Abstract

Recently, there has been a surge of interest in using R\'enyi entropies as quantifiers of correlations in many-body quantum systems. However, it is well known that in general these entropies do not satisfy the strong subadditivity inequality, which is a central property ensuring the positivity of correlation measures. In fact, in many cases they do not even satisfy the weaker condition of subadditivity. In the present paper we shed light on this subject by providing a detailed survey of R\'enyi entropies for bosonic and fermionic Gaussian states. We show that for bosons the R\'enyi entropies always satisfy subadditivity, but not necessarily strong subadditivity. Conversely, for fermions both do not hold in general. We provide the precise intervals of the R\'enyi index $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ for which subadditivity and strong subadditivity are valid in each case.

The subadditivity of quantum entropy in Gaussian quantum systems

Lijun Liu, Xiaozhen Ge, Shuming Cheng

The entropy of a quantum state measures the information or uncertainty contained in the quantum system and plays a crucial role in quantum information theory. Many entropic properties, such as the subadditivity, have been studied for the discrete system with a finite-dimensional state space, while much less is explored in the infinite-dimensional system. In this work, we study the entropic properties of the continuous system that models a collection of Gaussian modes or fields. In particular, we identify the parameter range for the Rényi, Tsallis, and Unified entropies of Gaussian states that they are additive, subadditive, and strong subadditive. We show that the Rényi entropies are subadditive, further giving rise to the subadditivity of the Tsallis and Unified entropies in certain parameter range. We also find that the Tsallis and Unified entropies are not strong subadditive, while the Rényi entropies with the order ranging from 1 to 2 are conjectured to admit the strong subadditivity. Our results are useful in studying quantum correlations and channel capacities in Gaussian systems.

Measuring Gaussian Quantum Information and Correlations Using the Rényi Entropy of Order 2

Gerardo Adesso, Davide Girolami, Alessio Serafini

We demonstrate that the Rényi-2 entropy provides a natural measure of information for any multimode Gaussian state of quantum harmonic systems, operationally linked to the phase-space Shannon sampling entropy of the Wigner distribution of the state. We prove that, in the Gaussian scenario, such an entropy satisfies the strong subadditivity inequality, a key requirement for quantum information theory. This allows us to define and analyze measures of Gaussian entanglement and more general quantum correlations based on such an entropy, which are shown to satisfy relevant properties such as monogamy.

The generalized strong subadditivity of the von Neumann entropy for bosonic quantum Gaussian systems

Giacomo De Palma, Dario Trevisan

We prove a generalization of the strong subadditivity of the von Neumann entropy for bosonic quantum Gaussian systems. Such generalization determines the minimum values of linear combinations of the entropies of subsystems associated to arbitrary linear functions of the quadratures, and holds for arbitrary quantum states including the scenario where the entropies are conditioned on a memory quantum system. We apply our result to prove new entropic uncertainty relations with quantum memory, a generalization of the quantum Entropy Power Inequality, and the linear time scaling of the entanglement entropy produced by quadratic Hamiltonians.

The structure of Rényi entropic inequalities

Noah Linden, Milán Mosonyi, Andreas Winter

We investigate the universal inequalities relating the α -Rényi entropies of the marginals of a multi-partite quantum state. This is in analogy to the same question for the Shannon and von Neumann entropies ( α =1), which are known to satisfy several non-trivial inequalities such as strong subadditivity. Somewhat surprisingly, we find for 0< α <1 that the only inequality is non-negativity: in other words, any collection of non-negative numbers assigned to the non-empty subsets of n parties can be arbitrarily well approximated by the α -entropies of the 2 n −1 marginals of a quantum state. For α >1, we show analogously that there are no non-trivial homogeneous (in particular, no linear) inequalities. On the other hand, it is known that there are further, nonlinear and indeed non-homogeneous, inequalities delimiting the α -entropies of a general quantum state. Finally, we also treat the case of Rényi entropies restricted to classical states (i.e. probability distributions), which, in addition to non-negativity, are also subject to monotonicity. For α ≠0,1, we show that this is the only other homogeneous relation.

Quantum Entropy and Correlations in Quantum Information

Reinhold A. Bertlmann, Nicolai Friis

Abstract Chapter 20 provides a discussion of entropies and entropic quantities in quantum information theory, briefly considering the generalizations of the Rényi entropy to the quantum regime, but mainly focusing on the von Neumann entropy and its properties such as concavity, the Araki-Lieb inequality, and subadditivity. We introduce the quantum relative entropy, quantum joint entropy, quantum conditional entropy, and quantum mutual information, and prove key properties and results for these quantities, including Klein’s inequality, joint convexity, additivity, and monotonicity under completely positive and trace-preserving maps of the relative entropy, as well as weak monotonicity and strong subadditivity of the von Neumann entropy. We then analyse the relation of (negative) conditional entropy and entanglement. In this context we discuss the conditional amplitude operator and the mutual amplitude operator, as well as conditional Rényi entropies and their role for entanglement detection.
