Abstract

We report on an experiment in which the fluorescence decay time of 5P levels of Rb atoms in a coated vapor cell exceeds several of milliseconds, many orders of magnitude longer than normal decay time of excited of rubidium atoms. We found that this peculiarly long - term decay is not exponential and can only be observed in a high quality coated cell with a long lifetime of optical pumped atoms on atomic ground-state sublevels. A numerical simulation based on a complete density matrix is presented. It supports the population pumping process through the ground-state sublevels of Rb atoms as the most plausible mechanism for the observed phenomenon and it consistently demonstrates all the relevant features of the experiment. The investigation can be used, for example, to explore the quality of a various anti-relaxation coatings used for the resonant cells.

Effects of size and dimension in optic relaxation in Rb vapor

Abstract We report on an experiment in which the fluorescence decay time of 5P levels of Rb atoms in a coated vapor cell exceeds several of milliseconds that many orders of magnitude longer than normal decay time of excited of rubidium atoms. This effect has been observed by using the pump laser with fixing frequency and the periodically scan the probing laser frequency of which overlap all Rb hyperfine linens of 5P-5S transition. Long time fluorescence decay take place in wide part of the spherical high quality coated cell. In cylindrical part of the cell or in uncoated cell the long time fluorescence decay was disappeared.

Optical Relaxation Phenomena in a Rubidium Vapor Cell with an Antirelaxation Coating under Bichromatic Laser Irradiation

Sergey Nikitich Atutov, V. A. Sorokin

Abstract The excitation of long-term fluorescence by variously configured beams of bichromatic laser radiation in a rubidium vapor cell has been studied. From experiments it follows that long-term fluorescence arises only if atoms directly interact both with the pumping beam and with the probing beam tuned in resonance with a three-level Λ-scheme formed by transitions from 52P1/2 to the sublevels of the ground state 52S1/2 F = 3 and 52S1/2 F = 2. It has been shown that the spatial alignment of the pumping and probing beams is not obligatory for this feature of fluorescence to occur. This substantiates the idea that long-term fluorescence is related to the long-lived polarized state of rubidium atoms, which persists even after about 40 collisions with the ceresin-coated walls of the cell.

Determination of the atomic density of rubidium-87

Meng Zhao, Kai Zhang, L. Q. Chen

Atomic density is a basic and important parameter in quantum optics, nonlinear optics, and precision measurement. In the past few decades, several methods have been used to measure atomic density, such as thermionic effect, optical absorption, and resonance fluorescence. The main error of these experiments stemmed from depopulation of the energy level, self-absorption, and the broad bandwidth of the laser. Here we demonstrate the atomic density of 87 Rb vapor in paraffin coated cell between 297 K and 334 K mainly using fluorescence measurement. Optical pumping, anti-relaxation coating, and absorption compensation approaches are used to decrease measurement error. These measurement methods are suitable for vapor temperature at dozens of degrees. The fitting function for the experimental data of 87 Rb atomic density is given.

Transformation of the coherent population trapping resonance into enhanced fluorescence in a paraffin coated Rb vacuum cell

Elena T. Taskova, Emilia A. Alipieva, G. Todorov

The ultra-narrow resonances achieved in coherent spectroscopy of alkali atoms originate from the destruction of the laser-induced coherence in the ground state. An anti relaxation cell coating preserves the coherence created and, consequently, the resonance narrows by almost two orders of magnitude. Coherence resonances are used in magnetic field sensors, atomic clocks, quantum informatics, ets. In this work, we investigate the features of the CPT resonance on the D1 87 Rb line obtained in fluorescence in paraffin coated cells. The transformation from a black to a bright resonance is found to depend on the laser power and the experimental geometry.

Laser-Induced Population Changes of 5P and 5D Levels in Rubidium Vapor

Wang Shu-ying

Enhancement and reduction of the fluorescence intensity in Rb atomic vapor are observed. The reduction is due to a depopulation of the 5P - {3/2 } state upon illumination of a Rb vapor cell with light corresponding to the 5P - {3/2 }→5D - {5/2 } transition. Collisional transfer of the 5D - {5/2 } atoms to the 5D - {3/2 } state, followed by radiative decay to the 5P - {1/2 } state, creates an increase in the population of the 5P - {1/2 } state. The increase in the excited state population results in an increase in the fluorescence intensity of the 5P - {1/2 }→5S - {1/2 } transition. The laser-induced population changes are monitored by the decrease or increase of the corresponding fluorescence signals. Using the steady-state rate equations, the rate constants for the stimulated emission(i.e., 5D - {5/2 }→5P - {3/2 }) is 2.0×10 +8s + {-1 }. The cross section for the fine-structure changing collision(i.e., 5D - {5/2 }→5D - {3/2 }) is 6.4×10 + {-14 }cm +2.
