Abstract

Abstract We present a new exact renormalization approach for quantum lattice models leading to long-range interactions. The renormalization scheme is based on wavelets with an infinite support in such a way that the excitation spectrum at the fixed point coincides with the spectrum of the associated short-range continuum model in an energy range below an upper cutoff imposed by the lattice spacing. As a consequence, the conformal towers of spectrum are exactly realized on the lattice up to a certain energy scale. We exemplify our approach by applying it to free bosons and to free fermions in 1 + 1 dimensions, as well as to the Ising model. The analysis is also motivated by tensor network approaches to the AdS/CFT correspondence since our results may be useful for a qualitatively new construction of holographic duals complementary to previous approaches based on finite-range wavelets.

Holographic Construction of Quantum Field Theory using Wavelets

Sukhwinder Singh, Gavin K. Brennen

Wavelets encode data at multiple resolutions, which in a wavelet description of a quantum field theory, allows for fields to carry, in addition to space-time coordinates, an extra dimension: scale. A recently introduced Exact Holographic Mapping [C.H. Lee and X.-L. Qi, Phys. Rev. B 93, 035112 (2016)] uses the Haar wavelet basis to represent the free Dirac fermionic quantum field theory (QFT) at multiple renormalization scales thereby inducing an emergent bulk geometry in one higher dimension. This construction is, in fact, generic and we show how higher families of Daubechies wavelet transforms of 1+1 dimensional scalar bosonic QFT generate a bulk description with a variable rate of renormalization flow. In the massless case, where the boundary is described by conformal field theory, the bulk correlations decay with distance consistent with an Anti-de-Sitter space (AdS3) metric whose radius of curvature depends on the wavelet family used. We propose an experimental demonstration of the bulk/boundary correspondence via a digital quantum simulation using Gaussian operations on a set of quantum harmonic oscillator modes.

Continuous tensor network renormalization for quantum fields

Qi Ping Hu, Adrián Franco-Rubio, Guifré Vidal

On the lattice, a renormalization group (RG) flow for two-dimensional partition functions expressed as a tensor network can be obtained using the tensor network renormalization (TNR) algorithm [G. Evenbly, G. Vidal, Phys. Rev. Lett. 115 (18), 180405 (2015)]. In this work we explain how to extend TNR to field theories in the continuum. First, a short-distance length scale $1/Λ$ is introduced in the continuum partition function by smearing the fields. The resulting object is still defined in the continuum but has no fluctuations at distances shorter than $1/Λ$. An infinitesimal coarse-graining step is then generated by the combined action of a $rescaling$ operator $L$ and a $disentangling$ operator $K$ that implements a quasi-local field redefinition. As demonstrated for a free boson in two dimensions, continuous TNR exactly preserves translation and rotation symmetries and can generate a proper RG flow. Moreover, from a critical fixed point of this RG flow one can then extract the conformal data of the underlying conformal field theory.

Tensor network models of AdS/qCFT

A. Jahn, Zoltán Zimborás, Jens Eisert

The study of critical quantum many-body systems through conformal field theory (CFT) is one of the pillars of modern quantum physics. Certain CFTs are also understood to be dual to higher-dimensional theories of gravity via the anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence. To reproduce various features of AdS/CFT, a large number of discrete models based on tensor networks have been proposed. Some recent models, most notably including toy models of holographic quantum error correction, are constructed on regular time-slice discretizations of AdS. In this work, we show that the symmetries of these models are well suited for approximating CFT states, as their geometry enforces a discrete subgroup of conformal symmetries. Based on these symmetries, we introduce the notion of a quasiperiodic conformal field theory (qCFT), a critical theory less restrictive than a full CFT and with characteristic multi-scale quasiperiodicity. We discuss holographic code states and their renormalization group flow as specific implementations of a qCFT with fractional central charges and argue that their behavior generalizes to a large class of existing and future models. Beyond approximating CFT properties, we show that these can be best understood as belonging to a paradigm of discrete holography.

Emergent Holographic Forces from Tensor Networks and Criticality

Rahul Sahay, Mikhail D. Lukin, Jordan S. Cotler

The AdS/CFT correspondence stipulates a duality between conformal field theories and certain theories of quantum gravity in one higher spatial dimension. However, probing this conjecture on contemporary classical or quantum computers is challenging. We formulate an efficiently implementable multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz model of AdS/CFT, providing a mapping between a ( 1 + 1 )-dimensional critical spin system and a ( 2 + 1 )-dimensional bulk theory. Using a combination of numerics and analytics, we show that the bulk theory arising from this optimized tensor network furnishes excitations with attractive interactions. Remarkably, these excitations have one- and two-particle energies matching the predictions for matter coupled to AdS gravity at long distances, thus displaying key features of AdS physics. We show that these potentials arise as a direct consequence of entanglement renormalization and discuss how this approach can be used to efficiently simulate bulk dynamics using realistic quantum devices.

Unitary networks from the exact renormalization of wave functionals

Jackson R. Fliss, Robert G. Leigh, Onkar Parrikar

The exact renormalization group (ERG) for $O(N)$ vector models (at large $N$) on flat Euclidean space can be interpreted as the bulk dynamics corresponding to a holographically dual higher spin gauge theory on ${\mathrm{AdS}}_{d+1}$. This was established in the sense that at large $N$ the generating functional of correlation functions of single-trace operators is reproduced by the on-shell action of the bulk higher spin theory, which is most simply presented in a first-order (phase space) formalism. In this paper, we extend the ERG formalism to the wave functionals of arbitrary states of the $O(N)$ vector model at the free fixed point. We find that the ERG flow of the ground state and a specific class of excited states is implemented by the action of unitary operators which can be chosen to be local. Consequently, the ERG equations provide a continuum notion of a tensor network. We compare this tensor network with the entanglement renormalization networks, MERA, and its continuum version, cMERA, which have appeared recently in holographic contexts. In particular, the ERG tensor network appears to share the general structure of cMERA but differs in important ways. We comment on possible holographic implications.

Algebraic Tensor Network Renormalization and Holographic duality

Chenqi Meng, Tian Lan, Zheng‐Cheng Gu

Emergent generalized symmetries and the holographic principle play very important roles in understanding quantum phase transitions. In recent years, tensor-network renormalization with generalized symmetry and the corresponding fixed-point tensor formulation have been proposed as a discrete spacetime framework for reformulating conformal field theory. Nevertheless, a complete holographic formulation within this framework is still lacking, and the current formulation does not directly accommodate sector partition functions that are modular covariant in general. In this work, we formulate $\mathcal{R}$-TNR, which builds the categorical constraints of a fusion category $\mathcal{R}$ into local tensor spaces and preserves these constraints under Loop-TNR. For suitable choices of $\mathcal{R}$, the initial tensors constructed here flow under $\mathcal{R}$-Loop-TNR to stable gapless fixed points. In the Ising, tricritical Ising, and three-state Potts conformal field theory examples, a broad range of initial parameters leads to the same gapless fixed point in each example. The method resolves conformal towers by anyon sector and yields scaling dimensions, conformal spins, and magnitudes of sector-resolved structure constants with extremely high accuracy compared to previous methods. These results realize a topological bootstrap based on stable symmetry-topological-order in which finite categorical and geometric input, together with an initial tensor that need not be fine-tuned, suffices to recover the infrared conformal field theory and its sector-resolved conformal data.
