Abstract

We consider a quasi-one-dimensional model of a two-component Fermi gas at zero temperature on one, two and three-leg attractive-U Hubbard ladders. We construct the grand canonical phase diagram of a two-component spin-polarized gas. We find that the structure of the phase diagram of the attractive-U Hubbard model for two and three leg ladders significantly differs q from the structure of the phase diagram of a single chain. We argue that the single chain model is a special case, and that multichain ladders display qualitative features of the 1D-to-3D crossover, observed in experiments with trapped ultracold gases.

Dimensional crossover on multileg attractive- U Hubbard ladders

Anastasia Potapova, Ian Pilé, Tian-Cheng Yi +2 more

We study the ground-state properties of a polarized two-component Fermi gas on multileg attractive-$U$ Hubbard ladders. Using exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization-group-method simulations, we construct grand-canonical phase diagrams for ladder widths of up to $W=5$ and varying perpendicular geometries, characterizing the quasi-one-dimensional regime of the dimensional crossover. We unveil a multicritical point marking the onset of partial polarization in those phase diagrams, a candidate regime of finite-momentum pairing. We compare our findings with recent experimental and theoretical studies of quasi-one-dimensional polarized Fermi gases.

Quasi-One-Dimensional Polarized Fermi Superfluids

Meera M. Parish, Stefan K. Baur, Erich J. Mueller +1 more

We calculate the zero-temperature (T=0) phase diagram of a polarized two-component Fermi gas in an array of weakly coupled parallel one-dimensional (1D) "tubes" produced by a two-dimensional optical lattice. Increasing the lattice strength drives a crossover from three-dimensional (3D) to 1D behavior, stabilizing the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) modulated superfluid phase. We argue that the most promising regime for observing the FFLO phase is in the quasi-1D regime, where the atomic motion is largely 1D but there is weak tunneling in the other directions that stabilizes long-range order. In the FFLO phase, we describe a phase transition where the quasiparticle spectrum changes from gapless near the 3D regime to gapped in quasi-1D.

Dimensional crossover in a spin-imbalanced Fermi gas

Shovan Dutta, Erich J. Mueller

We model the one-dimensional (1D) to three-dimensional (3D) crossover in a cylindrically trapped Fermi gas with attractive interactions and spin imbalance. We calculate the mean-field phase diagram and study the relative stability of exotic superfluid phases as a function of interaction strength and temperature. For weak interactions and low density, we find 1D-like behavior, which repeats as a function of the chemical potential as new channels open. For strong interactions, mixing of single-particle levels gives 3D-like behavior at all densities. Furthermore, we map the system to an effective 1D model, finding significant density dependence of the effective 1D scattering length.

Pair Correlations of a Spin-Imbalanced Fermi Gas on Two-Leg Ladders

Adrian E. Feiguin, Fabian Heidrich‐Meisner

We study the pair correlations of a spin-imbalanced two-leg ladder with attractive interactions, using the density matrix renormalization group method. We identify regions in the phase diagram spanned by the chemical potential and the magnetic field that can harbor Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov- (FFLO-)like physics. Results for the pair structure factor, exhibiting multiple pairing wave vectors, substantiate the presence of FFLO-like correlations. We further discuss phase separation scenarios induced by a harmonic trap, which differ from the case of isolated chains.

Spin-imbalanced ultracold Fermi gases in a two-dimensional array of tubes

Bhuvanesh Sundar, Jacob A. Fry, Melissa Revelle +2 more

Motivated by a recent experiment Revelle et al., [Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 235301 (2016)] that characterized the one- to three-dimensional crossover in a spin-imbalanced ultracold gas of $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ atoms trapped in a two-dimensional array of tunnel-coupled tubes, we calculate the phase diagram for this system by using Hartree-Fock Bogoliubov-de Gennes mean-field theory and compare the results with experimental data. Mean-field theory predicts fully-spin-polarized normal, partially-spin-polarized normal, spin-polarized superfluid, and spin-balanced superfluid phases in a homogeneous system. We use the local density approximation to obtain density profiles of the gas in a harmonic trap. We compare these calculations with experimental measurements in Revelle et al. as well as previously unpublished data. Our calculations qualitatively agree with experimentally measured densities and coordinates of the phase boundaries in the trap and quantitatively agree with experimental measurements at moderate-to-large polarizations. Our calculations also reproduce the experimentally observed universal scaling of the phase boundaries for different scattering lengths at a fixed value of scaled intertube tunneling. However, our calculations have quantitative differences with experimental measurements at low polarization and fail to capture important features of the one- to three-dimensional crossover observed in experiments. These suggest the important role of physics beyond mean-field theory in the experiments. We expect that our numerical results will aid future experiments in narrowing the search for the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase.

Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov states in one-dimensional spin-polarized ultracold atomic Fermi gases

Xia-Ji Liu, Hui Hu, P. D. Drummond

We present a systematic study of quantum phases in a one-dimensional spin-polarized Fermi gas. Three comparative theoretical methods are used to explore the phase diagram at zero temperature: the mean-field theory with either an order parameter in a single-plane-wave form or a self-consistently determined order parameter using the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations, as well as the exact Bethe ansatz method. We find that a spatially inhomogeneous Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase, which lies between the fully paired Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) state and the fully polarized normal state, dominates most of the phase diagram of a uniform gas. The phase transition from the BCS state to the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase is of second order, and therefore there are no phase separation states in one-dimensional homogeneous polarized gases. This is in sharp contrast to the three-dimensional situation, where a phase separation regime is predicted to occupy a very large space in the phase diagram. We conjecture that the prediction of the dominance of the phase separation phases in three dimension could be an artifact of the non-self-consistent mean-field approximation, which is heavily used in the study of three-dimensional polarized Fermi gases. We consider also the effect of a harmonic trapping potential on the phase diagram, and find that in this case the trap generally leads to phase separation, in accord with the experimental observations for a trapped gas in three dimensions. We finally investigate the local fermionic density of states of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov ansatz. A two-energy-gap structure appears, which could be used as an experimental probe of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov states.
