The quantum error correction interpretation of AdS/CFT establishes a sense of fluidity to the bulk/boundary dictionary. We show how this property can be utilized to construct a dictionary for operators behind horizons of pure black holes. We demonstrate this within the context of the SYK model with pure black hole microstates obtained via projecting out a single side of the thermofield double (and perturbed versions thereof). Assuming an erasure subsystem code for the duality between the eternal black hole and the thermofield double, this projection results in a rewiring of the dictionary so as to map the interior operators to the remaining boundary in a determinable way. We find this dictionary to be sensitive to the implemented projection in a manner reminiscent of previous state-dependent constructions of the black hole interior. We also comment on how the fluidity of the dictionary can be used to transfer information between two black holes connected by a wormhole, relating the ideas of entanglement wedge reconstruction and the Hayden-Preskill decoding criterion.

Abstract When the bulk geometry in AdS/CFT contains a black hole, boundary subregions may be sufficient to reconstruct certain bulk operators if and only if the black hole microstate is known, an example of state dependence. Reconstructions exist for any microstate, but no reconstruction works for all microstates. We refine this dichotomy, demonstrating that the same boundary operator can often be used for large subspaces of black hole microstates, corresponding to a constant fraction α of the black hole entropy. In the Schrödinger picture, the boundary subregion encodes the α-bits (a concept from quantum information) of a bulk region containing the black hole and bounded by extremal surfaces. These results have important consequences for the structure of AdS/CFT and for quantum information. Firstly, they imply that the bulk reconstruction is necessarily only approximate and allow us to place non-perturbative lower bounds on the error when doing so. Second, they provide a simple and tractable limit in which the entanglement wedge is state dependent, but in a highly controlled way. Although the state dependence of operators comes from ordinary quantum error correction, there are clear connections to the Papadodimas-Raju proposal for understanding operators behind black hole horizons. In tensor network toy models of AdS/CFT, we see how state dependence arises from the bulk operator being ‘pushed’ through the black hole itself. Finally, we show that black holes provide the first ‘explicit’ examples of capacity-achieving α-bit codes. Unintuitively, Hawking radiation always reveals the α-bits of a black hole as soon as possible. In an appendix, we apply a result from the quantum information literature to prove that entanglement wedge reconstruction can be made exact to all orders in 1/N.
In this thesis, we study a couple of different but related questions: holography and quantum error correction, the gravitationally dressed operators and locality in holographic theory, introducing generalized versions of the class of continuous matrix product state as the most famous class of tensor network, and the notion of Krylov complexity of matrix quantum mechanics. In the first part, we use the notion of the Petz map and apply it to reconstruct operators in the entanglement wedge. Moreover, for geometries that contain black holes, we generalize the notion of the Petz map by itself and reconstruct black hole interior modes. In particular, we show that the Petz map reconstruction of the black hole interior is equivalent to the Papadodimas-Raju Proposal. In the second part, within the AdS/CFT correspondence, we identify a class of CFT operators which represent diff-invariant and approximately local observables in the gravitational dual. The interpretation of these observables is that they are not gravitationally dressed with respect to the boundary, but instead to features of the state. We also provide evidence that there are bulk observables whose commutator vanishes to all orders in 1/N with the entire algebra of single-trace operators defined in a space-like separated time-band. In the third part, we defined two new classes of continuous tensor networks by generalizing the class of continuous matrix product states. One is appropriate to describe the ground state of the relativistic field theory at strong coupling and the other is proper for the theories on compact spacetime. We conjecture that the possible bulk dual of it in the AdS/CFT can be an evaporating black hole microstates with the end of the word branes. In the last project, we study the Krylov complexity for 1-matrix quantum mechanics. In the ground state, the Lancsoz coefficients have linear behavior. The bn coefficients have a positive slope while an coefficients have a negative slope. In the thermal states, the an coefficients are zero while bn have two branches of linear growth. Although matrix quantum mechanics is a solvable theory rather than chaotic, we find the linear behavior of the Lancsoz coefficients of this theory.
Abstract According to holography, entanglement is the building block of spacetime; therefore, drastic changes of entanglement will lead to interesting transitions in the dual spacetime. In this paper, we study the effect of projective measurements on the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model’s thermofield double state, dual to an eternal black hole in Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity. We calculate the (Renyi-2) mutual information between the two copies of the SYK model upon projective measurement of a subset of fermions in one copy. We propose a dual JT gravity model that can account for the change of entanglement due to measurement, and observe an entanglement wedge phase transition in the von Neumann entropy. The entanglement wedge for the unmeasured side changes from the region outside the horizon to include the entire time reversal invariant slice of the two-sided geometry as the number of measured Majorana fermions increases. Therefore, after the transition, the bulk information stored in the measured subsystem is not entirely lost upon projection in one copy of the SYK model, but rather teleported to the other copy. We further propose a decoding protocol to elucidate the teleportation interpretation, and connect our analysis to the physics of traversable wormholes.
The black hole information paradox is one of the important questions of physics in the last few decades. We study the reconstruction of the bulk operators in AdS/CFT when the geometry contains a black hole. The black hole exterior can be mapped to the CFT via a very simple Petz map which coincides with the HKLL map reconstruction of the black hole exterior. For the interior modes of the bulk theory, using the definition of the Petz recovery channel in modular theory, we can find the mapping from the black hole interior to the dual boundary theory. In the case of the evaporating black hole, it is expected that the interior modes map to some operators that have support only on the bath system, the cavity that absorbs the Hawking radiation. The most important observation that we have here is that in the case that we have a typical black hole microstate in the bulk, the CFT dual of the interior modes that we can find using the Petz recovery channel are exactly the operators that so-called "mirror operator " in the Papadodimas-Raju proposal. The main idea of the PR proposal is to focus on a code subspace of the CFT theory, which is created by acting with a small algebra on the corresponding pure state and then fnd the CFT description of the interior operator in a state-dependent manner just in the chosen code subs. Therefore, we can interpret Papadodimas- Raju proposal as an example of the Petz map reconstruction. It may help us answer some open questions about their procedure.
Abstract The black hole interior is a mysterious region of spacetime where non-perturbative effects are sometimes important. These non-perturbative effects are believed to be highly theory-dependent. We sharpen these statements by considering a setup where the state of the black hole is in a superposition of states corresponding to boundary theories with different couplings, entangled with a reference which keeps track of those couplings. The entanglement wedge of the reference can then be interpreted as the bulk region most sensitive to the values of the couplings. In simple bulk models, e.g., JT gravity + a matter BCFT, the QES formula implies that the reference contains the black hole interior at late times. We also analyze the Renyi-2 entropy tr ρ2 of the reference, which can be viewed as a diagnostic of chaos via the Loschmidt echo. We find explicitly the replica wormhole that diagnoses the island and restores unitarity. Numerical and analytical evidence of these statements in the SYK model is presented. Similar considerations are expected to apply in higher dimensional AdS/CFT, for marginal and even irrelevant couplings.
