Abstract

We investigate the low-energy excitations of a dilute atomic Bose gas confined in a anharmonic trap interacting with repulsive forces. The dispersion law of both surface and compression modes is derived and analyzed for large numbers of atoms in the trap, which show two branches of excitation and appear two critical values, where one of them indicates collective excitation which would be unstable dynamically, and the other one indicates the existing collective mode with lower frequency under anharmonic influence than that in harmonic trapping case. Our work reveals the key role played by the anharmonicity and interatomic forces which introduce a rich structure in the dynamic behavior of these new many-body systems.

Collective Excitations of a Trapped Bose-Condensed Gas

We investigate the low energy excitations of a dilute atomic Bose gas confined in a harmonic trap of frequency ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}$ and interacting with repulsive forces. The dispersion law $\ensuremath{\omega}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}({2n}^{2}+2n\ensuremath{\ell}+3n+\ensuremath{\ell}{)}^{1/2}$ for the elementary excitations is obtained for large numbers of atoms in the trap, to be compared with the prediction $\ensuremath{\omega}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}(2n+\ensuremath{\ell})$ of the noninteracting harmonic oscillator model. Here $n$ is the number of radial nodes and $\ensuremath{\ell}$ is the orbital angular momentum. The effects of the kinetic energy pressure are estimated using a sum rule approach. Results are also presented for deformed traps and attractive forces.

Instability of collective excitations and power laws of an attractive Bose-Einstein condensate in an anharmonic trap

Pankaj Kumar Debnath, Barnali Chakrabarti

We study the instability of collective excitations of a three-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate with repulsive and attractive interactions in a shallow trap designed as a quadratic plus a quartic potential. By using a correlated many-body theory, we determine the excitation modes and probe the critical behavior of collective modes, having a crucial dependence on the anharmonic parameter. We examine the power-law behavior of monopole frequency near criticality. In Gross-Pitaevskii variational treatment [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 1576 (1998)] the power-law exponent is determined as one-fourth power of $(1\ensuremath{-}\frac{A}{{A}_{\mathit{cr}}})$, $A$ is the number of condensate atoms and ${A}_{\mathit{cr}}$ is the critical number near collapse. We observe that the power-law exponent becomes $\frac{1}{6}$ in our calculation for the pure harmonic trap and it becomes $\frac{1}{7}$, for traps with a small anharmonic distortion. However for large anharmonicity the power law breaks down.

Collective excitations of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an anharmonic trap

We investigate the collective excitations of a one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate with repulsive interaction between atoms in a quadratic plus quartic trap. Using variational approaches, the coupled equations of motions for the center-of-mass coordinate of the condensate and its width are derived. Then, two low-energy excitation modes are obtained analytically. The frequency shift induced by the anharmonic distortion, and the collapse and revival of the collective excitations originating from the nonlinear coupling between the two modes, are discussed.

Effect of the anharmonicity of the trap on the collective excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates

Xue Ju-Kui

It is investigated that the collective excitations of a one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate(BEC) with repulsive interaction between atoms in a quadratic plus quartic trap V(x)=12(x~2+λx~4).By using the variational approach, the analytical expressions are derived for two low-energy collective modes, and the effect of the anharmonicity of the potential trap on BEC collective excitations is studied.When(λ0) the frequencies will be blue shifted and when λ0 the frequencies will be red shifted.Meanwhile, the variations of the center-of-mass of the condensate and its width under different values of the driving amplitude are discussed. It is found that the two modes couple each other due to the anharmonicity, and the beating structure for the variation of the width occur. Finally, the response result corresponding to the frequency driving is given.

Collective Excitations and Nonlinear Dynamics of 1D BEC with Two- and Three-body Interactions in Anharmonic Traps

Guan-Qiang Li, Peng Ping, Liu Jian-Ke +1 more

The collective excitations of low-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensates with two- and three-body interactions in anharmonic potentials are investigated. Using the standard variational approach, the governing equations of motions for the low-energy excitations are obtained by solving time-dependent Gross–Pitaevskii–Ginzburg equation, and the excitation spectrums are calculated in small amplitude limit. The frequency shift and nonlinear mode coupling induced by the anharmonic distortion (adding cubic, quartic, or quintic term to a harmonic trap) are studied.

Critical rotation of an anharmonically trapped Bose–Einstein condensate

Juan Ma, Zhi Li, Xue Ju-Kui

We consider rotational motion of an interacting atomic Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) with both two- and three-body interactions in a quadratic-plus-quartic and harmonic-plus-Gaussian trap. By using the variational method, the influence of the three-body interaction and the anharmonicity of the trap on the lowest energy surface mode excitation and the spontaneous shape deformation (responsible for the vortex formation) in a rotating BEC is discussed in detail. It is found that the repulsive three-body interaction helps the formation of the vortex and reduces the lowest energy surface mode frequency and the critical rotational frequency of the system. Moreover, the critical rotational frequency for the vortex formation in the harmonic-plus-Gaussian potential is lower than that in the quadratic-plus-quartic potential.
