Quasiparticle origin of dynamical quantum phase transitions

Abstract

This paper establishes a direct connection between the equilibrium quasiparticle spectrum of a model and the nonanalytic behavior appearing in its Loschmidt return rate. For small quenches within the ordered phase, nonanalytic behavior in the form of so-called anomalous cusps occurs in the return rate only when the lowest-lying quasiparticles are local excitations.

Anomalous dynamical phase in quantum spin chains with long-range interactions

Ingo Homrighausen, Nils O. Abeling, Valentin Zauner-Stauber +1 more

The existence or absence of nonanalytic cusps in the Loschmidt-echo return rate is traditionally employed to distinguish between a regular dynamical phase (regular cusps) and a trivial phase (no cusps) in quantum spin chains after a global quench. However, numerical evidence in a recent study (J. C. Halimeh and V. Zauner-Stauber, arXiv:1610.02019) suggests that instead of the trivial phase, a distinct anomalous dynamical phase characterized by a novel type of nonanalytic cusps occurs in the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model when interactions are sufficiently long range. Using an analytic semiclassical approach and exact diagonalization, we show that this anomalous phase also arises in the fully connected case of infinite-range interactions, and we discuss its defining signature. Our results show that the transition from the regular to the anomalous dynamical phase coincides with ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$-symmetry breaking in the infinite-time limit, thereby showing a connection between two different concepts of dynamical criticality. Our work further expands the dynamical phase diagram of long-range interacting quantum spin chains, and can be tested experimentally in ion-trap setups and ultracold atoms in optical cavities, where interactions are inherently long range.

Nonequilibrium Dynamical Quantum Phase Transitions in the Extended Agassi Model

Ritesh Kumar Palai, Rajiv Kumar, Venktesh Singh +1 more

We investigate dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) in the extended Agassi model following sudden quenches of same level pairing ($Σ$), monopole-monopole ($χ$) and cross level pairing ($Λ$) strengths. Using exact diagonalization, we characterize the non-equilibrium dynamics through the Loschmidt echo and intensive return-rate function. Quenches across equilibrium phase boundaries produce cusp-like structures in the return rate that shows non-analyticities with increasing system size. Equilibrium finite size to large scaling identifies the $χ$-driven transition as a second order phase transition similar to mean-field, Dicke, and Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) models critical behaviour with the exponent of the order parameter $β\simeq 1/2$, while the $Σ$- and $Λ$-driven transitions are first order. We further characterize the associated dynamical singularities through a local scaling exponent $α$, with $α_χ\simeq 2/3$, $α_Λ\simeq 1/3$, and $α_Σ\simeq 3/2$ of all three parameters. The distinct scaling behaviours across the parameter channels show that dynamical criticality is not determined solely by the equilibrium order of the transition, revealing multiple dynamical scaling regimes. These non-analyticities are associated with the Fisher zeros of the Loschmidt amplitude, which cross the real time axis at critical times and the time derivatives of the return-rate function to characterize the order of DQPTs within the extended Agassi model.

Dynamical phase transitions in quantum spin models with antiferromagnetic long-range interactions

Jad C. Halimeh, Maarten Van Damme, Lingzhen Guo +2 more

In recent years, dynamical phase transitions and out-of-equilibrium criticality have been at the forefront of ultracold gases and condensed matter research. Whereas universality and scaling are established topics in equilibrium quantum many-body physics, out-of-equilibrium extensions of such concepts still leave much to be desired. Using exact diagonalization and the time-dependent variational principle in uniform matrix product states, we calculate the time evolution of the local order parameter and Loschmidt return rate in transverse-field Ising chains with antiferromagnetic power law-decaying interactions, and map out the corresponding rich dynamical phase diagram. Anomalous cusps in the return rate, which are ubiquitous at small quenches within the ordered phase in the case of ferromagnetic long-range interactions, are absent within the accessible timescales of our simulations in the antiferromagnetic case, showing that long-range interactions are not a sufficient condition for their appearance. We attribute this to much weaker domain-wall binding in the antiferromagnetic case. For quenches across the quantum critical point, regular cusps appear in the return rate and connect to the local order parameter changing sign, indicating the concurrence of two major concepts of dynamical phase transitions. Our results consolidate conclusions of previous works that a necessary condition for the appearance of anomalous cusps in the return rate after quenches within the ordered phase is for topologically trivial local spin flips to be the energetically dominant excitations in the spectrum of the quench Hamiltonian. Our findings are readily accessible in modern trapped-ion setups and we outline the associated experimental considerations.

Phase space anatomy of dynamical quantum phase transitions

Zakaria Mzaouali

Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPT) are commonly defined either by the behavior of a late-time order parameter or by nonanalyticities in a quantum state's return rate. We show that discrete phase space fundamentally separates these two notions by the scale of information they require. An order parameter transition is determined by a local reduced state, requiring no quasiprobability negativity. In contrast, general global returns can contain information absent from every proper reduced state. For stabilizer returns, we derive an exact decomposition of the rate into distinct costs from loss of support and destructive quantum interference. Dynamics of a qutrit Potts chain show that selective cancellation can reverse the ranking of competing block returns and delay their exchange. An exact control also exhibits a thermodynamic return cusp with zero negativity at the crossing. The existence of a return singularity and the role of interference in selecting its branches are therefore distinct physical questions.

Dynamical topological quantum phase transitions at criticality

M. Sadrzadeh, Rouhollah Jafari, A. Langari

The nonequilibrium dynamics of two-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, in the presence of staggered chemical potential, is investigated using the notion of dynamical quantum phase transition. We contribute to expanding the systematic understanding of the interrelation between the equilibrium quantum phase transition and the dynamical quantum phase transition (DQPT). Specifically, we find that dynamical quantum phase transition relies on the existence of massless propagating quasiparticles as signaled by their impact on the Loschmidt overlap. These massless excitations are a subset of all gapless modes, which leads to quantum phase transitions. The underlying two-dimensional model reveals gapless modes, which do not couple to the dynamical quantum phase transitions, while relevant massless quasiparticles present periodic nonanalytic signatures on the Loschmidt amplitude. The topological nature of DQPT is verified by the quantized integer values of the topological order parameter, which gets even values. Moreover, we have shown that the dynamical topological order parameter truly captures the topological phase transition on the zero Berry curvature line, where the Chern number is zero and the two-dimensional Zak phase is not the proper indicator.

Dynamical quantum phase transition and thermal equilibrium in the lattice Thirring model

Mari Carmen Bañuls, Krzysztof Cichy, Hao-Ti Hung +3 more

Using tensor network methods, we simulate the real-time evolution of the lattice Thirring model quenched out of equilibrium in both the critical and massive phases and study the appearance of dynamical quantum phase transitions, as nonanalyticities in the Loschmidt rate. Although the presence of a dynamical quantum phase transition in the model does not correspond to quenches across the critical line of the equilibrium phase diagram at zero temperature, we identify a threshold in the energy density of the initial state, necessary for a dynamical quantum phase transition to be present. Moreover, in the case of the gapped quench Hamiltonian, we unveil a connection of this threshold to a transition between different regions in the finite-temperature phase diagram.
