Abstract

We experimentally observe Floquet Raman transitions in the weakly driven solid-state spin system of a nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. The periodically driven spin system simulates a two-band Wannier-Stark ladder model and allows us to observe coherent spin state transfer arising from a Raman transition mediated by Floquet synthetic levels. It also leads to the prediction of an analog photon-assisted Floquet Raman transition and dynamical localization in a driven two-level quantum system. The demonstrated rich Floquet dynamics offers new capabilities to achieve effective Floquet coherent control of a quantum system with potential applications in various types of quantum technologies based on driven quantum dynamics. In particular, the Floquet Raman system may be used as a quantum simulator for the physics of periodically driven systems.

Synthetic topology and Floquet dynamic quantum phase transition in a periodically driven Raman lattice

De-Huan Cai, Wei Yi

Stimulated by the recent progress in engineering topological band structures in cold atomic gases, we study the dynamic topological phenomena for atoms loaded in a periodically driven optical lattice. When the frequency of the periodic modulation is low, the time-dependent Hamiltonian can be mapped to a two-dimensional topological insulator, with the discretized frequency components playing the role of an additional, synthetic dimension. In the high-frequency limit, we derive the effective Floquet Hamiltonian of the system, and reveal the occurrence of Floquet dynamic quantum phase transitions---an emergent topological phenomenon in the micromotion of the Floquet dynamics. Addressing the relation between the topology of the effective Floquet Hamiltonian and the presence of dynamic topological phenomena, we demonstrate that the topologically nontrivial nature of the Floquet Hamiltonian is a sufficient but not necessary condition for the onset of the Floquet dynamic quantum phase transition. We further discuss the relation of the topology of the Floquet Hamiltonian with the existence of dynamic skyrmion structures in the emergent momentum-time manifold of the micromotion, as well as the fate of these dynamic topological phenomena when the modulation frequency decreases away from the high-frequency limit. Finally, making use of the rich level structures of $^{171}\mathrm{Yb}$ atoms, we show that the system under study can be implemented in a one-dimensional Raman lattice where states in the ${}^{1}{S}_{0}$ ground-state manifold are coupled by Raman beams with periodically modulated amplitudes.

Multiphoton Raman transitions and Rabi oscillations in driven spin systems

A. P. Saǐko, Siarhei A. Markevich, Ryhor Fedaruk

In the framework of the nonsecular perturbation theory based on the Bogoliubov averaging method, the coherent dynamics of multiphoton Raman transitions in a two-level spin system driven by an amplitude-modulated microwave field is studied. Closed-form expressions for the Rabi frequencies of these transitions are obtained beyond the rotating-wave approximation for the low-frequency driving component. It is shown that spin states dressed by the high-frequency component of the driving field are shifted due to the Bloch-Siegert-like effect caused by antiresonant interactions with the strong low-frequency driving. We predict that with increasing the order of the Raman transition, the Rabi frequency decreases and the contribution of the Bloch-Siegert shift to this frequency becomes dominant. It is found that the amplitude and phase of the Rabi oscillations strongly depend on the initial phase of the low-frequency field as well as on detuning from multiphoton resonance. The recent experimental data for the second- and third-order Raman transitions observed for the nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond (Z. Shu et al., arXiv:1804.10492) are well described in the frame of our approach. Our results may provide new possibilities for coherent control of quantum systems.

Floquet dynamical quantum phase transitions in periodically quenched systems

Longwen Zhou, Qianqian Du

Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) are characterized by nonanalytic behaviors of physical observables as functions of time. When a system is subject to time-periodic modulations, the nonanalytic signatures of its observables could recur periodically in time, leading to the phenomena of Floquet DQPTs. In this work, we systematically explore Floquet DQPTs in a class of periodically quenched one-dimensional system with chiral symmetry. By tuning the strength of quench, we find multiple Floquet DQPTs within a single driving period, with more DQPTs being observed when the system is initialized in Floquet states with larger topological invariants. Each Floquet DQPT is further accompanied by the quantized jump of a dynamical topological order parameter, whose values remain quantized in time if the underlying Floquet system is prepared in a gapped topological phase. The theory is demonstrated in a piecewise quenched lattice model, which possesses rich Floquet topological phases and is readily realizable in quantum simulators like the nitrogen-vacancy center in diamonds. Our discoveries thus open a new perspective for the Floquet engineering of DQPTs and the dynamical detection of topological phase transitions in Floquet systems.

Counterdiabatic Driving for Periodically Driven Systems

Paul M. Schindler, Marin Bukov

Periodically driven systems have emerged as a useful technique to engineer the properties of quantum systems, and are in the process of being developed into a standard toolbox for quantum simulation. An outstanding challenge that leaves this toolbox incomplete is the manipulation of the states dressed by strong periodic drives. The state-of-the-art in Floquet control is the adiabatic change of parameters. Yet, this requires long protocols conflicting with the limited coherence times in experiments. To achieve fast control of nonequilibrium quantum matter, we generalize the notion of variational counterdiabatic driving away from equilibrium focusing on Floquet systems. We derive a nonperturbative variational principle to find local approximations to the adiabatic gauge potential for the effective Floquet Hamiltonian. It enables transitionless driving of Floquet eigenstates far away from the adiabatic regime. We discuss applications to two-level, Floquet band, and interacting periodically driven models. The developed technique allows us to capture nonperturbative photon resonances and obtain high-fidelity protocols that respect experimental limitations like the locality of the accessible control terms.

Observation of Floquet bands in driven spin-orbit-coupled Fermi gases

Lianghui Huang, Peng Peng, Donghao Li +6 more

Periodic driving of a quantum system can significantly alter its energy bands and even change the band topology, opening a completely new avenue for engineering novel quantum matter. Although important progress has been made recently in measuring topological properties of Floquet bands in different systems, direct experimental measurement of full Floquet band dispersions and their topology change is still demanding. Here we directly measure Floquet band dispersions in a periodically driven spin-orbit-coupled ultracold Fermi gas using spin-injection radio-frequency spectroscopy. We observe that the Dirac point originating from two-dimensional spin-orbit coupling can be manipulated to emerge at the lowest or highest two dressed bands by fast modulating Raman laser frequencies, demonstrating topological change of Floquet bands. Our work will provide a powerful tool for understanding fundamental Floquet physics as well as engineering exotic topological quantum matter.

Floquet Spin Amplification

Min Jiang, Yushu Qin, Xin Wang +4 more

Detection of weak electromagnetic waves and hypothetical particles aided by quantum amplification is important for fundamental physics and applications. However, demonstrations of quantum amplification are still limited; in particular, the physics of quantum amplification is not fully explored in periodically driven (Floquet) systems, which are generally defined by time-periodic Hamiltonians and enable observation of many exotic quantum phenomena such as time crystals. Here we investigate the magnetic-field signal amplification by periodically driven ^{129}Xe spins and observe signal amplification at frequencies of transitions between Floquet spin states. This "Floquet amplification" allows us to simultaneously enhance and measure multiple magnetic fields with at least one order of magnitude improvement, offering the capability of femtotesla-level measurements. Our findings extend the physics of quantum amplification to Floquet spin systems and can be generalized to a wide variety of existing amplifiers, enabling a previously unexplored class of "Floquet spin amplifiers".
