Abstract

Abstract We develop new techniques for studying the modular and the relative modular flows of general excited states. We show that the class of states obtained by acting on the vacuum (or any cyclic and separating state) with invertible operators from the algebra of a region is dense in the Hilbert space. This enables us to express the modular and the relative modular operators, as well as the relative entropies of generic excited states in terms of the vacuum modular operator and the operator that creates the state. In particular, the modular and the relative modular flows ofanystate can be expanded in terms of the modular flow of operators in vacuum. We illustrate the formalism with simple examples including states close to the vacuum, and coherent and squeezed states in generalized free field theory.

Resolving modular flow: a toolkit for free fermions

Johanna Erdmenger B, Pascal Fries, Ignacio A. Reyes +1 more

Abstract Modular flow is a symmetry of the algebra of observables associated to space-time regions. Being closely related to entanglement, it has played a key role in recent connections between information theory, QFT and gravity. However, little is known about its action beyond highly symmetric cases. The key idea of this work is to introduce a new formula for modular flows for free chiral fermions in 1 + 1 dimensions, working directly from the resolvent, a standard technique in complex analysis. We present novel results — not fixed by conformal symmetry — for disjoint regions on the plane, cylinder and torus. Depending on temperature and boundary conditions, these display different behaviour ranging from purely local to non-local in relation to the mixing of operators at spacelike separation. We find the modular two-point function, whose analytic structure is in precise agreement with the KMS condition that governs modular evolution. Our ready-to-use formulae may provide new ingredients to explore the connection between spacetime and entanglement.

Modular Hamiltonians of excited states, OPE blocks and emergent bulk fields

Gábor Sárosi, Tomonori Ugajin

We study the entanglement entropy and the modular Hamiltonian of slightly excited states reduced to a ball shaped region in generic conformal field theories. We set up a formal expansion in the one point functions of the state in which all orders are explicitly given in terms of integrals of multi-point functions along the vacuum modular flow, without a need for replica index analytic continuation. We show that the quadratic order contributions in this expansion can be calculated in a way expected from holography, namely via the bulk canonical energy for the entanglement entropy, and its variation for the modular Hamiltonian. The bulk fields contributing to the canonical energy are defined via the HKLL procedure. In terms of CFT variables, the contribution of each such bulk field to the modular Hamiltonian is given by the OPE block corresponding to the dual operator integrated along the vacuum modular flow. These results do not rely on assuming large N or other special properties of the CFT and therefore they are purely kinematic.

Endpoint contributions to excited-state modular Hamiltonians

Daniel Kabat, Gilad Lifschytz, Phuc Nguyen +1 more

Abstract We compute modular Hamiltonians for excited states obtained by perturbing the vacuum with a unitary operator. We use operator methods and work to first order in the strength of the perturbation. For the most part we divide space in half and focus on perturbations generated by integrating a local operator J over a null plane. Local operators with weight n ≥ 2 under vacuum modular flow produce an additional endpoint contribution to the modular Hamiltonian. Intuitively this is because operators with weight n ≥ 2 can move degrees of freedom from a region to its complement. The endpoint contribution is an integral of J over a null plane. We show this in detail for stress tensor perturbations in two dimensions, where the result can be verified by a conformal transformation, and for scalar perturbations in a CFT. This lets us conjecture a general form for the endpoint contribution that applies to any field theory divided into half-spaces.

Modular Hamiltonians for Euclidean Path Integral States

Srivatsan Balakrishnan, Onkar Parrikar

We study half-space/Rindler modular Hamiltonians for excited states created by turning on sources for local operators in the Euclidean path integral in relativistic quantum field theories. We derive a simple, manifestly Lorentzian formula for the modular Hamiltonian to all orders in perturbation theory in the sources. We apply this formula to the case of shape-deformed half spaces in the vacuum state, and obtain the corresponding modular Hamiltonian to all orders in the shape deformation in terms of products of half-sided null energy operators, i.e., stress tensor components integrated along the future and past Rindler horizons. In the special case where the shape deformation is purely null, our perturbation series can be resummed, and agrees precisely with the known formula for vacuum modular Hamiltonians for null cuts of the Rindler horizon. Finally, we study some universal properties of modular flow (corresponding to Euclidean path integral states) of local operators inside correlation functions in conformal field theories. In particular, we show how the flow becomes the local boost in the limit where the operator being flowed approaches the entanglement cut.

Bounds on relative modular Hamiltonians in general QFT

Adriano Chialastri, Christoph Minz, Ko Sanders

The relative entropy between two states is a key concept in quantum information theory and quantum field theory. In the setting of quantum field theory, its computation requires the handling of relative modular Hamiltonians, which are typically very difficult to compute explicitly. In this paper, we exploit locality properties of general algebraic QFTs to estimate relative modular Hamiltonians between two states, $ω$ and $\tildeω$, and hence also their relative entropy, in terms of the modular Hamiltonian of a reference state $\hatω$, which might be better understood. For suitable pairs of states we can estimate the relative modular Hamiltonian for the algebra of a region $V_2$ from above, resp. from below, in terms of the modular Hamiltonian of $\hatω$ on a larger region $V_3$, resp. a smaller region $V_1$. Pairs of states and choices of regions which are susceptible to our scheme are related to the presence of superluminal signalling in the sense of Sorkin's paradox. If $ω=\hatω$, then there exists a unitary that maps $ω$ to $\tildeω$ on $V_3$ and that does not allow superluminal signalling from the spacelike complement $V_3'$ to $V_2$, resp. from $V_1$ to $V_2'$, if our upper, resp. lower, bound applies. To investigate the strength of our estimates we consider coherent states for CCR systems, focussing particularly on free scalar fields. Our estimates apply even if the relative modular Hamiltonian cannot be computed exactly. For sufficiently regular excitations we recover an exact result by squeezing. Our method thus yields an independent proof for the relative entropy formula in cases where the relative modular Hamiltonian cannot be computed exactly. For massless fields we establish the analogous result also for double cone regions. These results indicate that our estimates do not lose too much information.

The massive modular Hamiltonian

Roberto Longo, Gerardo Morsella

We compute the vacuum local modular Hamiltonian associated with a space ball region in the free scalar massive Quantum Field Theory. We give an explicit expression on the one particle Hilbert space in terms of the massive Legendre differential operator and the Green integral for the Helmholtz operator. The quadratic form of the massive modular Hamiltonian is expressed in terms of an integral of the energy density with parabolic distribution and of a Yukawa potential, that here appears intrinsically. We then get the formula for the local entropy of a Klein-Gordon wave packet. This gives the vacuum relative entropy of a coherent state on the double cone von Neumann algebras associated with the free scalar QFT. Among other points, we have a criterion for a Bogoliubov automorphism to be locally weakly inner and we provide the passivity characterisation of the modular Hamiltonian within the standard subspace set up.
