Abstract

We propose a robust scheme for generating macroscopic superposition states of spin or motion with the aid of a single photon. Shaping the wave packet of the photon enables high-fidelity preparation of nonclassical states of matter even in the presence of photon loss. Success is heralded by photodetection, enabling the scheme to be implemented with a weak coherent field. We analyze applications to preparing Schrödinger cat states of a collective atomic spin or of a mechanical oscillator coupled to an optical resonator. The method generalizes to preparing arbitrary superpositions of coherent states, enabling full quantum control. We illustrate this versatility by showing how to prepare Dicke or Fock states, as well as superpositions in the Dicke or Fock basis.

Generating entangled spin states for quantum metrology by single-photon detection

Robert McConnell, Hao Zhang, Senka Ćuk +3 more

We propose and analyze a probabilistic but heralded scheme to generate pure, entangled, non-Gaussian states of collective spin in large atomic ensembles by means of single-photon detection. One photon announces the preparation of a Dicke state, while two or more photons announce Schr\"odinger cat states. The method produces pure states even for finite photon detection efficiency and weak atom-photon coupling. The entanglement generation can be made quasideterministic by means of repeated trial and feedback, enabling metrology beyond the standard quantum limit.

Macroscopic nonclassical-state preparation via postselection

Víctor Montenegro, Raúl Coto, Vitalie Eremeev +1 more

Macroscopic quantum superposition states are fundamental to test the classical-quantum boundary and present suitable candidates for quantum technologies. Although the preparation of such states has already been realized, the existing setups commonly consider external driving and resonant interactions, predominantly by considering Jaynes-Cummings-like and beam-splitter-like interactions, as well as the nonlinear radiation pressure interaction in cavity optomechanics. In contrast to previous works on the matter, we propose a feasible probabilistic scheme to generate a macroscopic mechanical qubit, as well as phononic Schr\"odinger's cat states with no need of any energy exchange with the macroscopic mechanical oscillator. Essentially, we investigate an open dispersive spin-mechanical system in the absence of any external driving under nonideal conditions, such as the detrimental effects due to the oscillator and spin energy losses in a thermal bath at nonzero temperature. In our work, we show that the procedure to generate the mechanical qubit state is solely based on spin postselection in the weak to moderate coupling regime. Finally, we demonstrate that the mechanical superposition is related to the amplification of the mean values of the mechanical quadratures as they maximize the quantum coherence.

Conditional preparation of arbitrary superpositions of atomic Dicke states

Karel Lemr, Jaromı́r Fiurášek

We propose an experimentally accessible procedure for conditional preparation of highly nonclassical states of collective spin of an atomic ensemble. The quantum state engineering is based on a combination of quantum nondemolition interaction between atoms and light previously prepared in a non-Gaussian state using photon subtraction from squeezed vacuum beam, homodyne detection on the output light beam, and a coherent displacement of atomic state. The procedure is capable of nondeterministic preparation of a wide class of superpositions of atomic Dicke states. We present several techniques to optimize the performance of the protocol and maximize the trade off between fidelity of prepared state and success probability of the scheme.

Measurement-based generation of shaped single photons and coherent state superpositions in optical cavities

Ruvindha Lakshan Lecamwasam, Michael Hush, M. R. James +1 more

We propose related schemes to generate arbitrarily shaped single photons, i.e., photons with an arbitrary temporal profile, and coherent state superpositions using simple optical elements. The first system consists of two coupled cavities, a memory cavity and a shutter cavity, containing a second-order optical nonlinearity and electro-optic modulator (EOM), respectively. Photodetection events of the shutter cavity output herald preparation of a single photon in the memory cavity, which may be stored by immediately changing the optical length of the shutter cavity with the EOM after detection. On-demand readout of the photon, with arbitrary shaping, can be achieved through modulation of the EOM. The second scheme consists of a memory cavity with two outputs, which are interfered, phase shifted, and measured. States that closely approximate a coherent state superposition can be produced through postselection for sequences of detection events, with more photon detection events leading to a larger superposition. We furthermore demonstrate that no-knowledge feedback can be easily implemented in this system and used to preserve the superposition state, as well as provide an extra control mechanism for state generation.

Shaping of Coherent State Superpositions Via Deterministically Created SchröDinger-Cat States

Severin Daiss, Bastian Hacker, Stephan Welte +4 more

In 1935, Erwin Schrödinger put forward his famous gedanken experiment in which a microscopic degree of freedom - the emission state of a radioactive atom - and a macroscopic, classical state - the life or death of a cat - are entangled [1]. The resulting state is dubbed a Schrodinger-cat state. According to quantum theory, a measurement of the atom in a superposition basis projects the cat into a macroscopic superposition of being alive and dead. Here, we use coherent laser fields with different optical phases as a macroscopic model system and generate entangled Schrodinger-cat states in a deterministic way [3]. We reflect the coherent pulses from an optical cavity that contains a single strongly-coupled atom. This entangles the spin of the atom with the optical phase of the light field [2]. By manipulating and detecting the atomic state, we create a plethora of flying optical coherent-state superpositions. We reconstruct the corresponding Wigner functions (see Fig. 1) to demonstrate the tunability and non-classicality of the produced light state.

Generating a Schrödinger-cat-like state via a coherent superposition of photonic operations

Chang-Woo Lee, Jinhyoung Lee, Hyunchul Nha +1 more

We propose an optical scheme to generate a superposition of coherent states with enhanced size adopting an interferometric setting at the single-photon level currently available in the laboratory. Our scheme employs a nondegenerate optical parametric amplifier together with two beam splitters so that the detection of single photons at the output conditionally implements the desired superposition of second-order photonic operations. We analyze our proposed scheme by considering realistic on-off photodetectors with nonideal efficiency in heralding the success of conditional events. A high-quality performance of our scheme is demonstrated in view of various criteria such as quantum fidelity, mean output energy, and measure of quantum interference.
