Dynamical and topological properties of the Kitaev model in a [111] magnetic field

Matthias Gohlke, Roderich Moessner, Frank Pollmann

The Kitaev model exhibits a quantum spin liquid hosting emergent fractionalized excitations. We study the Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice coupled to a magnetic field along the [111] axis. Utilizing large-scale matrix product-based numerical models, we confirm three phases with transitions at different field strengths depending on the sign of the Kitaev exchange: a non-Abelian topological phase at low fields, an enigmatic intermediate regime only present for antiferromagnetic Kitaev exchange, and a field-polarized phase. For the topological phase, we numerically observe the expected cubic scaling of the gap and extract the quantum dimension of the non-Abelian anyons. Furthermore, we investigate dynamical signatures of the topological and the field-polarized phase using a matrix product operator-based time evolution method.

Spin dynamics in the Kitaev model with disorder: Quantum Monte Carlo study of dynamical spin structure factor, magnetic susceptibility, and NMR relaxation rate

Joji Nasu, Yukitoshi Motome

The Kitaev quantum spin liquid provides an ideal playground for the spin fractionalization to Majorana and vison excitations. The fingerprints manifest themselves in spin dynamics, which are accessible via many experimental techniques. However, extrinsic disorder effects are inevitable in real materials. Here, the authors compute finite-temperature spin dynamics in disordered Kitaev spin liquids and clarify that disorder seriously affects the vison excitations rather than Majorana quasiparticles. Furthermore, the softening of the vison excitations and Majorana zero modes emerge due to disorder, which will help identify Kitaev magnets.

Classical patterns in the quantum rainbow channeling of high energy electrons

M. Ćosić, Srdjan Petrović, Y. Takabayashi

We are investigating the quantum dynamics of a well-collimated electron beam transmitting through planar channels of the Si crystal. Electron states were represented by wave packets while the electron beam is treated as an ensemble of noninteracting wave packets. We have investigated the relationship between classical caustic pattern and anharmonicity of the potential and analyzed how quantum dynamic depends on the wave packet impact parameter and beam's angular divergence. We found that the extrema of the electron trajectory period, considered as a function of the impact parameter, determine the shape of the caustic pattern. All wave packet probability densities have multiple maxima generated by a self-interference. Their sum, that represents probability density of an ensemble, was found to depends strongly on the beam angular divergence. For small divergence, most peaks of different wave packets are aligned causing wavelike behavior of the ensemble. For moderate angular divergence maxima of some wave packets, are aligned with minima of others, resulting in the emergence of the classical caustic pattern. We have shown and experimentally confirmed that the only indication that the observed caustic pattern is generated by the quantum dynamics is a slight systematic shift of the corresponding caustic maxima.
