Abstract

Kitaev's honeycomb-lattice spin-$1/2$ model has become a paradigmatic example for ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ quantum spin liquids, both gapped and gapless. Here we study the fate of these spin-liquid phases in differently stacked bilayer versions of the Kitaev model. Increasing the ratio between the interlayer Heisenberg coupling ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ and the intralayer Kitaev couplings ${K}^{x,y,z}$ destroys the topological spin liquid in favor of a paramagnetic dimer phase. We study phase diagrams as a function of ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}/K$ and Kitaev coupling anisotropies using Majorana-fermion mean-field theory, and we employ different expansion techniques in the limits of small and large ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}/K$. For strongly anisotropic Kitaev couplings, we derive effective models for the different layer stackings that we use to discuss the quantum phase transition out of the Kitaev phase. We find that the phase diagrams depend sensitively on the nature of the stacking and anisotropy strength. While in some stackings and at strong anisotropies we find a single transition between the Kitaev and dimer phases, other stackings are more involved. Most importantly, we prove the existence of two novel macrospin phases, which can be understood in terms of Ising chains that can be either coupled ferromagnetically or remain degenerate, thus realizing a classical spin liquid. In addition, our results suggest the existence of a flux phase with spontaneous interlayer coherence. We discuss prospects for experimental realizations.

Topological and magnetic phase transitions in the bilayer Kitaev-Ising model

Aayush Vijayvargia, Urban F. P. Seifert, Onur Erten

We investigate the phase diagram of a bilayer Kitaev honeycomb model with Ising interlayer interactions, deriving effective models via perturbation theory and performing Majorana mean-field theory calculations. We show that a diverse array of magnetic and topological phase transitions occur, depending on the direction of the interlayer Ising interaction and the relative sign of Kitaev interactions. When two layers have the same sign of the Kitaev interaction, a first-order transition from a Kitaev spin liquid to a magnetically ordered state takes place. The magnetic order points along the Ising axis and it is (anti)ferromagnetic for (anti)ferromagnetic Kitaev interactions. However, when two layers have opposite signs of the Kitaev interaction, we observe a notable weakening of magnetic ordering tendencies and the Kitaev spin liquid survives up to a remarkably larger interlayer exchange. Our mean-field analysis suggests the emergence of an intermediate gapped ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ spin-liquid state, which eventually becomes unstable upon vison condensation. The confined phase is described by a highly frustrated ${120}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ compass model. We furthermore use perturbation theory to study the model with the Ising axis pointing along the $\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{z}$ axis or lying in the $xy$ plane. In both cases, our analysis reveals the formation of one-dimensional Ising chains, which remain decoupled in perturbation theory, resulting in a subextensive ground-state degeneracy. Our results highlight the interplay between topological order and magnetic ordering tendencies in bilayer quantum spin liquids.

Majorana-fermion mean field theories of Kitaev quantum spin liquids

Shahnam Ghanbari Saheli, Jennifer Shu-Jen Lin, Huanzhi Hu +1 more

We determine the phase diagrams of anisotropic Kitaev-Heisenberg models on the honeycomb lattice using parton mean-field theories based on different Majorana fermion representations of the S=1/2 spin operators. First, we use a two-dimensional Jordan-Wigner transformation (JWT) involving a semi-infinite snake string operator. To ensure that the fermionized Hamiltonian remains local, we consider the limit of extreme Ising exchange anisotropy in the Heisenberg sector. Second, we use the conventional Kitaev representation in terms of four Majorana fermions subject to local constraints, which we enforce through Lagrange multipliers. For both representations, we self-consistently decouple the interaction terms in the bond and magnetization channels and determine the phase diagrams as a function of the anisotropy of the Kitaev couplings and the relative strength of the Ising exchange. While both mean-field theories produce identical phase boundaries for the topological phase transition between the gapless and gapped Kitaev quantum spin liquids, the JWT fails to correctly describe the magnetic instability and finite-temperature behavior. Our results show that the magnetic phase transition is first order at low temperatures but becomes continuous above a certain temperature. At this energy scale, we also observe a finite-temperature crossover on the quantum-spin-liquid side, from a fractionalized paramagnet at low temperatures, in which gapped flux excitations are frozen out, to a conventional paramagnet at high temperatures. Phases and quantum phase transitions in the anisotropic antiferromagnetic Kitaev-Heisenberg- Γ magnet

