Coherent fluctuation relations: from the abstract to the concrete

Zoë Holmes, Sebastian Weidt, David Jennings +2 more

Recent studies using the quantum information theoretic approach to thermodynamics show that the presence of coherence in quantum systems generates corrections to classical fluctuation theorems. To explicate the physical origins and implications of such corrections, we here convert an abstract framework of an autonomous quantum Crooks relation into quantum Crooks equalities for well-known coherent, squeezed and cat states. We further provide a proposal for a concrete experimental scenario to test these equalities. Our scheme consists of the autonomous evolution of a trapped ion and uses a position dependent AC Stark shift.

Frequency-encoded linear cluster states with coherent Raman photons

Dale Scerri, Ralph N. E. Malein, Brian D. Gerardot +1 more

Entangled multiqubit states are an essential resource for quantum information and computation. Solid-state emitters can mediate interactions between subsequently emitted photons via their spin, thus offering a route towards generating entangled multiphoton states. However, existing schemes typically rely on the excitation-relaxation of the emitter, resulting in single photons limited by the emitter's radiative lifetime, suffering from considerable practical limitations, for self-assembled quantum dots most notably the limited spin coherence time due to Overhauser magnetic field fluctuations. We here propose an alternative approach based on a spin-$\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ system that overcomes the limitations of previous proposals. Studying the example of spin-flip Raman scattering of self-assembled quantum dots in Voigt geometry, we argue that weakly driven hole spins constitute a promising platform for the practical generation of frequency-entangled photonic cluster states.

Proposal to test quantum wave-particle superposition on massive mechanical resonators

Wei Qin, Adam Miranowicz, Guilu Long +2 more

Abstract We present and analyze a proposal for a macroscopic quantum delayed-choice experiment with massive mechanical resonators. In our approach, the electronic spin of a single nitrogen-vacancy impurity is employed to control the coherent coupling between the mechanical modes of two carbon nanotubes. We demonstrate that a mechanical phonon can be in a coherent superposition of wave and particle, thus exhibiting both behaviors at the same time. We also discuss the mechanical noise tolerable in our proposal and predict a critical temperature below which the morphing between wave and particle states can be effectively observed in the presence of environment-induced fluctuations. Furthermore, we describe how to amplify single-phonon excitations of the mechanical-resonator superposition states to a macroscopic level, via squeezing the mechanical modes. This approach corresponds to the phase-covariant cloning. Therefore, our proposal can serve as a test of macroscopic quantum superpositions of massive objects even with large excitations. This work, which describes a fundamental test of the limits of quantum mechanics at the macroscopic scale, would have implications for quantum metrology and quantum information processing.
