Abstract

We consider a two-state quantum walk on a line where after the first step an absorbing sink is placed at the origin. The probability of finding the walker at position $j$, conditioned on that it has not returned to the origin, is investigated in the asymptotic limit. We prove a limit theorem for the conditional probability distribution and show that it is given by the Konno's density function modified by a prefactor ensuring that the distribution vanishes at the origin. In addition, we discuss the relation to the problem of recurrence of a quantum walk and determine the P\'olya number. Our approach is based on path counting and the stationary phase approximation.

Quantum walk on a line with absorbing boundaries

Ammara Ammara, Václav Potoček, M. Štefaňák +1 more

Abstract Absorption of two-state coined quantum walks on a finite line with two sinks located at N and − N is investigated. Elaborating on the results of Konno et al (2003 J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 36 241), we derive closed formulas for the absorption probabilities at the boundaries in the limit of large system size N . Two limiting cases are considered, with the starting position k being independent of N , or kept at a constant distance δ from one of absorbers. In the first scenario, the absorption probability is determined only by the coin parameter and polar angle of the initial coin state decomposed into the eigenbasis of the coin operator. In the second case, a correction depending exponentially on δ is introduced. Finally, we perform an extensive numerical investigation for small system size N , showing excellent agreement between numerical and analytical results.

Limit theorems of a 3-state quantum walk and its application for discrete uniform measures

Takuya Machida

We present two long-time limit theorems of a 3-state quantum walk on the line when the walker starts from the origin. One is a limit measure which is obtained from the probability distribution of the walk at a long-time limit, and the other is a convergence in distribution for the walker’s position in a rescaled space by time. In addition, as an application of the walk, we obtain discrete uniform limit measures from the 3-state walk with a delocalized initial state.

Comfortable place for quantum walkers on finite path

Yoshihiro Anahara, Norio Konno, Hisashi Morioka +1 more

We consider the stationary state of a quantum walk on the finite path, where the sink and source are set at the left and right boundaries. The quantum coin is uniformly placed at every vertex of the path graph. At every time step, a new quantum walker penetrates into the internal from the left boundary and also some existing quantum walkers in the internal goes out to the sinks located in the left and right boundaries. The square modulus of the stationary state at each vertex is regarded as the comfortability for a quantum walker to this vertex in this paper. We show the weak convergence theorem for the scaled limit distribution of the comfortability in the limit of the length of the path.

Full revivals in 2D quantum walks

M. Štefaňák, Bálint Kollár, T. Kiss +1 more

Recurrence of a random walk is described by the Pólya number. For quantum walks, recurrence is understood as the return of the walker to the origin, rather than the full revival of its quantum state. Localization for two-dimensional quantum walks is known to exist in the sense of non-vanishing probability distribution in the asymptotic limit. We show, on the example of the 2D Grover walk, that one can exploit the effect of localization to construct stationary solutions. Moreover, we find full revivals of a quantum state with a period of two steps. We prove that there cannot be longer cycles for a four-state quantum walk. Stationary states and revivals result from interference, which has no counterpart in classical random walks.

A limit theorem for a 3-period time-dependent quantum walk

F. Alberto Grünbaum, Takuya Machida

We consider a discrete-time 2-state quantum walk on the line. The state of the quantum walker evolves according to a rule which is determined by a coin-flip operator and a position-shift operator. In this paper we take a 3-periodic time evolution as the rule. For such a quantum walk, we get a limit distribution which expresses the asymptotic behavior of the walker after a long time. The limit distribution is different from that of a time-independent quantum walk or a 2-period time-dependent quantum walk. We give some analytical results and then consider a number of variants of our model and indicate the result of simulations for these ones.
