Abstract

We study quasiparticle scattering effects on the dynamics of a homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate of ultracold atoms coupled to a single mode of an optical cavity. The relevant excitations, which are polaritonlike mixed excitations of photonic and atomic density-wave modes, are identified. All the first-order correlation functions are presented by means of the Keldysh Green's function technique. Beyond confirming the existence of the resonant enhancement of Beliaev damping, we find a very structured spectrum of fluctuations. There is a spectral hole burning at half of the recoil frequency reflecting the singularity of the Beliaev scattering process. The effects of the photon-loss dissipation channel and that of the Beliaev damping due to atom-atom collisions can be well separated. We show that the Beliaev process does not influence the properties of the self-organization criticality.

Damping of quasiparticles in a Bose-Einstein condensate coupled to an optical cavity

Gábor Kónya, Gergely Szirmai, P. Domokos

We present a general theory for calculating the damping rate of elementary density-wave excitations in a Bose-Einstein condensate strongly coupled to a single radiation field mode of an optical cavity. Thereby we give a detailed derivation of the huge resonant enhancement in the Beliaev damping of a density-wave mode, predicted recently by K\'onya et al. [Phys. Rev. A 89, 051601(R) (2014)]. The given density-wave mode constitutes the polaritonlike soft mode of the self-organization phase transition. The resonant enhancement takes place, in both the normal and the ordered phases, outside the critical region. We show that the large damping rate is accompanied by a significant frequency shift of this polariton mode. Going beyond the Born-Markov approximation and determining the poles of the retarded Green's function of the polariton, we reveal a strong coupling between the polariton and a collective mode in the phonon bath formed by the other density-wave modes.

Beliaev Damping of Quasiparticles in a Bose-Einstein Condensate

Nadav Y. Katz, Jeff Steinhauer, Roee Ozeri +1 more

We report a measurement of the suppression of collisions of quasiparticles with ground state atoms within a Bose-Einstein condensate at low momentum. These collisions correspond to Beliaev damping of the excitations, in the previously unexplored regime of the continuous quasiparticle energy spectrum. We use a hydrodynamic simulation of the expansion dynamics, with the Beliaev damping cross section, in order to confirm the assumptions of our analysis.

Nonlinear effects of atomic collisions on the optomechanical properties of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical cavity

Ali Dalafi, M. H. Naderi, M. Soltanolkotabi +1 more

In this paper, we have investigated theoretically the influence of atomic collisions on the behavior of a one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate inside a driven optical cavity. We develop the discrete-mode approximation for the condensate taking into account the interband transitions due to the $s$-wave scattering interaction. We show that in the Bogoliubov approximation the atom-atom interaction shifts the energies of the excited modes and also plays the role of an optical parametric amplifier for the Bogoliubov side mode which can affect its normal-mode splitting behavior. On the other hand due to the atomic collisions the resonance frequency of the cavity is shifted which leads to the decrease of the number of cavity photons and the depletion of the Bogoliubov mode. Besides, it reduces the effective atom-photon coupling parameter which consequently leads to the decrease of the entanglement between the Bogoliubov mode and the optical field.

Photonic tuning of Beliaev damping in a superfluid

Gábor Kónya, Gergely Szirmai, D. Nagy +1 more

We show that the Beliaev damping of elementary excitations in a homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate can undergo resonant enhancement by several orders of magnitude when the superfluid is interacting with a far-detuned radiation field of an optical resonator. The photonic tuning of the quasiparticle damping can be controlled by an external laser drive.

Cavity-Mediated Near-Critical Dissipative Dynamics of a Driven Condensate

Manas Kulkarni, Barış Öztop, Hakan E. Türeci

We investigate the near-critical dynamics of atomic density fluctuations in the nonequilibrium self-organization transition of an optically driven quantum gas coupled to a single mode of a cavity. In this system cavity-mediated long-range interactions between atoms, tunable by the drive strength, lead to softening of an excitation mode recently observed in experiments. This phenomenon has previously been studied within a two-mode approximation for the collective motional degrees of freedom of the atomic condensate, which results in an effective open-system Dicke model. Here, including the full spectrum of atomic modes we find a finite lifetime for a rotonlike mode in the Bogoliubov excitation spectrum that is strongly pump dependent. The corresponding decay rate and critical exponents for the phase transition are calculated explaining the nonmonotonic pump-dependent atomic damping rate observed in recent experiments. We compute the near-critical behavior of the intracavity field fluctuations that has been previously shown to be enhanced with respect to the equilibrium Dicke model in a two-mode approximation. We highlight the role of the finite size of the system in the suppression of it below the expectations of the open Dicke model.

Three-Wave Mixing of Bogoliubov Quasiparticles in a Bose-Einstein Condensate

Roee Ozeri, Nadav Y. Katz, Jeff Steinhauer +2 more

A dressed basis is used to calculate the dynamics of three-wave mixing between Bogoliubov quasiparticles in a Bose condensate. Because of the observed oscillations between different momentum modes, an energy splitting, analogous to the optical Mollow triplet, appears in the Beliaev damping spectrum of the excitations from the oscillating modes.
