Abstract

We consider a recent proposal for a physical realization of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model in the zeroth-Landau-level sector of an irregularly shaped graphene flake. We study in detail charge transport signatures of the unique non-Fermi-liquid state of such a quantum dot coupled to noninteracting leads. The properties of this setup depend essentially on the ratio $p$ between the number of transverse modes in the lead $M$ and the number of the fermion degrees of freedom $N$ on the SYK dot. This ratio can be tuned via the magnetic field applied to the dot. Our proposed setup gives access to the nontrivial conformal-invariant regime associated with the SYK model as well as a more conventional Fermi-liquid regime via tuning the field. The dimensionless linear-response conductance acquires distinct $\sqrt{p}$ and $1/\sqrt{p}$ dependencies for the two phases, respectively, in the low-temperature limit, with a universal jump at the transition. We find that corrections scale linearly and quadratically in either temperature or frequency on the two sides of the transition. In the weak-tunneling regime, we find differential conductance proportional to the inverse square root of the applied voltage bias $U$. This dependence is replaced by a conventional Ohmic behavior with constant conductance proportional to $1/\sqrt{T}$ for bias energy $eU$ smaller than temperature scale ${k}_{B}T$. We also describe the out-of-equilibrium current-bias characteristics and discuss various crossovers between the limiting behaviors mentioned above.

Charge transport in a graphene flake realization of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

Oguzhan Can

We address the transport properties of a mesoscopic realization of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model which is an exactly solvable system of interacting spinless fermions connected to the black hole physics through the holographic principle. Starting with a recent proposal for simulating the SYK model in a graphene flake in an external magnetic field and extending it by considering leads attached to it, we model a realistic transport experiment and calculate directly measurable quantities featuring non-Fermi liquid signatures of the SYK physics. We show that the graphene flake realization is robust in the presence of leads and that measuring the tunneling current across the leads one can experimentally observe a non-Fermi liquid - Fermi liquid transition by tuning the external magnetic field threading the flake. After establishing the transport signatures of the SYK model near equilibrium using linear response framework, we then derive a formula to extend our results for tunneling current using Keldysh formalism to explore the effects of finite bias voltage across the leads, going beyond equilibrium.

Noise signatures of a charged Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev dot in mesoscopic transport

Andrei I. Pavlov, Mikhail N. Kiselev

We investigate quantum noise in a mesoscopic quantum dot serving as a realization of the charged Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model weakly coupled to a fermionic lead via a tunnel contact. We find noise signatures under voltage and temperature biases that can serve as clear markers of the SYK physics in experiments with related setups. We develop a linear response theory that treats all types of noise on the same footing and generalizes a concept of transport coefficients for charge and heat currents, as well as relations between them, to equilibrium noise power. Within this theory, we find characteristic scaling of the with temperature in all regimes that can be relevant for experimental realizations of the SYK dots, find a set of universal constants, with their values being unique to the SYK physics, that connect these coefficients, and characterize noise manifestations of the Coulomb blockade. Beyond SYK systems, these results may serve as a general framework for identification of non-Fermi-liquid signatures in mesoscopic transport and provide additional observables for experiments on thermoelectric phenomena.

Low-high voltage duality in tunneling spectroscopy of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

N. V. Gnezdilov, Jimmy A. Hutasoit, C. W. J. Beenakker

The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model describes a strongly correlated metal with all-to-all random interactions (average strength $J$) between $N$ fermions (complex Dirac fermions or real Majorana fermions). In the large-$N$ limit a conformal symmetry emerges that renders the model exactly soluble. Here we study how the non-Fermi-liquid behavior of the closed system in equilibrium manifests itself in an open system out of equilibrium. We calculate the current-voltage characteristic of a quantum dot, described by the complex-valued SYK model, coupled to a voltage source via a single-channel metallic lead (coupling strength $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$). A one-parameter scaling law appears in the large-$N$ conformal regime, where the differential conductance $G=dI/dV$ depends on the applied voltage only through the dimensionless combination $\ensuremath{\xi}=eVJ/{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}}^{2}$. Low and high voltages are related by the duality $G(\ensuremath{\xi})=G(\ensuremath{\pi}/\ensuremath{\xi})$. This provides for an unambiguous signature of the conformal symmetry in tunneling spectroscopy.

Transport properties and thermopower of the spinful Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev dot

Daniele Morotti, Marco Uguccioni, Luca Dell’Anna

We study the electric and thermoelectric transport through a spinful complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) quantum dot coupled to metallic leads, forming a N-SYK-N junction, by the Keldysh field theory approach. Unlike traditional equilibrium approaches, our formulation treats the system as an open, interacting quantum conductor under non-equilibrium conditions, without resorting to the replica trick. Starting from the exact Keldysh-Dyson equations, we derive analytical results for the tunneling and zero-temperature limits and perform a numerical analysis in the linear-response regime. We characterize the dependence of conductance, thermoelectric coefficient, and Seebeck effect on the particle-hole asymmetry parameter and coupling strength to the leads. Our results reveal distinctive non-Fermi liquid signatures of the SYK model in transport properties and identify coupling regimes where thermoelectric effects are enhanced, suggesting experimentally accessible fingerprints of SYK physics in mesoscopic systems.

Quantum tunneling dynamics in complex SYK model quenched-coupled to a cool-bath

Yevheniia Cheipesh, Andrei I. Pavlov, V. Ohanesjan +2 more

The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model describes interacting fermionic zero modes in zero spatial dimensions, e.g. quantum dot, with interactions strong enough to completely washout quasiparticle excitations in the infrared. In this note, we consider the complex-valued SYK model at temperature $T$ coupled to a zero temperature reservoir by a quench. We find out that the tunneling current dynamics reveals a way to distinguish the SYK non-Fermi liquid (nFL) initial state of the subsystem from the disordered Fermi liquid. Temperature dependent contribution to the current's half-life scales linearly in $T$ at low temperatures for the SYK nFl state, while for the Fermi liquid it scales as $T^2$. This provides a characteristic signature of the SYK non-Fermi liquid in a non-equilibrium measurement.

Quantum tunneling dynamics in a complex-valued Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model quench-coupled to a cool bath

The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model describes interacting fermionic zero modes in zero spatial dimensions, e.g., quantum dot, with interactions strong enough to completely washout quasiparticle excitations in the infrared. In this paper we consider the complex-valued SYK model at initial temperature $T$ and chemical potential $\ensuremath{\mu}$ coupled to a large reservoir by a quench at time $t=0$. The reservoir is kept at zero temperature and charge neutrality. We find that the dynamics of the discharging process of the SYK quantum dot reveals a distinctive characteristic of the SYK non-Fermi liquid (nFl) state. In particular, we focus on the tunneling current induced by the quench. We show that the temperature dependent contribution to the current's half-life scales linearly in $T$ at low temperatures for the SYK nFl state, while for the Fermi liquid it scales as ${T}^{2}$.
