Influence of pump coherence on the quantum properties of spontaneous parametric down-conversion

Abstract

Abstract The correlation properties of the pump field in spontaneous parametric down-conversion are crucial in determining the degree of entanglement of generated signal and idler photons. We find theoretically that continuous-variable entanglement of the transverse positions and momenta of these photons can be achieved only if the coherence of the pump beam is sufficiently high. The positions of signal and idler photons are found to be correlated, even for an incoherent pump. However, the momenta of the signal and idler photons are not anti-correlated, even though transverse momentum is conserved.

Influence of pump coherence on the generation of position-momentum entanglement in optical parametric down-conversion

We examine experimentally how the degree of position-momentum entanglement of photon pairs depends on the transverse coherence of the pump beam that excites them in a process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion. Using spatially incoherent light from a light-emitting diode, we obtain strong position correlation of the photons, but we find that transverse momentum correlation, and thus entanglement, is entirely absent. When we continuously vary the degree of spatial coherence on the pump beam, we observe the emergence of stronger momentum correlations and entanglement. We present theoretical arguments that explain our experimental results. Our results shed light on entanglement generation and can be applied to control entanglement for quantum information applications.

Transverse coherence of photon pairs generated in spontaneous parametric down-conversion

Martin Hamar, Jan Peřina, Ondřej Haderka +1 more

Coherence properties of the down-converted beams generated in spontaneous parametric down-conversion are investigated in detail using an iCCD camera. Experimental results are compared with those from a theoretical model developed for pulsed pumping with a Gaussian transverse profile. The results allow us to tailor the shape of correlation area of the signal and idler photons using pump-field and crystal parameters. As an example, splitting of a correlation area caused by a two-peak pump-field spectrum is experimentally studied.

Boosting Entanglement Generation in Down-Conversion with Incoherent Illumination

Lucas Hutter, G. Lima, Stephen Patrick Walborn

Entangled photons produced by spontaneous parametric down-conversion have been of paramount importance for our current understanding of quantum mechanics and advances in quantum information. In this process, the quantum correlations of the down-converted photons are governed by the optical properties of the pump beam illuminating the nonlinear crystal. Extensively, the pump beam has been modeled by either coherent beams or by the well-known Gaussian-Schell model, which leads to the natural conclusion that a high degree of optical coherence is required for the generation of highly entangled states. Here, we show that when a novel class of partially coherent Gaussian pump beams is considered, a distinct type of quantum state can be generated for which the amount of entanglement increases inversely with the degree of coherence of the pump beam. This leads to highly incoherent yet highly entangled multiphoton states, which should have interesting consequences for photonic quantum information science.

Azimuthal correlation of photon pairs generated in spontaneous parametric down-conversion

Vygandas Jarutis, Saulius Juodkazis, Vygantas Mizeikis +1 more

Correlations between the entire conical spatial modes of signal and idler beams in a type II spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) under ultrashort pulse pumping are examined experimentally and theoretically. Statistical properties and theoretical analysis of ``path-entangled'' states formed using these beams suggest that the quantum state of SPDC photon pairs cannot be represented by a pure ensemble of identically prepared pairs.

Entanglement and conservation of orbital angular momentum in spontaneous parametric down-conversion

Stephen Patrick Walborn, A. N. de Oliveira, Rafael Santos Thebaldi +1 more

We show that the transfer of the plane-wave spectrum of the pump beam to the fourth-order transverse spatial correlation function of the two-photon field generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion leads to the conservation and entanglement of orbital angular momentum of light. By means of a simple experimental setup based on fourth-order (or two-photon) interferometry, we show that our theoretical model provides a good description for down-converted fields carrying orbital angular momentum.