Animesh Nanda, Adhip Agarwala, Subhro Bhattacharjee

We study the Kitaev-Heisenberg-$\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$ model with antiferromagnetic Kitaev exchanges in the strong anisotropic (toric code) limit to understand the phases and the intervening phase transitions between the gapped ${Z}_{2}$ quantum spin liquid and the spin-ordered (in the Heisenberg limit) as well as paramagnetic phases (in the pseudodipolar, $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$, limit). We find that the paramagnetic phase obtained in the large $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$ limit has no topological entanglement entropy and is proximate to a gapless critical point of a system described by equal superposition of differently oriented stacked one-dimensional ${Z}_{2}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{Z}_{2}$ symmetry protected topological phases. Using a combination of exact diagonalization calculations and field theoretic analysis we map out the phases and phase transitions to reveal the complete phase diagram as a function of the Heisenberg, the Kitaev, and the pseudodipolar interactions. Our work shows a rich plethora of unconventional phases and phase transitions and provides a comprehensive understanding of the physics of anisotropic Kitaev-Heisenberg-$\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$ systems along with our recent paper [Phys. Rev. B 102, 235124 (2020)] where the ferromagnetic Kitaev exchange was studied.

Interlayer coupling effect on a bilayer Kitaev model

Hiroyuki Tomishige, Joji Nasu, Akihisa Koga

We investigate a bilayer Kitaev model in which two honeycomb layers are coupled by the Heisenberg interactions to discuss the effects of interlayer coupling on Kitaev quantum spin liquids (QSLs). In this model, there exists a local conserved quantity which results in no long-range spin correlations in the system. Using the exact diagonalization, bond-operator mean-field theory, and cluster expansion techniques, we study ground-state properties in the system. The obtained results suggest the existence of a first-order quantum phase transition between the Kitaev QSL and dimer-singlet states. We find that a one-triplet excitation from the dimer-singlet ground state is localized owing to the existence of the local conserved quantity. To examine finite-temperature properties, we make use of the thermal pure quantum state approach. We clarify that the double-peak structure in the specific heat inherent in the Kitaev QSL is maintained even above the quantum phase transition. The present results suggest that the Kitaev QSL is stable against the interlayer interference. Magnetic properties of multilayer Kitaev models are also addressed.

Gauge field dynamics in multilayer Kitaev spin liquids

Aprem P. Joy, Achim Rosch

Abstract The Kitaev spin liquid realizes an emergent static $${{\mathbb{Z}}}_{2}$$ Z 2 gauge field with vison excitations coupled to Majorana fermions. We consider Kitaev models stacked on top of each other, weakly coupled by Heisenberg interaction ∝ J⊥. This inter-layer coupling breaks the integrability of the model and makes the gauge fields dynamic. Conservation laws and topology keep single visons immobile. However, an inter-layer vison pairs can hop with a hopping amplitude linear in J⊥ confined to the layer, but their motion is strongly influenced by the type of stacking. For AA stacking, an interlayer pair has a two-dimensional motion but for AB or ABC stacking, sheet conservation laws restrict its motion to a one-dimensional channel within the plane. For all stacking types, an intra-layer vison-pair is constrained to move out-of-plane only. Depending on the anisotropy of the Kitaev couplings Kx, Ky, Kz, the intra-layer vison pairs can display either coherent tunnelling or purely incoherent hopping. When a magnetic field opens a gap for Majorana fermions, there exist two types of intra-layer vison pairs - a bosonic and a fermionic one. Only the bosonic pair obtains a hopping rate linear in J⊥. We use our results to identify the leading instabilities of the spin liquid phase induced by the inter-layer coupling.

Quantum phase diagram of the bilayer Kitaev-Heisenberg model

Elahe Samimi, Antonia Duft, Patrick Adelhardt +2 more

We study the ground-state phase diagram of the spin-$1/2$ Kitaev-Heisenberg model on the bilayer honeycomb lattice with large-scale tensor network calculations based on the infinite projected entangled pair state technique as well as high-order series expansions. We find that beyond various magnetically ordered phases, including ferromagnetic, zigzag, antiferromagnetic (AFM) and stripy states, two extended quantum spin liquid phases arise in the proximity of the Kitaev limit. While these ordered phases also appear in the monolayer Kitaev-Heisenberg model, our results further show that a valence bond solid state emerges in a relatively narrow range of parameter space between the AFM and stripy phases, which can be adiabatically connected to isolated Heisenberg dimers. Our results highlight the importance of considering interlayer interactions on the emergence of novel quantum phases in the bilayer Kitaev materials.
