Exactly Solvable BCS-Hubbard Model in Arbitrary Dimensions

Zewei Chen, Xiaohui Li, Tai Kai Ng

We introduce in this Letter an exact solvable BCS-Hubbard model in arbitrary dimensions. The model describes a p-wave BCS superconductor with equal spin pairing moving on a bipartite (cubic, square, etc.) lattice with on-site Hubbard interaction U. We show that the model becomes exactly solvable for arbitrary U when the BCS pairing amplitude Δ equals the hopping amplitude t. The nature of the solution is described in detail in this Letter. The construction of the exact solution is parallel to the exactly solvable Kitaev honeycomb model for S=1/2 quantum spins and can be viewed as a generalization of Kitaev's construction to S=1/2 interacting lattice fermions. The BCS-Hubbard model discussed in this Letter is just an example of a large class of exactly solvable lattice fermion models that can be constructed similarly.

Exact Volume-Law Entangled Zero-Energy Eigenstates in a Large Class of Spin Models

Sashikanta Mohapatra, Sanjay Moudgalya, Ajit Coimbatore Balram

Exact solutions for excited states in nonintegrable quantum Hamiltonians have revealed novel dynamical phenomena that can occur in quantum many-body systems. This work proposes a method to analytically construct a specific set of volume-law entangled zero-energy exact excited eigenstates in a large class of spin Hamiltonians. In particular, we show that all spin chains that satisfy a simple set of conditions host exact volume law entangled zero-energy eigenstates in the middle of their spectra. Examples of physically relevant spin chains of this type include the transverse-field Ising model, PXP model, spin-S XY model, and spin-S Kitaev chain. Although these eigenstates are highly atypical in their structure, they are thermal with respect to local observables. Our framework also unifies many recent constructions of volume-law entangled eigenstates in the literature. Finally, we show that a similar construction also generalizes to spin models on graphs in arbitrary dimensions.

A Unified Graph-Theoretic Framework for Free-Fermion Solvability

Adrian Chapman, Samuel J. Elman, Ryan L. Mann

We show that a quantum spin system has an exact description by non-interacting fermions if its frustration graph is claw-free and contains a simplicial clique. The frustration graph of a spin model captures the pairwise anticommutation relations between Pauli terms of its Hamiltonian in a given basis. This result captures a vast family of known free-fermion solutions. In previous work, it was shown that a free-fermion solution exists if the frustration graph is either a line graph, or (even-hole, claw)-free. The former case generalizes the celebrated Jordan-Wigner transformation and includes the exact solution to the Kitaev honeycomb model. The latter case generalizes a non-local solution to the four-fermion model given by Fendley. Our characterization unifies these two approaches, extending generalized Jordan-Wigner solutions to the non-local setting and generalizing the four-fermion solution to models of arbitrary spatial dimension. Our key technical insight is the identification of a class of cycle symmetries for all models with claw-free frustration graphs. We prove that these symmetries commute, and this allows us to apply Fendley's solution method to each symmetric subspace independently. Finally, we give a physical description of the fermion modes in terms of operators generated by repeated commutation with the Hamiltonian. This connects our framework to the developing body of work on operator Krylov subspaces. Our results deepen the connection between many-body physics and the mathematical theory of claw-free graphs.
