Abstract

In this work we analyze the effect of a bath of spins interacting with a quantum Ising model in terms of a hierarchy of correlations. We show that this formalism can be used with general spin systems and baths, and discuss the concrete case of a transverse Ising model coupled to a bath. We show how mean field results change when correlations are added and the properties of the quasiparticle excitations in terms of the density of states and self-energy.

Thermodynamics of a quantum Ising system coupled to a spin bath

R. D. McKenzie, Philip C. E. Stamp

We study the effect of coupling a spin-bath environment to a system which, at low energies, can be modeled as a quantum Ising system. A field theoretic formalism incorporating both thermal and quantum fluctuations is developed to derive results for the thermodynamic properties and response functions, both for a toy model and for the ${\text{LiHoF}}_{4}$ system, in which spin-8 electronic spins couple to a spin-$7/2$ nuclear spin bath: The phase transition then occurs in a system of electronuclear degrees of freedom, coupled by long-range dipolar interactions. The quantum Ising phase transition still exists, and one hybridized mode of the Ising and bath spins always goes soft at the transition.

Model study of dissipation in quantum phase transitions

Subhasis Sinha, Sushanta Dattagupta

We consider a prototypical system of an infinite range transverse field Ising model coupled to a bosonic bath. By integrating out the bosonic degrees, an effective anisotropic Heisenberg model is obtained for the spin system. The phase diagram of the latter is calculated as a function of coupling to the heat bath and the transverse magnetic field. Collective excitations at low temeratures are assessed within a spin-wave like analysis that exhibits a vanishing energy gap at the quantum critical point. We also consider another limit where the system reduces to a generalized spin-boson model of two interacting spins. By increasing the coupling strength with the heat bath, the two-spin wavefunction changes from an entangled state to a factorized state of two spins which are aligned along the transverse field. We also discuss the possible realization and application of the model to different physical systems.

Hierarchy of correlations for the Ising model in the Majorana representation

Álvaro Gómez-León

We study the quantum Ising model in $D$ dimensions with the equation-of-motion technique and the Majorana representation for spins. The decoupling scheme used for the Green's functions is based on the hierarchy of correlations in position space. To lowest order, this method reproduces the well-known mean field phase diagram and critical exponents. When correlations between spins are included, we show how the appearance of thermal fluctuations and magnons strongly affects the physical properties. In one dimension and for $B=0$ we demonstrate that, to first order in correlations, thermal fluctuations completely destroy the ordered phase. For nonvanishing transverse field we show that the model exhibits different behavior than its classical counterpart, especially near the quantum critical point. We discuss the connection with the Dyson's equation formalism and the explicit form of the self-energies.

Fluctuations and phase transitions in quantum Ising systems

R. H. McKenzie

The quantum Ising model is perhaps the simplest possible model of a quantum magnetic material. Despite its simplicity, its versatility and wide range of applications, from quantum computation, to combinatorial optimization, to biophysics, make it one of the most important models of modern physics. In this thesis, we develop a general framework for studying quantum Ising systems with an arbitrary single ion Hamiltonian, with emphasis on the effects of quantum fluctuations, and the quantum phase transition between paramagnetic and ferromagnetic states that occurs when a magnetic field is applied transverse to the easy axis of the system. The magnetic insulating crystal LiHoF₄ is a physical realization of the quantum Ising model, with the additional features that the dominant coupling between spins is the long range dipolar interaction, and each electronic spin is strongly coupled to a nuclear degree of freedom. These nuclear degrees of freedom constitute a spin bath environment acting on the system. In this thesis, we present an effective low temperature Hamiltonian for LiHoF₄ that incorporates both these features, and we analyze the effects of the nuclear spin bath on the system. We find the lowest energy crystal field excitation in the system is gapped at the quantum critical point by the presence of the nuclear spins, with spectral weight being transferred down to a lower energy electronuclear mode that fully softens to zero at the quantum critical point. Furthermore, we present a toy model, the spin half spin half model, that illustrates the effects of an anisotropic hyperfine interaction on a quantum Ising system. We find the critical transverse field is increased when the longitudinal hyperfine coupling is dominant, as well as an enhancement of both the longitudinal electronic susceptibility and an applied longitudinal field. In addition, we present a field theoretic formalism for incorporating the effects of fluctuations beyond the random phase approximation in general quantum Ising systems. We find that any regular on site interaction, such as a nuclear spin bath, does not fundamentally alter the critical properties of a quantum Ising system. This formalism is used to calculate corrections to the magnetization of LiHoF₄.

Aspects of the decoherence in high-spin environments: Breakdown of the mean-field approximation

Yamen Hamdouni

The study of the decoherence of qubits in spin systems is almost restricted to environments whose constituents are spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ particles. In this paper we consider environments that are composed of particles of higher spin, and we investigate the consequences on the dynamics of a qubit coupled to such baths via Heisenberg $XY$ and Ising interactions. It is shown that, while the short time decay in both cases gets faster as the magnitude of the spin increases, the asymptotic behavior exhibits an improvement of the suppression of the decoherence when the coupling is through Heisenberg $XY$ interactions. In the case of a transverse Ising model, we find that the mean-field approximation breaks down for high values of the spin.

DECOHERENCE OF A QUANTUM MEMORY COUPLED TO A COLLECTIVE SPIN BATH

RICHARD WALTERS, STEPHEN R. CLARK, DIETER JAKSCH

We study the quantum dynamics of a single qubit coupled to a bath of interacting spins as a model for decoherence in solid state quantum memories. The spin bath is described by the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model and the bath spins are subjected to a transverse magnetic field. We investigate the qubit interacting via either an Ising- or an XY-type coupling term to subsets of bath spins of differing size. The large degree of symmetry of the bath allows us to find parameter regimes where the initial qubit state is revived at well-defined times after the qubit preparation. These times may become independent of the bath size for large baths and thus enable faithful qubit storage even in the presence of strong coupling to a bath. We analyze a large range of parameters and identify those which are best suited for quantum memories. In general we find that a small number of links between qubit and bath spins leads to less decoherence and that systems with Ising coupling between qubit and bath spins are preferable.
