these excitations to $σ_x(ω)$.

Dynamical correlations and nonequilibrium sum rules in photodoped Hubbard ladders

E. Merhej, J. P. Hague, Robert Konik +1 more

Using matrix product state techniques we study the nonequilibrium dynamical response of the half-filled Hubbard ladder when subject to an optical pump. Optical pumping offers a way of producing and manipulating new strongly correlated phenomena by suppressing existing magnetic correlations. The ladder allows the effects of pump directionality to be investigated, and compared to a single chain it has strong spin-charge coupling and a fully gapped excitation spectrum, promising different nonequilibrium physics. We compute time-dependent correlations, including the nonequilibrium dynamical structure factors for spin and charge. By deriving a combined spin-charge sum rule that applies both in and out-of-equilibrium, we show that spectral weight is pumped directly from the antiferromagnetic spin response into a low energy ω ∼ 0 charge response below the Mott gap. The transfer of weight is pump direction dependent: pumping directed along the legs disrupts magnetic correlations more than pumping in the rung-direction, even if the post-pump energy density is similar. The charge correlation length is dramatically enhanced by the pump, whilst the spin correlations are most strongly suppressed at nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor spacings. After the pump the system is in a nonthermal correlated metallic state, with gapless charge excitations and approximately equal spin and charge correlation lengths, emphasizing the importance of treating these degrees of freedom on an equal footing in nonequilibrium systems.
