Abstract

In this paper, we study the dynamical properties of two coupled quantum harmonic oscillators coupled with bosonic non-Markovian environment both in position and momentum. We deduce the exact analytical master equation using Quantum State Diffusion method and give the quantum trajectory description when the control is added to the system by applying interaction between two harmonic oscillators. With numerical simulation, we compare the evolution of entanglement under different controlling effects. At last, we use nonlinear Quantum State Diffusion method to strengthen our above results by getting the same evolution.

An Exact Markovian Decoherence Dynamics of Two Interacting Harmonic Oscillators Coupled to a Bosonic Heat Bath

Gábor Homa, Dávid Hamar, József Zsolt Bernád +2 more

Abstract We present an exact analytical solution of the Hu–Paz–Zhang master equation in a precise Markovian limit for a system of two harmonically coupled harmonic oscillators interacting with a common thermal bath of harmonic oscillators. The thermal bath is initially considered to be at arbitrary temperatures and characterized by an Ohmic Lorentz–Drude spectral density. In the examined system, couplings between the two harmonic oscillators and the environment ensure a complete decoupling of the center-of-mass and relative degrees of freedom, resulting in undamped dynamics in the relative coordinate. The exact time evolution is used to analyze the system’s entanglement dynamics, quantified through logarithmic negativity and quantum mutual information, while ensuring the positivity of the density operator to confirm the physical validity of the results. We demonstrate that, under certain parameter regimes and initial conditions, the asymptotic dynamics can give rise to periodic entanglement-disentanglement behavior. Furthermore, numerical simulations reveal that for negative values of the direct coupling between the oscillators, which are sufficiently close to a critical lower bound beyond which the system becomes unstable, the system can maintain entanglement across a broad temperature range and for arbitrarily long durations.

Momentum coupling in non-Markovian quantum Brownian motion

Luca Ferialdi, Andrea Smirne

We consider a model of non-Markovian quantum Brownian motion that consists of a harmonic oscillator bilinearly coupled to a thermal bath, both via its position and via its momentum operators. We derive the master equation for such a model, and we solve the equations of motion for a generic Gaussian system state. We then investigate the resulting evolution of the first and second moments for both an Ohmic and a super-Ohmic spectral density. In particular, we show that, irrespective of the specific form of the spectral density, the coupling with the momentum enhances the dissipation experienced by the system, accelerating its relaxation to the equilibrium as well as modifying the asymptotic state of the dynamics. Eventually, we characterize explicitly the non-Markovianity of the evolution using a general criterion which relies on the positivity of the master equation coefficients.

Modulation and protection of entanglement in a two-qubit system via two interacting oscillator control

Pablo Carlos López Vázquez, Andrés García, Josué Romero

We investigate the control and protection of two-qubit entanglement through engineered interactions between two auxiliary harmonic oscillators. Each qubit is coupled to a local oscillator via a dephasing interaction, while the oscillators interact through independently tunable position-position and momentum-momentum couplings. Employing the characteristic-function representation, we obtain analytical solutions for the composite-system dynamics and examine how the stability properties of the coupled oscillators determine the evolution of two-qubit concurrence. Our analysis reveals distinct dynamical regimes exhibiting entanglement revivals, suppression, or decay, and identifies configurations in which oscillator interactions effectively reduce entanglement degradation. We further investigate the influence of thermal dissipation using local and global master-equation descriptions, demonstrating that suitable oscillator couplings can preserve substantial two-qubit entanglement under the dissipative conditions considered. These results establish a connection between the dynamical stability of auxiliary bosonic modes and the controllability of entanglement in discrete-variable quantum systems, providing a potential strategy for entanglement protection through engineered oscillator interactions.

Entanglement dynamics of nonidentical oscillators under decohering environments

Fernando Galve, Gian Luca Giorgi, Roberta Zambrini

We study the evolution of entanglement for a pair of coupled nonidentical harmonic oscillators in contact with an environment. For both cases of a common bath and of two separate baths for each of the oscillators, a full master equation is provided without rotating-wave approximation. The entanglement dynamics is analyzed as a function of the diversity between the oscillators' frequencies and their positive or negative mutual coupling and also the correlation between the occupation numbers. The singular effect of the resonance condition (identical oscillators) and its relationship with the possibility of preserving asymptotic entanglement are discussed. The importance of the bath's memory properties is investigated by comparing Markovian and non-Markovian evolutions.

Exact master equation and quantum decoherence of two coupled harmonic oscillators in a general environment

Chung-Hsien Chou, Ting Yu, B. L. Hu

In this paper we derive an exact master equation for two coupled quantum harmonic oscillators interacting via bilinear coupling with a common environment at arbitrary temperature made up of many harmonic oscillators with a general spectral density function. We first show a simple derivation based on the observation that the two harmonic oscillator model can be effectively mapped into that of a single harmonic oscillator in a general environment plus a free harmonic oscillator. Since the exact one harmonic oscillator master equation is available [B. L. Hu, J. P. Paz, and Y. Zhang, Phys. Rev. D 45, 2843 (1992)], the exact master equation with all its coefficients for this two harmonic oscillator model can be easily deduced from the known results of the single harmonic oscillator case. In the second part we give an influence functional treatment of this model and provide explicit expressions for the evolutionary operator of the reduced density matrix which are useful for the study of decoherence and disentanglement issues. We show three applications of this master equation: on the decoherence and disentanglement of two harmonic oscillators due to their interaction with a common environment under Markovian approximation, and a derivation of the uncertainty principle at finite temperature for a composite object, modeled by two interacting harmonic oscillators. The exact master equation for two, and its generalization to N, harmonic oscillators interacting with a general environment are expected to be useful for the analysis of quantum coherence, entanglement, fluctuations, and dissipation of mesoscopic objects toward the construction of a theoretical framework for macroscopic quantum phenomena.

Non-Markovian entanglement dynamics of quantum continuous variable systems in thermal environments

Kuan-Liang Liu, Hsi‐Sheng Goan

We study two continuous variable systems (or two harmonic oscillators) and investigate their entanglement evolution under the influence of non-Markovian thermal environments. The continuous variable systems could be two modes of electromagnetic fields or two nanomechanical oscillators in the quantum domain. We use the quantum open system method to derive the non-Markovian master equations of the reduced density matrix for two different but related models of the continuous variable systems. The two models both consist of two interacting harmonic oscillators. In model A, each of the two oscillators is coupled to its own independent thermal reservoir, while in model B the two oscillators are coupled to a common reservoir. To quantify the degrees of entanglement for bipartite continuous variable systems in Gaussian states, logarithmic negativity is used. We find that the dynamics of the quantum entanglement is sensitive to the initial states, the oscillator-oscillator interaction, the oscillator-environment interaction and the coupling to a common bath or to different, independent baths.
