Abstract

Signaled by nonanalyticities in the time evolution of physical observables, dynamic quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) emerge in quench dynamics of topological systems and possess an interesting geometric origin captured by dynamic topological order parameters (DTOPs). In this Letter, we report the experimental study of DQPTs using discrete-time quantum walks of single photons. We simulate quench dynamics between distinct Floquet topological phases using quantum-walk dynamics and experimentally characterize DQPTs and the underlying DTOPs through interference-based measurements. The versatile photonic quantum-walk platform further allows us to experimentally investigate DQPTs for mixed states and in parity-time-symmetric nonunitary dynamics for the first time. Our experiment directly confirms the relation between DQPTs and DTOPs in quench dynamics of topological systems and opens up the avenue of simulating emergent topological phenomena using discrete-time quantum-walk dynamics.

Floquet dynamical quantum phase transitions in periodically quenched systems

Longwen Zhou, Qianqian Du

Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) are characterized by nonanalytic behaviors of physical observables as functions of time. When a system is subject to time-periodic modulations, the nonanalytic signatures of its observables could recur periodically in time, leading to the phenomena of Floquet DQPTs. In this work, we systematically explore Floquet DQPTs in a class of periodically quenched one-dimensional system with chiral symmetry. By tuning the strength of quench, we find multiple Floquet DQPTs within a single driving period, with more DQPTs being observed when the system is initialized in Floquet states with larger topological invariants. Each Floquet DQPT is further accompanied by the quantized jump of a dynamical topological order parameter, whose values remain quantized in time if the underlying Floquet system is prepared in a gapped topological phase. The theory is demonstrated in a piecewise quenched lattice model, which possesses rich Floquet topological phases and is readily realizable in quantum simulators like the nitrogen-vacancy center in diamonds. Our discoveries thus open a new perspective for the Floquet engineering of DQPTs and the dynamical detection of topological phase transitions in Floquet systems.

Measuring a dynamical topological order parameter in quantum walks

Xiao-Ye Xu, Qin-Qin Wang, Markus Heyl +9 more

Quantum processes of inherent dynamical nature, such as quantum walks, defy a description in terms of an equilibrium statistical physics ensemble. Until now, identifying the general principles behind the underlying unitary quantum dynamics has remained a key challenge. Here, we show and experimentally observe that split-step quantum walks admit a characterization in terms of a dynamical topological order parameter (DTOP). This integer-quantized DTOP measures, at a given time, the winding of the geometric phase accumulated by the wavefunction during a quantum walk. We observe distinct dynamical regimes in our experimentally realized quantum walks, and each regime can be attributed to a qualitatively different temporal behavior of the DTOP. Upon identifying an equivalent many-body problem, we reveal an intriguing connection between the nonanalytic changes of the DTOP in quantum walks and the occurrence of dynamical quantum phase transitions.

Self-normal and biorthogonal dynamical quantum phase transitions in non-Hermitian quantum walks

Haiting Zhang, Kunkun Wang, Lei Xiao +1 more

Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs), characterized by non-analytic behavior in rate function and abrupt changes in dynamic topological order parameters (DTOPs) over time, have garnered enormous attention in recent decades. However, in non-Hermitian systems, the special biorthogonality of the bases makes the definition of DQPTs complex. In this work, we delve into the comprehensive investigation of self-normal DQPTs (originally used in Hermitian systems) to compare them with their biorthogonal counterpart, within the context of non-Hermitian quantum walks (QWs). We present a detailed analysis of the behaviors of Loschmidt rate functions and DTOPs under these two distinct theoretical approaches. While both self-normal and biorthogonal methods can be used to detect DQPTs in quench dynamics between different topological phases, we theoretically present their differences in the definition of critical momenta and critical times by analyzing the Fisher zeros and fixed points. Finally, we present an experiment that observes both types of DQPTs using one-dimensional discrete-time QWs with single photons.

Floquet dynamical quantum phase transitions

Kai Yang, Longwen Zhou, Wenchao Ma +8 more

Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) are manifested by time-domain nonanalytic behaviors of many-body systems. Introducing a quench is so far understood as a typical scenario to induce DQPTs. In this work, we discover a type of DQPTs, termed Floquet DQPTs, as intrinsic features of time-periodic systems. Floquet DQPTs occur within each period of continuous driving, without the need for any quenches. In particular, in a harmonically driven spin chain model, we find analytically the existence of Floquet DQPTs in and only in a parameter regime hosting a certain nontrivial Floquet topological phase. The Floquet DQPTs are further characterized by a dynamical topological invariant defined as the winding number of the Pancharatnam geometric phase versus quasimomentum. These findings are experimentally demonstrated with a single spin in diamond. This work thus opens a door for future studies of DQPTs in connection with topological matter.

Emergent topology and dynamical quantum phase transitions in two-dimensional closed quantum systems

Utso Bhattacharya, Amit Dutta

Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) manifested in the nonanalyticities in the temporal evolution of a closed quantum system generated by the time-independent final Hamiltonian, following a quench (or ramping) of a parameter of the Hamiltonian, is an emerging frontier of nonequilibrium quantum dynamics. We, here, introduce the notion of a dynamical topological order parameter (DTOP) that characterizes these DQPTs occurring in quenched (or ramped) two-dimensional closed quantum systems; this is quite a nontrivial generalization of the notion of DTOP introduced in Budich and Heyl [Phys. Rev. B 93, 085416 (2016)] for one-dimensional situations. This DTOP is obtained from the ``gauge-invariant'' Pancharatnam phase extracted from the Loschmidt overlap, i.e., the modulus of the overlap between the initially prepared state and its time-evolved counterpart reached following a temporal evolution generated by the time-independent final Hamiltonian. This generic proposal is illustrated considering DQPTs occurring in the subsequent temporal evolution following a sudden quench of the staggered mass of the topological Haldane model on a hexagonal lattice where it stays fixed to zero or unity and makes a discontinuous jump between these two values at critical times at which DQPTs occur. What is remarkable is that while the topology of the equilibrium model is characterized by the Chern number, the emergent topology associated with the DQPTs is characterized by a generalized winding number.

Geometry effect of dynamical quantum phase transitions at finite temperatures

Jia-Chen Tang, Xu-Yang Hou, Hao Guo

Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) probe the nonequilibrium evolution of quantum systems, unveiling their geometric and topological characteristics. In this study, we introduce the concepts of parallel quench and dynamic geometrical order parameter (DGOP) for nonband models without momentum-space structure, where these quantities capture the geometric shifts associated with DQPTs. At zero temperature, the DGOP corresponds to the Pancharatnam geometric phase, while at finite temperatures, it extends to the interferometric geometric phase. We further generalize the dynamic topological order parameter (DTOP) to finite-temperature band models, examining its behavior in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. Our analysis shows that thermal fluctuations and boundary effects at finite temperatures disrupt the quantization of the DTOP, yet it retains signatures of topological transitions. These findings deepen the understanding of geometric and topological properties in quantum dynamics, illuminating DQPTs across both nonband and band frameworks.
