Supersymmetric quantum walks with chiral symmetry

Abstract

Quantum walks have attracted attention as a promising platform realizing topological phenomena and many physicists have introduced various types of indices to characterize topologically protected bound states that are robust against perturbations. In this paper, we introduce an index from a supersymmetric point of view. This allows us to define indices for all chiral symmetric quantum walks such as multi-dimensional split-step quantum walks and quantum walks on graphs, for which there has been no index theory. Moreover, the index gives a lower bound on the number of bound states robust against compact perturbations. We also calculate the index for several concrete examples including the unitary transformation that appears in Grover's search algorithm.

Bulk-boundary correspondence for chiral symmetric quantum walks

János K. Asbóth, Hideaki Obuse

Discrete-time quantum walks (DTQW) have topological phases that are richer than those of time-independent lattice Hamiltonians. Even the basic symmetries, on which the standard classification of topological insulators hinges, have not yet been properly defined for quantum walks. We introduce the key tool of time frames, i.e., we describe a DTQW by the ensemble of time-shifted unitary time-step operators belonging to the walk. This gives us a way to consistently define chiral symmetry (CS) for DTQW's. We show that CS can be ensured by using an ``inversion symmetric'' pulse sequence. For one-dimensional DTQW's with CS, we identify the bulk $\mathbb{Z}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\mathbb{Z}$ topological invariant that controls the number of topologically protected 0 and $\ensuremath{\pi}$ energy edge states at the interfaces between different domains, and give simple formulas for these invariants. We illustrate this bulk-boundary correspondence for DTQW's on the example of the ``4-step quantum walk,'' where tuning CS and particle-hole symmetry realizes edge states in various symmetry classes.

The bulk-edge correspondence for the split-step quantum walk on the one-dimensional integer lattice

Yasumichi Matsuzawa, Motoki Seki, Yohei Tanaka

Suzuki's split-step quantum walk on the one-dimensional integer lattice can be naturally viewed as a chirally symmetric quantum walk. Given the unitary time-evolution of such a chirally symmetric quantum walk, we can separately introduce well-defined indices for the eigenvalues $\pm 1.$ The bulk-edge correspondence for Suzuki's split-step quantum walk is twofold. Firstly, we show that the multiplicities of the eigenvalues $\pm 1$ coincide with the absolute values of the associated indices. Note that this can be viewed as the symmetry protection of bound states, and that the indices we consider are robust in the sense that these depend only on the asymptotic behaviour of the parameters of the given model. Secondly, we show that that such bound states exhibit exponential decay at spatial infinity.

The Witten index for one-dimensional split-step quantum walks under the non-Fredholm condition

Yasumichi Matsuzawa, Akito Suzuki, Yohei Tanaka +2 more

It is recently shown that a split-step quantum walk possesses a chiral symmetry, and that a certain well-defined index can be naturally assigned to it. The index is a well-defined Fredholm index if and only if the associated unitary time-evolution operator has spectral gaps at both [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] In this paper, we extend the existing index formula for the Fredholm case to encompass the non-Fredholm case (i.e. gapless case). We make use of a natural extension of the Fredholm index to the non-Fredholm case, known as the Witten index. The aim of this paper is to fully classify the Witten index of the split-step quantum walk by employing the spectral shift function for a rank one perturbation of a fourth-order difference operator. It is also shown in this paper that the Witten index can take half-integer values in the non-Fredholm case.

Translation invariant quantum walks with discrete symmetries

Christoph Stahl

Quantum walks are discrete-time evolutions of single particles on lattices that transfer the concept of classical random walks to quantum theory. Topological insulators are objects that promise symmetry-protected edge-states for transportation along the edge. Together, both subjects lay the foundation to a description of new materials that may be used e.g. for quantum computation or transport. In this thesis, we study topological phases in quantum walks. Given a representation of the discrete symmetry groups of the tenfold way, we develop a topological classification which distinguishes three symmetry indices whose values lie in the group of integers, the group of two elements, or the trivial group, depending on the symmetry type under consideration. The classification is applicable to quantum walks that are gapped at the symmetry-protected points. All symmetry indices are proven to be stable under norm-continuous perturbations, but only two of the three indices are invariant under compact non-continuous perturbations. These two indices describe the asymptotic behaviour far to the left and far to the right, respectively. The third index reflects whether a compact perturbation can be performed in arbitrarily small steps without violating the symmetries. Given two walks in the same phase (i.e. the symmetry indices coincide), we show that there is a norm-continuous path of walks in that phase that connects them. This renders the set of invariants we introduced complete. Our theory covers translation invariant bulks as well, where we prove that the third index vanishes and the left- and right indices add up to zero. Hence these systems are fully classified by the right index alone. Joining two bulks in different phases (one left, one right), we show that eigenvalues emerge in the gap (bulk-boundary correspondence), whose eigenfunctions decay exponentially away from the boundary. Since our theory does not demand translation invariance at all, these composed systems are still described by our general classification. Restricting to the translation invariant case, we express the symmetry index as a winding number of a loop in momentum space. Within this restricted class, we prove that our classification is complete as well.

Quantum Walks: Schur Functions Meet Symmetry Protected Topological Phases

Christopher Cedzich, T. Geib, F. Alberto Grünbaum +3 more

Abstract This paper uncovers and exploits a link between a central object in harmonic analysis, the so-called Schur functions, and the very hot topic of symmetry protected topological phases of quantum matter. This connection is found in the setting of quantum walks, i.e. quantum analogs of classical random walks. We prove that topological indices classifying symmetry protected topological phases of quantum walks are encoded by matrix Schur functions built out of the walk. This main result of the paper reduces the calculation of these topological indices to a linear algebra problem: calculating symmetry indices of finite-dimensional unitaries obtained by evaluating such matrix Schur functions at the symmetry protected points $$\pm 1$$ ± 1 . The Schur representation fully covers the complete set of symmetry indices for 1D quantum walks with a group of symmetries realizing any of the symmetry types of the tenfold way. The main advantage of the Schur approach is its validity in the absence of translation invariance, which allows us to go beyond standard Fourier methods, leading to the complete classification of non-translation invariant phases for typical examples.

Bulk-edge correspondence of one-dimensional quantum walks

C Cedzich, F A Grünbaum, C Stahl +3 more

Abstract We outline a theory of symmetry protected topological phases of one-dimensional quantum walks. We assume spectral gaps around the symmetry-distinguished points +1 and −1, in which only discrete eigenvalues are allowed. The phase classification by integer or binary indices extends the classification known for translation invariant systems in terms of their band structure. However, our theory requires no translation invariance whatsoever, and the indices we define in this general setting are invariant under arbitrary symmetric local perturbations, even those that cannot be continuously contracted to the identity. More precisely we define two indices for every walk, characterizing the behavior far to the right and far to the left, respectively. Their sum is a lower bound on the number of eigenstates at +1 and −1. For a translation invariant system the indices add up to zero, so one of them already characterizes the phase. By joining two bulk phases with different indices we get a walk in which the right and left indices no longer cancel, so the theory predicts bound states at +1 or −1. This is a rigorous statement of bulk-edge correspondence. The results also apply to the Hamiltonian case with a single gap at zero.
