Properties of collective Rabi oscillations with two Rydberg atoms

Abstract

Motivated by experimental advances that the collective excitation of two Rydberg atoms was observed, we provide an elaborate theoretical study for the dynamical behavior of two-atom Rabi oscillations. In the large-intermediate-detuning case, the two-photon Rabi oscillation is found to be significantly affected by the strength of the interatomic van der Waals interaction. With a careful comparison of the exact numbers and values of the oscillation frequency, we propose a new way to determine the strength of excitation blockade, agreeing well with the previous universal criterion for full, partial, and no blockade regions. In the small-intermediate-detuning case, we find a blockade-like effect, but the collective enhancement factor is smaller than 2 due to the quantum interference of double optical transitions involving the intermediate state. Moreover, a fast two-photon Rabi oscillation in ns timescale is manifested by employing intense lasers with an intensity of ∼ MW/cm 2 , offering a possibility of ultrafast control of quantum dynamics with Rydberg atoms.

Rabi oscillations between ground and Rydberg states and van der Waals blockade in a mesoscopic frozen Rydberg gas

M Reetz-Lamour, Johannes Deiglmayr, T Amthor +1 more

We present a detailed analysis of our recent observation of synchronous Rabi oscillations between the electronic ground state and Rydberg states in a mesoscopic ensemble containing roughly 100 ultracold atoms (Reetz-Lamour et al submitted, Preprint 0711.4321). The mesoscopic cloud is selected out of a sample of laser-cooled Rb atoms by optical pumping. The atoms are coupled to a Rydberg state with principal quantum number around 30 by a two-photon scheme employing flat-top laser beams. The influence of residual spatial intensity fluctuations as well as sources of decoherence such as redistribution to other states, radiative lifetime and laser bandwidth are analysed. The results open up new possibilities for the investigation of coherent many-body phenomena in dipolar Rydberg gases. As an example we demonstrate the van der Waals blockade, a variant of the dipole blockade, for a mesoscopic atom sample.

Evidence for Coherent Collective Rydberg Excitation in the Strong Blockade Regime

Rolf Heidemann, Ulrich Krohn, Vera Bendkowsky +4 more

We report on strong van der Waals blockade in two-photon Rydberg excitation of ultracold magnetically trapped 87Rb atoms. The excitation dynamics was investigated for a large range of densities and laser intensities and shows a full saturation and a strong suppression with respect to single-atom behavior. The observed scaling of the initial increase with density and laser intensity provides evidence for coherent collective excitation. This coherent collective behavior, that was observed for up to several thousand atoms per blockade volume, is generic for all mesoscopic systems which are able to carry only one single quantum of excitation.

Direct Measurement of the van der Waals Interaction between Two Rydberg Atoms

Lucas Béguin, Aline Vernier, Radu Chicireanu +2 more

We report the direct measurement of the van der Waals interaction between two isolated, single Rydberg atoms separated by a controlled distance of a few micrometers. Working in a regime where the single-atom Rabi frequency for excitation to the Rydberg state is comparable to the interaction, we observe partial Rydberg blockade, whereby the time-dependent populations of the various two-atom states exhibit coherent oscillations with several frequencies. Quantitative comparison of the data with a simple model based on the optical Bloch equations allows us to extract the van der Waals energy, and observe its characteristic C6/R6 dependence. The measured C6 coefficients agree well with ab initio calculations, and we observe their dramatic increase with the principal quantum number n of the Rydberg state.

Generation of doubly excited Rydberg states based on Rydberg antiblockade in a cold atomic ensemble

Jacob Taylor, Josiah Sinclair, Kent Bonsma-Fisher +3 more

Interaction between Rydberg atoms can significantly modify Rydberg excitation dynamics. Under a resonant driving field the Rydberg-Rydberg interaction in high-lying states can induce shifts in the atomic resonance such that a secondary Rydberg excitation becomes unlikely leading to the Rydberg blockade effect. In a related effect, off-resonant coupling of light to Rydberg states of atoms contributes to the Rydberg anti-blockade effect where the Rydberg interaction creates a resonant condition that promotes a secondary excitation in a Rydberg atomic gas. Here, we study the light-matter interaction and dynamics of off-resonant two-photon excitations and include two- and three-atom Rydberg interactions and their effect on excited state dynamics in an ensemble of cold atoms. In an experimentally-motivated regime, we find the optimal physical parameters such as Rabi frequencies, two-photon detuning, and pump duration to achieve significant enhancement in the probability of generating doubly-excited collective atomic states. This results in large auto-correlation values due to the Rydberg anti-blockade effect and makes this system a potential candidate for a high-purity two-photon Fock state source.

Förster Blockade and Excitation Transfer Behaviors of Two-Photon Rabi Oscillations of Exciton–Biexciton Levels in Coupled Quantum Dots

Ameenah N. Al‐Ahmadi

We provide a theoretical study for the dynamical behavior of two-photon Rabi oscillations in two coupled quantum dots. Each dot is a three-level quantum system (ground, one-exciton, and biexciton states). We describe the optical dynamics within the density matrix formalism framework. The two-photon Rabi oscillations are found to be significantly affected by the strength of the interdot dipolar interaction. Using a detuned laser pulse with an exciton state of the driven quantum dot in our numerical simulations, a direct coherent excitation between the biexciton states can be established, but whether Rabi oscillations can be observed depend mainly on the strength of the dipolar interaction and bandwidth of the excitation laser. When the strength of the dipolar coupling is less than the excitation laser bandwidth, the time-dependent populations of the various two biexciton states of the system exhibit coherent oscillations with several frequencies. However, as we increase the dipolar coupling strength, the population transfer between the quantum dots levels amazingly becomes forbidden, and the excitation gets trapped at the initial state. The reduction of the influence of the dipolar interaction leads to a manipulation of two-photon Rabi oscillation in an ultrashort timescale (∼ps), opening possibilities to achieve ultrafast quantum state control and quantum logic gate generation.
