Abstract

Abstract Two-dimensional CFTs have an infinite set of commuting conserved charges, known as the quantum KdV charges. We study the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble with chemical potentials for these charges at high temperature. In a large central charge limit, the partition function can be computed in a saddle-point approximation. We compare the ensemble values of the KdV charges to the values in a microstate, and find that they match irrespective of the values of the chemical potentials. We study the partition function at finite central charge perturbatively in the chemical potentials, and find that this degeneracy is broken. We also study the statistics of the KdV charges at high level within a Virasoro representation, and find that they are sharply peaked.

Generalized Gibbs Ensemble of 2d CFTs at large central charge in the thermodynamic limit

Anatoly Y. Dymarsky, Kirill Pavlenko

Abstract We discuss partition function of 2d CFTs decorated by higher qKdV charges in the thermodynamic limit when the size of the spatial circle goes to infinity. In this limit the saddle point approximation is exact and at infinite central charge generalized partition function can be calculated explicitly. We show that leading 1/c corrections to free energy can be reformulated as a sum over Young tableaux which we calculate for the first two qKdV charges. Next, we compare generalized ensemble with the “eigenstate ensemble” that consists of a single primary state. At infinite central charge the ensembles match at the level of expectation values of local operators for any values of qKdV fugacities. When the central charge is large but finite, for any values of the fugacities the aforementioned ensembles are distinguishable.

Generalized Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis in 2D Conformal Field Theories

Anatoly Y. Dymarsky, Kirill Pavlenko

Infinite-dimensional conformal symmetry in two dimensions leads to integrability of 2D conformal field theories (CFTs) by giving rise to an infinite tower of local conserved quantum Korteweg-de Vries (qKdV) charges in involution. We discuss how the presence of conserved charges constrains equilibration in 2D CFTs. We propose that in the thermodynamic limit large central charge 2D CFTs satisfy generalized eigenstate thermalization, with the values of qKdV charges forming a complete set of thermodynamically relevant quantities, which unambiguously determine expectation values of all local observables from the vacuum family. Equivalence of ensembles further provides that local properties of an eigenstate can be described by the generalized Gibbs ensemble that includes only qKdV charges. In the case of a general initial state, upon equilibration, the emerging generalized Gibbs ensemble will necessarily include negative chemical potentials and holographically will be described by a quasiclassical black hole with quantum soft hair.

Generalized Gibbs Ensemble of 2D CFTs with U(1) charge from the AGT correspondence

Fábio Novaes

A bstract The Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE) is relevant to understand the thermalization of quantum systems with an infinite set of conserved charges. In this work, we analyze the GGE partition function of 2D Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) with a U(1) charge and quantum Benjamin-Ono 2 (qBO 2 ) hierarchy charges. We use the Alday-Gaiotto-Tachikawa (AGT) correspondence to express the thermal trace in terms of the Alba-Fateev-Litvinov-Tarnopolskiy (AFLT) basis of descendants, which diagonalizes all charges. We analyze the GGE partition function in the thermodynamic semiclassical limit, including the first order quantum correction. We find that the equality between GGE averages and primary eigenvalues of the qBO 2 charges is attainable in the strict large c limit and potentially violated at the subleading 1 /c order. We also obtain the finite c partition function when only the first non-trivial charge is turned on, expressed in terms of partial theta functions. Our results should be relevant to the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis for charged CFTs, Warped CFTs and effective field theory descriptions of condensed matter systems.

Exact generalized partition function of 2D CFTs at large central charge

Anatoly Y. Dymarsky, Kirill Pavlenko

Abstract We discuss generalized partition function of 2d CFTs on thermal cylinder decorated by higher qKdV charges. We propose that in the large central charge limit qKdV charges factorize such that generalized partition function can be rewritten in terms of auxiliary non-interacting bosons. The explicit expression for the generalized free energy is readily available in terms of the boson spectrum, which can be deduced from the conventional thermal expectation values of qKdV charges. In other words, the picture of the auxiliary non-interacting bosons allows extending thermal one-point functions to the full non-perturbative generalized partition function. We verify this conjecture for the first seven qKdV charges using recently obtained pertrubative results and find corresponding contributions to the auxiliary boson masses. We further extend these results by conjecturing the full spectrum of bosons and find an exact expression for the generalized partition function as a function of infinite tower of chemical potentials in the limit of large central charge.

Korteweg–de Vries characters in large central charge CFTs

Enrico M. Brehm, Diptarka Das

Two-dimensional conformal field theories with just Virasoro symmetry are endowed with integrable structure. We review how to construct the integrable charges in a two-dimensional conformal field theory and how to relate them to the charges of quantum sinh-Gordon theory when $c\ensuremath{\ge}25$. We then explicitly calculate the single charge characters in the large $c$ limit for all charges and thereby reveal how their degeneracies grow within one module. This, in particular, allows us to approximate the characters in the limit of small chemical potential, which source the respective charges. The latter gives us insights into possible transformation properties of the characters. We also comment on the full generalized Gibbs ensemble and approximations to pure states.

Thermalization with chemical potentials, and higher spin black holes

Gautam Mandal, Ritam Sinha, Nilakash Sorokhaibam

We study the long time behaviour of local observables following a quantum quench in 1+1 dimensional conformal field theories possessing additional conserved charges besides the energy. We show that the expectation value of an arbitrary string of local ob-servables supported on a finite interval exponentially approaches an equilibrium value. The equilibrium is characterized by a temperature and chemical potentials defined in terms of the quenched state. For an infinite number of commuting conserved charges, the equilibrium ensemble is a generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE). We compute the thermalization rate in a systematic perturbation in the chemical potentials, using a new technique to sum over an infinite number of Feynman diagrams. The above technique also allows us to compute relaxation times for thermal Green’s functions in the presence of an arbitrary number of chemical potentials. In the context of a higher spin (hs[λ]) holography, the partition function of the final equilibrium GGE is known to agree with that of a higher spin black hole. The thermalization rate from the CFT computed in our paper agrees with the quasinormal frequency of a scalar field in this black hole.
