Abstract

We report on our systematic attempts at finding local interactions for which the lowest-Landau-level projected composite-fermion wave functions are the unique zero energy ground states. For this purpose, we study in detail the simplest nontrivial system beyond the Laughlin states, namely, bosons at filling factor $\ensuremath{\nu}=2/3$, and identify local constraints among clusters of particles in the ground state. By explicit calculation, we show that no Hamiltonian up to (and including) four-particle interactions produces this state as the exact ground state and speculate that this remains true even when interaction terms involving a greater number of particles are included. Surprisingly, we can identify an interaction, which imposes an energetic penalty for a specific entangled configuration of four particles with relative angular momentum of $6\ensuremath{\hbar}$, that produces a unique zero energy solution (as we have confirmed for up to 12 particles). This state, referred to as the $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ state, is not identical to the projected composite-fermion state, but the following facts suggest that the two might be topologically equivalent: the two states have a high overlap, they have the same root partition, the quantum numbers for their neutral excitations are identical, and the quantum numbers for the quasiparticle excitations also match. On the quasihole side, we find that even though the quantum numbers of the lowest energy states agree with the prediction from the composite-fermion theory, these states are not separated from the others by a clearly identifiable gap. This prevents us from making a conclusive claim regarding the topological equivalence of the $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ state and the composite-fermion state. Our study illustrates how new candidate states can be identified from constraining selected many-particle configurations and it would be interesting to pursue their topological classification.

Candidate local parent Hamiltonian for the 3/7 fractional quantum Hall effect

Koji Kudo, Anirban Sharma, G. J. Sreejith +1 more

Although a parent Hamiltonian for the Laughlin $1/3$ wave function has been long known in terms of the Haldane pseudopotentials, no parent Hamiltonians are known for the lowest-Landau-level projected wave functions of the composite fermion theory at $n/(2n+1)$ with $n\ensuremath{\ge}2$. If one takes the two lowest Landau levels to be degenerate, the Trugman-Kivelson interaction produces the unprojected 2/5 wave function as the unique zero energy solution. If the lowest three Landau levels are assumed to be degenerate, the Trugman-Kivelson interaction produces a large number of zero energy states at $\ensuremath{\nu}=3/7$. We propose that adding an appropriately constructed three-body interaction yields the unprojected $3/7$ wave function as the unique zero energy solution and report extensive exact diagonalization studies that provide strong support to this proposal.

Quantum Hall effect of two-component bosons at fractional and integral fillings

Ying-Hai Wu, Jainendra K. Jain

We investigate the feasibility of many candidate quantum Hall states for two-component bosons in the lowest Landau level. We identify interactions for which spin-singlet incompressible states occur at filling factors $\ensuremath{\nu}=2/3$, $4/5$, and $4/3$, and partially spin-polarized states at filling factors $3/4$ and $3/2$, where ``spin'' serves as a generic label for the two components. We study ground states, excitations, edge states, and entanglement spectrum for systems with up to 16 bosons and construct explicit trial wave functions to clarify the underlying physics. The composite fermion theory very accurately describes the ground states as well as excitations at $\ensuremath{\nu}=2/3$, $4/5$, and $3/4$, although it is less satisfactory for the $\ensuremath{\nu}=3/2$ state. For $\ensuremath{\nu}=4/3$ a ``non-Abelian spin-singlet'' state, which is the exact ground state of a three-body contact interaction, has been proposed to occur even for a two-body contact interaction; our trial wave functions are very accurate for the excitations of the three-body interaction, but they do not describe the excitations of the two-body interaction very well. Instead, we find that the $\ensuremath{\nu}=4/3$ state is more likely to be a spin-singlet state of reverse-flux-attached composite fermions at filling ${\ensuremath{\nu}}^{*}=4$. We also consider incompressible states at integral filling factors $\ensuremath{\nu}=1$ and 2. The incompressible state at $\ensuremath{\nu}=1$ is shown to be well described by the parton-based Jain spin-singlet wave function, and the incompressible state at $\ensuremath{\nu}=2$ as the spin-singlet state of reverse-flux-attached composite fermions at ${\ensuremath{\nu}}^{*}=2$, which provides an example of the bosonic integer topological phase.

