Abstract

The multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) postulates the existence of quantum circuits that renormalize entanglement in real space at different length scales. Chern insulators, however, cannot have scale-invariant discrete MERA circuits with a finite bond dimension. In this Letter, we show that the continuous MERA (cMERA), a modified version of MERA adapted for field theories, possesses a fixed point wave function with a nonzero Chern number. Additionally, it is well known that reversed MERA circuits can be used to prepare quantum states efficiently in time that scales logarithmically with the size of the system. However, state preparation via MERA typically requires the advent of a full-fledged universal quantum computer. In this Letter, we demonstrate that our cMERA circuit can potentially be realized in existing analog quantum computers, i.e., an ultracold atomic Fermi gas in an optical lattice with light-induced spin-orbit coupling.

Entanglement renormalization for weakly interacting fields

Jordan S. Cotler, M. Reza Mohammadi Mozaffar, Ali Mollabashi +1 more

We adapt the techniques of entanglement renormalization tensor networks to weakly interacting quantum field theories in the continuum. A key tool is ``quantum circuit perturbation theory,'' which enables us to systematically construct unitaries that map between wave functionals which are Gaussian with arbitrary perturbative corrections. As an application, we construct a local continuous multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz (cMERA) circuit that maps an unentangled scale-invariant state to the ground state of ${\ensuremath{\varphi}}^{4}$ theory to one loop. Our local cMERA circuit corresponds exactly to one-loop Wilsonian renormalization group (RG) flow on the spatial momentum modes. In other words, we establish that perturbative Wilsonian RG on spatial momentum modes can be equivalently recast as a local cMERA circuit in ${\ensuremath{\varphi}}^{4}$ theory and argue that this correspondence holds more generally. Our analysis also suggests useful numerical ans\"atze for cMERA in the nonperturbative regime.

Spacetime Symmetries and Conformal Data in the Continuous Multiscale Entanglement Renormalization Ansatz

Qicheng Hu, Guifré Vidal

The generalization of the multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) to continuous systems, or cMERA [Haegeman et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 100402 (2013)], is expected to become a powerful variational ansatz for the ground state of strongly interacting quantum field theories. In this Letter, we investigate, in the simpler context of Gaussian cMERA for free theories, the extent to which the cMERA state $|{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Psi}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}⟩$ with finite UV cutoff $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ can capture the spacetime symmetries of the ground state $|\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Psi}}⟩$. For a free boson conformal field theory (CFT) in $1+1$ dimensions, as a concrete example, we build a quasilocal unitary transformation $V$ that maps $|\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Psi}}⟩$ into $|{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Psi}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}⟩$ and show two main results. (i) Any spacetime symmetry of the ground state $|\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Psi}}⟩$ is also mapped by $V$ into a spacetime symmetry of the cMERA $|{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Psi}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}⟩$. However, while in the CFT, the stress-energy tensor ${T}_{\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{\nu}}(x)$ (in terms of which all the spacetime symmetry generators are expressed) is local, and the corresponding cMERA stress-energy tensor ${T}_{\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{\nu}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}(x)=V{T}_{\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{\nu}}(x){V}^{\ifmmode\dagger\else\textdagger\fi{}}$ is quasilocal. (ii) From the cMERA, we can extract quasilocal scaling operators ${O}_{\ensuremath{\alpha}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}(x)$ characterized by the exact same scaling dimensions ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}_{\ensuremath{\alpha}}$, conformal spins ${s}_{\ensuremath{\alpha}}$, operator product expansion coefficients ${C}_{\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{\gamma}}$, and central charge $c$ as the original CFT. Finally, we argue that these results should also apply to interacting theories.

Holographic entanglement renormalization of topological insulators

Xueda Wen, Gil Young Cho, Pedro L. S. Lopes +3 more

We study the real-space entanglement renormalization group flows of topological band insulators in (2+1) dimensions by using the continuum multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz (cMERA). Given the ground state of a Chern insulator, we construct and study its cMERA by paying attention, in particular, to how the bulk holographic geometry and the Berry curvature depend on the topological properties of the ground state. It is found that each state defined at different energy scale of cMERA carries a nonzero Berry flux, which is emanated from the UV layer of cMERA, and flows towards the IR. Hence, a topologically nontrivial UV state flows under the renormalization group to an IR state, which is also topologically nontrivial. On the other hand, we found that there is an obstruction to construct the exact ground state of a topological insulator with a topologically trivial IR state. That is, if we try to construct a cMERA for the ground state of a Chern insulator by taking a topologically trivial IR state, the resulting cMERA does not faithfully reproduce the exact ground state at all length scales.

Entanglement compression in scale space: From the multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz to matrix product operators

Karel Van Acoleyen, Andrew Hallam, Matthias Bal +3 more

The multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) provides a constructive algorithm for realizing wave functions that are inherently scale invariant. Unlike conformally invariant partition functions, however, the finite bond dimension $\ensuremath{\chi}$ of the MERA provides a cutoff in the fields that can be realized. In this paper, we demonstrate that this cutoff is equivalent to the one obtained when approximating a thermal state of a critical Hamiltonian with a matrix product operator (MPO) of finite bond dimension $\ensuremath{\chi}$. This is achieved by constructing an explicit mapping between the isometries of the MERA and the local tensors of the MPO. In terms of energy scales, our results show that a finite bond dimension MERA is equivalent to introducing both an infrared and an ultraviolet scale, characterizing relevant and irrelevant perturbations on the underlying conformal field theory.

Continuous entanglement renormalization on the circle

Ling-Yan Hung, Guifré Vidal

The continuous multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz (cMERA) is a variational class of states for quantum fields. As originally formulated, the cMERA applies to infinite systems only. In this paper we generalize the cMERA formalism to a finite circle, which we achieve by wrapping the action of the so-called entangler around the circle. This allows us to transform a cMERA on the line into a cMERA on the circle. In addition, in the case of a Gaussian cMERA for noninteracting quantum fields, the method of images allows us to prove the following result: If on the line a cMERA state is a good approximation to a ground state of a local quantum field theory (QFT) Hamiltonian, then (under mild assumptions on their correlation functions) the resulting cMERA on a circle is also a good approximation to the ground state of the same local QFT Hamiltonian on the circle.

Entanglement and correlations in the continuous multi-scale renormalization ansatz

Adrián Franco-Rubio, Guifré Vidal

We investigate the entanglement structure of the continuous multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (cMERA) [Haegeman et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 110, 100402 (2013)] for ground states of quantum field theories (QFTs). The cMERA, proposed as an extension to QFTs of the lattice MERA, is defined directly in the continuum but is nevertheless naturally equipped with a short-distance scale $1/\Lambda$ that acts as a UV regulator for quantum fluctuations. We consider the simplified setting of Gaussian cMERA for free QFTs, where explicit calculations can be performed. For relativistic free massless bosonic and fermionic QFTs in both 1+1 and 2+1 spacetime dimensions, we show that the cMERA state indeed displays no UV divergences in two-point correlation functions or entanglement entropy, in sharp contrast with the exact ground states.
