Abstract

A key characteristic of quantum spin liquids(QSL) is the presence of fractional excitations related to their entanglement properties, yet experimental verification of their statistics is missing. For example, in the potential Kitaev spin liquid, RuCl3 experiments uncovered signs of fractional particles, though not their Fermi statistics. Here we employ Raman scattering to reveal the true nature of the magnetic excitations, using improved experimental methods and analysis to remove the influence of laser heating and thermal fluctuations. Via the energy loss and gain spectra, we extract the energy and temperature dependence of the Raman susceptibility to prove RuCl3's magnetic response is given by pair creation of fermionic excitations. Furthermore, by comparing with quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) results for the exact Kitaev limit, we are able to discern the energy and temperature range where additional interaction terms are important. Our results open new directions in QSL research by providing a new way to investigate fractional excitations and the importance of terms causing spinon confinement.

The range of non-Kitaev terms and fractional particles in α-RuCl3

Yiping Wang, Gavin B. Osterhoudt, Yao Tian +12 more

Abstract Significant efforts have focused on the magnetic excitations of relativistic Mott insulators, predicted to realize the Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL). This exactly solvable model involves a highly entangled state resulting from bond-dependent Ising interactions that produce excitations which are non-local in terms of spin flips. A key challenge in real materials is identifying the relative size of the non-Kitaev terms and their role in the emergence or suppression of fractional excitations. Here, we identify the energy and temperature boundaries of non-Kitaev interactions by direct comparison of the Raman susceptibility of α -RuCl 3 with quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) results for the Kitaev QSL. Moreover, we further confirm the fractional nature of the magnetic excitations, which is given by creating a pair of fermionic quasiparticles. Interestingly, this fermionic response remains valid in the non-Kitaev range. Our results and focus on the use of the Raman susceptibility provide a stringent new test for future theoretical and experimental studies of QSLs.

Evidence for Magnetic Fractional Excitations in a Kitaev Quantum-Spin-Liquid Candidate α-RuCl3

Kejing Ran, Jinghui Wang, Song Bao +12 more

It is known that α-RuCl3 has been studied extensively because of its proximity to the Kitaev quantum-spin-liquid (QSL) phase and the possibility of approaching it by tuning the competing interactions. Here we present the first polarized inelastic neutron scattering study on α-RuCl3 single crystals to explore the scattering continuum around the Γ point at the Brillouin zone center, which was hypothesized to be resulting from the Kitaev QSL state but without concrete evidence. With polarization analyses, we find that, while the spin-wave excitations around the M point vanish above the transition temperature T N, the pure magnetic continuous excitations around the Γ point are robust against temperature. Furthermore, by calculating the dynamical spin-spin correlation function using the cluster perturbation theory, we derive magnetic dispersion spectra based on the K–Γ model, which involves with a ferromagnetic Kitaev interaction of –7.2 meV and an off-diagonal interaction of 5.6 meV. We find this model can reproduce not only the spin-wave excitation spectra around the M point, but also the non-spin-wave continuous magnetic excitations around the Γ point. These results provide evidence for the existence of fractional excitations around the Γ point originating from the Kitaev QSL state, and further support the validity of the K–Γ model as the effective minimal spin model to describe α-RuCl3.

Probing signatures of fractionalization in the candidate quantum spin liquid Cu2IrO3 via anomalous Raman scattering

Srishti Pal, Arnab Seth, Piyush Sakrikar +5 more

Long-range entanglement in quantum spin liquids (QSLs) leads to novel low-energy excitations with fractionalized quantum numbers and (in two dimensions) statistics. Experimental detection and manipulation of these excitations present a challenge particularly in view of diverse candidate magnets. A promising probe of fractionalization is their coupling to phonons. Here, we present Raman scattering results for the $S=1/2$ honeycomb iridate ${\mathrm{Cu}}_{2}{\mathrm{IrO}}_{3}$, a candidate Kitaev QSL with fractionalized Majorana fermions and Ising flux excitations. We observe anomalous low-temperature frequency shift and linewidth broadening of the Raman intensities in addition to a broad magnetic continuum, both of which, as we derive, are naturally attributed to the phonon decaying into itinerant Majoranas. The dynamic Raman susceptibility marks a crossover from the QSL to a thermal paramagnet at $\ensuremath{\sim}120$ K. The phonon anomalies below this temperature demonstrate a strong phonon-Majorana coupling. These results provide evidence of spin fractionalization in ${\mathrm{Cu}}_{2}{\mathrm{IrO}}_{3}$.

Neutron scattering in the proximate quantum spin liquid alpha-RuCl3

A. Banerjee, Jian Yan, J. Knolle +7 more

The Kitaev quantum spin liquid (KQSL) is an exotic emergent state of matter exhibiting Majorana fermion and gauge flux excitations. The magnetic insulator alpha-RuCl3 is thought to realize a proximate KQSL. We used neutron scattering on single crystals of alpha-RuCl3 to reconstruct dynamical correlations in energy-momentum space. We discovered highly unusual signals, including a column of scattering over a large energy interval around the Brillouin zone center, which is very stable with temperature. This finding is consistent with scattering from the Majorana excitations of a KQSL. Other, more delicate experimental features can be transparently associated with perturbations to an ideal model. Our results encourage further study of this prototypical material and may open a window into investigating emergent magnetic Majorana fermions in correlated materials.

Thermodynamic evidence of fractionalized excitations in α−RuCl3

Sebastian Widmann, V. Tsurkan, Danil Prishchenko +3 more

In Kitaev spin liquids, $S$ = \textonehalf{} quantum spins on a honeycomb lattice with bond-dependent interactions fractionalize into Majorana fermions. Fingerprints of these fractionalized excitations can be detected via thermodynamic measurements. Here, the authors perform detailed heat capacity experiments on the spin-liquid candidate $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-RuCl${}_{3}$ as function of temperature and magnetic field. To estimate the intrinsic phonon contribution, they measure the nonmagnetic reference compound RhCl${}_{3}$ and perform $a\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}b$ $i\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}n\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}i\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}t\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}i\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}o$ phonon calculations. Measurements and analysis provide experimental evidence of fractionalized excitations in good agreement with theoretical predictions.