Generalization of Laughlin’s theory for the fractional quantum Hall effect

Sudhansu S. Mandal

Motivated by the structure of the quasiparticle wavefunction in the composite fermion (CF) theory for fractional quantum Hall filling factor [Formula: see text] (m odd), I consider a suitable quasiparticle operator in differential form, as a modified form of Laughlin's quasiparticle operator, that reproduces quasiparticle wave function as predicted in the CF theory, without a priori assumption of the presence of CFs. I further consider the conjugate of this operator as quasihole operator for obtaining a novel quasihole wave function for 1/m state. Each of these wave functions is interpreted as expelling an electron into a different Hilbert subspace from the original Hilbert space of the Laughlin condensate while still maintaining its correlation (although changed) with the electrons in the condensate such that the expelled electron behaves as a CF with respect to the electrons in the condensate. With this interpretation, I show that the ground state wavefunctions for general states at filling fractions [Formula: see text], respectively, can be constructed as coherent superposition of n coupled Laughlin condensates and their 'conjugates', formed at different Hilbert subspaces. The corresponding wave functions, specially surprising for [Formula: see text] sequence of states, are identical with those proposed in the theory of noninteracting CFs. The states which were considered as fractional quantum Hall effect of interacting CFs, can also be treated in the same footing as for the prominent sequences of states describing as the coupled condensates among which one is a non-Laughlin condensate in a different Hilbert subspace. Further, I predict that the half filling of the lowest Landau level is a quantum critical point for phase transition between two topologically distinct phases each corresponding to a family of states: one consists of large number of coupled Laughlin condensates of filling factor 1/3 and the other corresponds to large number of coupled conjugate Laughlin condensates of filling factor 1, which may be distinguished, respectively, by the absence and presence of upstream edge modes.

Elementary excitations in fractional quantum Hall effect from classical constraints

Bo Yang, Ajit Coimbatore Balram

Abstract Classical constraints on the reduced density matrix of quantum fluids in a single Landau level termed as local exclusion conditions (LECs) (Yang 2019 Phys. Rev. B 100 241302), have recently been shown to characterize the ground state of many fractional quantum Hall (FQH) phases. In this work, we extend the LEC construction to build the elementary excitations, namely quasiholes and quasielectrons, of these FQH phases. In particular, we elucidate the quasihole counting, categorize various types of quasielectrons, and construct their microscopic wave functions. Our extensive numerical calculations indicate that the undressed quasielectron excitations of the Laughlin state obtained from LECs are topologically equivalent to those obtained from the composite fermion theory. Intriguingly, the LEC construction unveils interesting connections between different FQH phases and offers a novel perspective on exotic states such as the Gaffnian and the Fibonacci state.

Incompressible states of the interacting composite fermions in negative effective magnetic fields at ν=4/13,5/17 , and 3/10

Sutirtha Mukherjee, Sudhansu S. Mandal

By developing an algorithm for evaluating the basis states for the composite fermions with negative effective magnetic field, we perform the composite-fermion-diagonalization study for the fully spin-polarized fractional quantum Hall states at the filling factors $\ensuremath{\nu}=3/10$, 4/13, and 5/17 in the range $2/7<\ensuremath{\nu}<1/3$. These observed states correspond to a partially filled second effective Landau level, for the composite fermions carrying four vortices, with filling factor $\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}=1/2$, 1/3, and 2/3, respectively, analogous to the previously studied states of composite fermions with two attached vortices in the range $1/3<\ensuremath{\nu}<2/5$. We show that the character of these states in the range $2/7<\ensuremath{\nu}<1/3$ replicates the same for the states in the range $1/3<\ensuremath{\nu}<2/5$ having identical $\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$: chiral $p$-wave pairing with an anti-Pfaffian correlation of composite fermions carrying six quantized vortices produces an incompressible state at $\ensuremath{\nu}=3/10$; an unconventional interaction between composite fermions, resulting from the suppression of fermion pairs with relative angular momentum three and producing the fractional quantum Hall effect of composite fermions in the second effective Landau level with $\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}=1/3$ and its particle-hole conjugate filling factor 2/3, reproduces incompressible states at $4/13$ and $5/17$ filling factors. We further estimate the thermodynamic limit of the ground-state energies and calculate the lowest energy gap for the neutral collective excitations of these states.
