Entanglement entropy and Wilson loop

Abstract

We study both entanglement and the Rényi entropies for the 2 dimensional massless Dirac fermions in the presence of topological Wilson loops, which are qualitatively different from those with a chemical potential and a current source. In the language of Zn orbifold theories, the Wilson loop is interpreted as an electric operator while the orbifold twist operator as a magnetic operator. Topological transitions for the generalized entropies are driven by both electric and magnetic parameters via the restriction on the operator's conformal weight. By adapting different normalizations for different topological sectors, we achieve two goals: entanglement entropy can be obtained with a smooth limit from the generalized Rényi entropy, and the entropies are continuous across the different topological sectors that include general Wilson loops winding sectors. We provide exact results for the entropies in infinite space, which depend only on the topological Wilson loops, independent of the chemical potential and the current source.

QFT entanglement entropy, 2D fermion and gauge fields

Entanglement and the Rényi entropies for Dirac fermions on 2 dimensional torus in the presence of chemical potential, current source, and topological Wilson loop are unified in a single framework by exhausting all the ingredients of the electromagnetic vertex operators of Zn orbifold conformal field theory. We employ different normalizations for different topological sectors to organize various topological phase transitions in the context of entanglement entropy. Pictorial representations for the topological transitions are given for the n=2 Rényi entropy. Our analytic computations reveal numerous novelties and provide resolutions for existing issues. We have settled to provide non-singular entanglement entropies that are also continuous across the topological sectors. Surprisingly, in infinite space, these entropies become exact and depend only on the Wilson loop. On a circle, we resolve to find the entropies subtly depend on the chemical potential at zero temperature, which is useful for probing the ground state energy levels of quantum systems.

Entanglement Entropy, Chemical Potential, Current Source, and Wilson Loop

Bom Soo Kim

We construct and analytically compute entanglement and the Rényi entropies of Dirac fermions on a 2 dimensional torus in the presence of background chemical potential, current source and Wilson loop, by employing correlation functions of the electromagnetic vertex operators of $\mathbb{Z}_n$ orbifold theory. The entropies reveal numerous novelties. They probe the energy levels of compact fermions through the chemical potential, demonstrate interference phenomena with the current source being `beat frequency,' and experience topological phase transitions by dialing the Wilson loop, in the low temperature limit. In the large radius limit, they depend only on the Wilson loop via topological transitions, which are tightly linked to conformal dimension of the electromagnetic operators.

Free fermion cyclic/symmetric orbifold CFTs and entanglement entropy

Tadashi Takayanagi, Takashi Tsuda

Abstract In this paper we study the properties of two-dimensional CFTs defined by cyclic and symmetric orbifolds of free Dirac fermions, especially by focusing on the partition function and entanglement entropy. Via the bosonization, we construct the twist operators which glue two complex planes to calculate the partition function of ℤ2 orbifold CFT on a torus. We also find an expression of ℤN cyclic orbifold in terms of Hecke operators, which provides an explicit relation between the partition functions of cyclic orbifolds and those of symmetric ones. We compute the entanglement entropy and Renyi entropy in cyclic orbifolds on a circle both for finite temperature states and for time-dependent states under quantum quenches. We find that the replica method calculation is highly non-trivial and new because of the contributions from replicas with different boundary conditions. We find the full expression for the ℤ2 orbifold and show that the periodicity gets doubled. Finally, we discuss extensions of our results on entanglement entropy to symmetric orbifold CFTs and make a heuristic argument towards holographic CFTs.

Bose–Fermi duality and entanglement entropies

Matthew Headrick, Albion Lawrence, Matthew M. Roberts

Entanglement (Rényi) entropies of spatial regions are a useful tool for characterizing the ground states of quantum field theories. In this paper we investigate the extent to which these are universal quantities for a given theory, and to which they distinguish different theories, by comparing the entanglement spectra of the massless Dirac fermion and the compact free boson in two dimensions. We show that the calculation of Rényi entropies via the replica trick for any orbifold theory includes a sum over orbifold twists on all cycles. In a modular-invariant theory of fermions, this amounts to a sum over spin structures. The result is that the Rényi entropies respect the standard Bose–Fermi duality. Next, we investigate the entanglement spectrum for the Dirac fermion without a sum over spin structures, and for the compact boson at the self-dual radius. These are not equivalent theories; nonetheless, we find that (1) their second Rényi entropies agree for any number of intervals, (2) their full entanglement spectra agree for two intervals, and (3) the spectrum generically disagrees otherwise. These results follow from the equality of the partition functions of the two theories on any Riemann surface with imaginary period matrix. We also exhibit a map between the operators of the theories that preserves scaling dimensions (but not spins), as well as OPEs and correlators of operators placed on the real line. All of these coincidences can be traced to the fact that the momentum lattice for the bosonized fermion is related to that of the self-dual boson by a 45° rotation that mixes left- and right-movers.

Probing topological order with Rényi entropy

Gábor B. Halász, Alioscia Hamma

We present an analytical study of the quantum phase transition between the topologically ordered toric-code-model ground state and the disordered spin-polarized state. The phase transition is induced by applying an external magnetic field, and the variation in topological order is detected via two nonlocal quantities: the Wilson loop and the topological R\'enyi entropy of order 2. By exploiting an equivalence with the transverse-field Ising model and considering two different variants of the problem, we investigate the field dependence of these quantities by means of an exact treatment in the exactly solvable variant and complementary perturbation theories around the limits of zero and infinite fields in both variants. We find strong evidence that the phase transition point between topological order and disorder is marked by a discontinuity in the topological R\'enyi entropy and that the two phases around the phase transition point are characterized by its different constant values. Our results therefore indicate that the topological R\'enyi entropy is a proper topological invariant: its allowed values are discrete and can be used to distinguish between different phases of matter.
